The Town Council suggested experts enter space for Crazy Day with the editor in the hot seat but the plan is declined. Gals plan Gay 90s costumes while Bermuda shorts and short billed caps dominate current fashion. Greene invites visitors with promises of fun bargains and crowds lining the streets Friday for a memorable day.
The City Golf Tournament quarterfinals at Round Grove and Country Club concluded with Clyde Stuntz defeating Vern Rattler Bob Curtis beating Paul Hamilton Charles Teeple defeating Keith Drake and Martin Senne overcoming Sam Sneed. The consolation round saw Larry Finnell over Francis Knapp Herman Stubbe over Jim Knapp Jim Graven over Dean Ott and Gerald Stephenson over Dale Willey.
The Veterans Club donated a watch tower built years ago on club grounds. It was used to spot planes in emergencies and will be dismantled and moved to the athletic field to serve as an observation stand for officials at games. The tower has glass walls and steps to access the enclosed viewing area.
Butler County items detail four arrests and court actions. Russell W. Wolf, 57, Hamp ton, jailed for OMV alcohol charge on Highway 14, arraigned in Allison JP Court. bond set at 500 dollars then posted. Joseph Orebaugh, 35, Wheaton Illinois, OMVTI charge after crash on Highway 3 east of Allison. treated with 30 stitches. arraigned in Allison JP Court. 500 dollar bond not furnished. Clarence Hovenga, 21, pleaded guilty in District Court to driving while license suspended. Judge Beardmore fines 200 dollars plus 25.60 costs. Gary Southard, 18, Cedar Falls, pleaded guilty to nighttime larceny. judge sentences 10 years in Anamosa Reformatory, but suspends and paroles to State Board of Parole until age 21. Southard was arrested April 19 near New Hartford for theft of gas oil and tools from a farm. Sheriff’s office handled summons.
The Invitational Golf Tournament will be held at the local Country Club Sunday July 30. A prize will be given to one out of every four entrants.
Greene merchants announce Ridiculous Day on Friday July 28 with three parades a square dance rides and prizes for costumes. First parade 8 30 a m children parade 2 00 p m final parade 7 30 p m stores open 9 00 a m close 9 00 p m square dance 9 00 p m to midnight on main street rides ferris wheel train cars merry go round octopus and chair plane offered for Friday and Saturday.
SSA representative from Waterloo district will visit Allison Court House on August 4 and 18 from 10:00 a.m. to noon to assist filing for federal old age, survivors and disability benefits, original and duplicate social security cards, and employer identification numbers. Call Waterloo office in Black Hawk Building room 702 at 4-1554 for details.
The Waterloo Hawks host a baseball clinic for summer teams on Saturday August 5th. Participants include Greene's program players and their fathers may attend as chaperones to watch Waterloo Hawks versus Decatur. Buses will transport attendees.
Lawrence Rosel of Nora Springs was fined 25 dollars plus 4 dollars costs for improper passing on a yellow line. Glen Hauskins of Charles City faced a speeding charge and paid 10 dollars in fines with 4 dollars costs.
The State Conservation Commission reports that Coast Guard approved preservers are acceptable under Iowa boating rules for all boats including boats for hire. Dealers must have a different number on each water boat, so five demonstrators require five number sets. Apply for boat numbers using exterior measurements to avoid miscounting capacity.
Merchants fear up river towns plan lawsuits to recoup salvage from the spring flood. A Rockford shopper claims pants washed from his bedpost were found with a fish in a pocket, blamed on the Shell Rock flood. Merchants plan a Ridiculous Day Sale to dump merchandise amid possible suits.
Dr and Mrs R F Ladwig with Mr and Mrs W R Bierbaum arrived home from San Francisco California last Wednesday They were called West by the illness of their aunt Mrs Mildred Duncan who recovered enough to return with them to the Chautauqua Guest Home at Charles City
A stag supper is scheduled at the Country Club next Tuesday evening, August 1. The Alli Lees group leads the event with arrangements and host duties.
The final week of the Summer Park Program began with the Summer Fun theme. Children craft figurines, metal work, baskets, potholders weaving, and shell jewelry while felt purses and pincushions take shape. Pet day with ribbons for Ann Curtis, Dick Larson, Jim Truitt, Randy Knight, and Rodney Truitt’s garter snake. Hobo Day planned for Thursday with a tramp dress, average attendance 32.
A review roundup introduces Mountains Ahead by Martha McKewen about an 1847 Oregon trail trek. Russia and the West by George Kennam analyzes Soviet Western relations 1917 to 1945. Citizen of New Salem by Paul Horgan offers a warm Lincoln life sketch. The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford recounts a 250 mile trek of a Lab retriever, bull terrier, and cat appealing to animal lovers.
Two major additions to Winnebago Boy Scout Camp at Marble Rock were dedicated last Wednesday night. A large headquarters building donated by Mr and Mrs Tom Albrecht of Greene and a Trading Post donated by the Kinney Lindstrom Foundation were unveiled.
The Recorder staff plans its annual vacation the week of August 7. Two papers will print that week with a regular issue on August 2 and a second issue on August 4. The issue mailed on August 9 will proceed as scheduled. All copy must be in by Friday noon August 4.
Frank Wiegmann 61 of Greene sustained minor injuries when Oscar Crandall 22 of Chapin rear ended his westbound car about 10:30 p.m. at a right turn. Wiegmann treated at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. Crandall charged with operating while intoxicated. bond set at 500. Leonard Crandall fined 100 for intoxication. both Crandalls refused bond and fine Sunday.
The Babe Ruth team joins a Rockford tournament with games set July 31, August 2 and August 5. Pairings include Floyd versus Marble Rock at 7:00 p.m. Monday, Greene versus Rudd at 8:30 p.m., then Rockford versus the Floyd-Marble Rock winner and Nora Springs versus the Greene-Rudd winner on Wednesday, culminating in the August 5 championship.
Twenty scouts from Greene earned a total of 45 awards during a week-long encampment at the Winnebago Scout Reservation. Numerous named scouts earned Life Saving, Forestry, Pioneering, Cooking, Rowing, Mile Swim, and Order of the Arrow distinctions, with several advancing toward 1st and 2nd Class Scout ranks.
New residents Mr and Mrs Dan Barth welcomed a daughter named Jane Louise on Saturday July 22 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces. Mrs Barth is Marjorie Merfeld and Mr Barth is Gale Barth. Mr and Mrs Lee Bartels of Cedar Falls welcomed a daughter named Kathy Lynne on Tuesday July 18 at Sartori Hospital Cedar Falls weighing 6 pounds 15 ounces.
Tuesday evening games featured the Indians defeating the Braves 8 to 7 and the Yankees topping the Pirates 10 to 8. Standings show Yankees 1 Indians 1 Braves 3 Pirates 3. Greene's local league lights removal ends further play. Flower show at Greene high school August 1 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. with workshop by Opal Wardinger at 2:30. Will Fuerst Sr aged 91 dies Monday at Gardner Nursing Home Colfax after months as patient. Born June 19 1870 he moved to Greene January 1 1940 and lived there until 1954 then with son Will Jr in Newton. Survived by two sons two daughters six grandchildren fifteen great grandchildren one sister and three brothers. Funeral today Wednesday at 2 30 p m Battle Creek Nebraska burial at Battle Creek.
The Greene Iowa Post Office will relocate to a new building this week with August 1 1961 as the deadline for the move. Old equipment will be moved and stored as needed and boxes will receive letter based combinations replacing numeric codes. Box holders will receive new box cards and keys for certain box types must be signed for.
Work is underway at the Athletic Field to complete the lighting project. Volunteers are sought to donate labor or money and should contact Darrel Barth as soon as possible.
Butler County residents invested 593,328 in U S savings bonds in June, lifting the six month total to 753,16b for 64 percent of the 1961 quota. John McWhirter of Allison, county chairman, reported June sales of Series E and H bonds in town were 10,377,590, yielding a state first-half total of 81,994,319 for 55 percent of its annual goal. The national average for the period was 52 percent.
