Greene's softball squad went 2 and 1 in league games last week. They beat New Hampton 19 to 9 on Sunday July 3 behind Bob Nordmeyer and Charles Meek, crushed Marble Rock 14 to 1 on Thursday, and lost to Powersville 10 to 7 in eight innings on Sunday. Meek pitched a four hitter against Marble Rock and also faced Powersville. Stauffer pitched for Powersville. Greene hosts Nashua next Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

At the July 6 meeting the Butler County Farm Bureau Board approved plans to establish a farmer owned hog marketing center in Butler County. Warren Severs, survey chair, noted 75 percent support for a livestock buying station and Eckles named the first Livestock Advisory Committee including Severs and members from Clarksville Allison Dumont Bristow and others to select a site and oversee sign up programs.

Greene High School Ramblers defeated Iowa Falls 6 to 4 in eight innings to open the sectional at Sheffield. A seventh inning tie gave way in the eighth when Devies and Miller walked and an errant throw allowed Deiies to score from second. Kilnder delivered a key hit in the sixth as Greene earned the win with 3 hits and 12 walks against Mulford and Reiber. Greene advances to face the winner of Dumont versus Franklin Consolidated in Friday’s semifinal at 2:00 pm.

Greene teacher wins grant for Tempe Summer Institute
Laverne J. Kehoe of Greene has a National Science Foundation funded grant to attend ASU Tempe's Summer Institute for Senior and Junior High School Teachers of Chemistry and Physics. The program runs from June 27 to August 20, spans eighty weeks, and carries six semester hours credit upon completion. Kehoe, a Greene physics teacher, joins 59 teachers in a project directed by Dr. Alan T. Wager to refresh and integrate physics and chemistry teaching.

Embezzlement Charge Against Allan in Butler County Jail

New crafts included hot pads coasters coin purses and pot holders continued. a marshmallow and wiener feast occurred with help from Mr. Jerry Eimers and Father Mier. About 100 children attended swimming lessons in Charles City on Tuesday.

The Marble Rock Fire Department answered a Thursday afternoon alarm around two o clock to a barn fire on the Will Boom farm. The barn was destroyed though no livestock were harmed. The cause remains unknown as the blaze was spotted by Mr. Boom.

Farmers Can File Now for Gas Tax Refunds
Butler County farmers may file for federal gasoline tax refunds between July 1 and October 31, 1960 for gas used on farms during the year ended June 30. A 4 cent per gallon refund on gas bought after October 1, 1959, is noted, with 3 cents per gallon for gas used July 1 to October 1, 1959. No refunds on gas used in vehicles on public roads or for non agricultural use. Claim forms will arrive by mail to previous filers. Forms available at the County Extension Office in Allison.
