Snowmelt floods hit Camp Comfort after March thaw wave

March 5 snow five to four inches melted over two days of rain lifting creeks to flood stage. Camp Comfort dam and camping areas were submerged. The past week’s temperatures show a thaw with highs around the 40s and lows in the 20s.

All County Chorus rehearsal set for March 29 at St James

Mrs. Glenda Timmer music director of the Butler County Production Bicentennial Committee plans an all county mass chorus rehearsal on Monday March 29 at St James Lutheran Church Allison. Grade School Basketball Night Arrives March 23

Grade school basketball night is set for Tuesday March 23 at 6 30 p m in the high school gym. Both boys and girls teams will play with all proceeds going to the summer recreation program. Boys schedule features Spurs versus Nets Colonels versus Pacers Nuggets versus Squires Celtics versus Bulls Bucks versus Knicks Lakers versus Hawks.

Commercial Club Sets Pancake Day for April 1

The Commercial Club met with 9 members and planned Pancake Day for April 1 to serve 500 people starting at 11:00 a.m. Five ten dollar Greene Bucks will be handed out during serving hours to be used by April 30.

Butler County Budget Hearing Set for March 22

Butler County Board of Supervisors schedules a public hearing on the fiscal 1976 77 budget for March 22 at 10 a m. Expenditures are esti mated at 2 919 131 with 90 064 cash reserve and 1 874 088 balance leaving 1 135 107 to be raised by taxation. A budget summary is on file at the county auditor for public examination. Tim Feldman won a bronze medal at the Grundy Center Jr Spartan wrestling invitational on March 13 in the 75 lb class.

Majewski Rites Held for Greene Resident at St Marys

Funeral services for John L. Majewski age 90 of Greene were held Tuesday at St. Marys Catholic Church with burial in St. Marys Cemetery. Born near Charles City April 17 1885 to Joseph and Augusta Majewski he died March 14 in Floyd County Hospital. Survived by wife Grace four sons Lewis Melvin Melve and Lloyd all of Greene ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Sewing Slacks Course Offered by Greene Community School

The Greene Community School with MACC offers a Sewing Slacks course taught by Shirley Van Eschen. It runs 15 hours over 5 to 6 weeks starting March 31 with a $7.50 fee. Ten participants needed. register at 823-5631 in the high school principal's office.

Greene VFD Responds To Morning House Fire

The Greene Volunteer Fire Department answered a fire call at about 9 30 a m Sunday at the Dave Brinkman home. Cardboard boxes were set ablaze by a short in a battery charger while charging a battery in the basement. There was considerable smoke damage.

92 Year Old Greene Native Remembers River Town Boyhood

Charlie Hurd, born July 22, 1883 in Greene, recalls a river town with dirt streets and wooden sidewalks. He recounts helping in his father’s meat market, daily train arrivals, and a close family life with eight siblings, detailing life from stores to hotels, a tornado, a 12 foot family table, and the evolving town landscape. He shares family milestones, including 57 years of marriage to Barbara Kirsch and a large clan of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Posthumous Promotion for Lt Timothy Kline in Air Force

Announcement of First Lieutenant Timothy M. Kline’s posthumous promotion to captain follows a mission from Mildenhall England to Torrejon Spain where the aircraft crashed 10 miles from its destination. Seven crew members died, including Kline, navigator on a tanker for Strategic Air Command. His body returned to the U.S. February 14, services held February 17 in Wyoming Michigan. Lt Stephen Sterling another crew member, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, also buried with full military honors. Families of both officers attended.
