This weekend Greene hosts the monthly River Daze Sale sponsored by the Greene Commercial Club. Stores offer specials and in store bargains in honor of the event. Shoppers are urged to visit Greene Friday and Saturday and check the River Daze ads in this Recorder issue.
Emil Blaas 735 of Greene died Tuesday July 16 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo born January 16 1899 in Butler County to Fred and Emma nee Kramer Blaas. Survived by wife Milenda Greene daughter Mrs Marvin Voigts brother Will Blaas Allison two grandchildren three great grandchildren. Funeral Friday July 19 at St John s Lutheran Church Wilmar burial Wilmar Cemetery Rev John Reents officiated Reid s Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Stephen J. Rapp Democratic candidate for the 3rd District was introduced by Herman Faber, Grassley’s campaign manager, at the Butler County Fair. Rapp said it was a rare chance to speak before such a large crowd, noting the contrast with his opponent’s team.
Funeral services for William Bumgardner 60 a former Greene area resident who died Sunday at University Hospital in Iowa City were held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Fayette on Wednesday July 17 with burial in Calvary Cemetery Waterloo He is survived by his wife Celeste and three sons Dennis Hawkeye Galen Waterloo and Wilbur at home two brothers Vern Fayette and Claude California two sisters Mrs Violet Smith and Mrs Henry Meht Waterloo and two daughters Wilma and Berdine who preceded him in death.
The Greene Little Leaguers beat Rudd 6 to 3 in a Monday night first half game at Rudd. Pitcher Jeff Eimers struck out nine and allowed only two hits. Ryan Smith hit a third inning homer with Jay Majewski aboard and Eimers scored on Danny Meyne's fourth inning single to take the lead. Insurance runs came on Shultz and Bigier hits with Hawker scoring on Shultz's hit. Next game is 6:00 at Rudd against Marble Rock, winner to finals at 6:00 Saturday.

The Greene Jaycees renew their annual charity softball match with Greene girls at 2 p.m. on Sunday July 28 to raise funds for the local ball program. The younger Jaycees seek new members after last year’s defeat and rumors about Julie Johnson circulate as the game approaches.
Diana Northington 23, former Charles City resident, died July 15 after a two car crash and four days in hospital in Omaha. Funeral at Hausers Funeral Home July 18 officiated by Rev. Robert Barnett with burial in Riverside Cemetery Rockford. Survived by three children, parents Roger Berk Mason City and Phyllis Ricken dack Omaha, and grandparents Leach and Hesse of Charles City.

The Greene Girl Scout Cookie Session will be held August 7 to August 9 at Camp Gaywood in Clear Lake. All attendees meet at Perrin Park on Thursday August 1 at 9 30 a.m. for planning. Call Mrs. Dan Barth or Mrs. Jim Schroeder if you cannot attend the planning meeting.
The petit jury drawn for the third quarter has been announced by clerk Jane Sylvester. Prospective area jurors include Willard Marsh and Paul Mull from Greene, Bernard Baldwin and Gerald Marzen from Marble Rock, among others.
The event at Perrin Park starts at 6 30 p m with a potluck dinner. Softball baseball and girls and boys track and golf awards will be presented. Attendees are asked to bring one meat dish and one other dish and the public is invited.
The pool hosts a 9 am meet with Rockwell on Saturday July 27. Everyone is invited to cheer. towels and lost items are available for check. Also notes a water sample success and local Airman Dennis J. Ewen's Davis-Monthan service history. Social Security rep visits Allison Aug 13 and 27 from 9 am to 2 pm at the Sheriff’s Building basement to aid residents unable to travel to Waterloo. Waterloo office hours and contact provided.
Greene high school softball moved to 10-8 with three wins in league and sectional action. Julie Johnson shone on the mound in all games, guiding Greene past Charles City 13-12 in a late rally, Plainfield 10-4, and Nora Springs 11-7. Deb McGee drove in five in the opener, while Linda Gromley Pam Miller and Janet Schafer added key hits as Greene built a late lead and held on.
Greene Ramblerettes drop 7 6 in round two of sectional play as Sheffield Chapin Ramblerettes rally from 4 0 after 4 innings to win with two outs in the seventh. Linda Grumley leads with a triple and a single while Pam Miller adds bunt singles ending her high school career.
Demolition Derby winners were announced with heats led by Clarence Aukes Kenn Havig and Jeff Johnson in heat one and Larry Franken Alan Stockdale and Bill Hansen in heat two. Dwight Pralle Gary Droste and John M. Smith claimed heat three with Kim Dix Galen Winterberg and Charlie Dpapa in heat four. Kim Dix of Wellsburg won the Demolition Derby Champion title and Alan Stockdale of Aplington finished as runner-up.
