The Butler County fair sponsors a horseshoe tournament starting July 28, with finals at 4 00 p m on July 31. Two divisions run daily 4 00 p m until the grand stand program. one for Butler County residents and a general entry event. The fair board provides $25 for expenses for both tournaments and offers a chance to qualify for the state fair.

Last week a gathering at the home of Mr and Mrs Ralph Behnke included Mr and Mrs Ray Holaschuh and Dale plus Mr and Mrs Richard Wickman and three daughters from Portland Oregon, Mrs Rodney Henry and children from Klamath Falls Oregon, and Mr and Mrs Clayton Behnke and Richard Smith Jr of Omaha Nebraska.
Funeral services were held at Faith Baptist Church Marble Rock for Carl C Friedrichs 69 who died Wednesday morning July 5 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City He was born in Germany January 19 1898 and came to the United States at 14 settling near Aredale Bristow later moving to Marble Rock in 1928 to farm until retirement in 1963 He is survived by his wife Ingeborg two sons Robert Mt Vernon Leroy Clear Lake five daughters Evelyn Staudt Carol Hearn Mary Koenigsfeld Wilma Fleming Marble Rock two brothers William Hampton August Germany and 21 grandchildren Rev Sheral Gregory officiated Reid's Funeral Chapel had charge Burial was Westside Cemetery Marble Rock
New resident Mr. and Mrs. Larry Voigts welcomed a daughter named Kristin Margaret born Friday July 7 at Mercy Hospital Waverly. The infant weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces. Grandparents are Ray and Luella Jacobson Clarksville and Fred and Betty Voigts Greene, with great grandparents Frank and Lorraine Eichmann Clarksville.
Contest winners Joan Senne Carl Earnhart and Jayne Geesman placed 1st 2nd and 3rd in the children's decorated bicycle event on Tuesday July 4.
Supt and Mrs V J Tatum returned from Minneapolis where they spent a week at the National Education Association annual meeting. Nearly 300 Iowans attended the 105th convention July 2 to 7 with topics on teacher duties in negotiations, early education, ethics code revision, and more. The final program featured talks by Dr I Applegate and Hubert Humphrey. Tatum serves as NEA director for the North Central District of the Iowa State Education Association.
Mr and Mrs George A Marino of Collingswood New Jersey spent the week end in the home of Mr and Mrs Nenry Dralle during a social visit.
Free archery lessons sponsored by the Woman's Club start Monday July 17 at 7:00 p.m. for children in grades 5 through 12. Meet at the elementary school grounds. instructor is Dwight Barnhart. Children should bring their own bow and arrows.
Captain and Mrs. Paul Mather and daughters Susan and Diane spent three weeks with their parents in Greene at Mrs Fran Bonzer and Mr and Mrs Eldred Mather. They left Thursday for a new home in Washington D C. Cpl Mather earned a master’s in aeronautical engineering at the University of Wyoming and is now assigned to Andrews Air Force Base Maryland.
The American College Testing will be given at Greene Community School on Saturday August 5. All students wishing to take the test must register by Saturday July 15 at the school.
Butler County 4 H youth will showcase senior and junior demonstrations at the Allison basement of the Butler County Rural Electric Coop under Extension Assistant Roberta Reckler. Senior demos start Monday July 17 at 7:00 p.m. with selections for the Iowa State Fair, National Dairy Cattle Congress, and North Iowa Fair in Mason City. July 18 features junior boys at 7:00 p.m. and junior girls July 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Open to all county residents. County 4 H officers and the 4 H Youth Committee assist.

The Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosted the first round of the annual men’s club golf tournament with Bob Curtis earning medalist honors at two over par 74. Rhonda Majewski aged 14 daughter of Mr and Mrs Melvo Majewski had a tonsillectomy last Wednesday at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City. She returned home on Thursday.
Guy V Newcomer 76 died Friday June 30 in North Fort Myers Florida Born June 27 1891 in Hesper Iowa he earned a BS from Upper Iowa University and a master's in education from Iowa University He married Helen Hoyt in Decorah on September 3 1914 He served Greene High School as superintendent 1932 to 1938 Survived by three daughters and seven grandchildren Funeral services were held in Fort Myers and Decorah with burial in Decorah Phelps Cemetery

Mr and Mrs John Pablovic and Mr and Mrs Albert Rump of Chicago Illinois visited the Marsh residence for a weekend gathering at the home of Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh.
Neil Burroughs of Greene and Bill Borchard of Marble Rock join 40 Scouts from Winnebago Council at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. They train at the university of the great outdoors and will hike 214 square miles under ranger guidance with staff led activities in geology, mining, archaeology, mountaineering and wilderness skills.
Butler County Fair opens at Allison on July 27 for five days of events. Jose Chitwood Thrill Show on Thursday at 7 PM. annual horse show Friday at 1:30 PM. Little Britches Rodeo Friday at 6:30 PM. Saturday and Sunday feature horse races at 1:30 PM and baseball games. Lamb and calf scramble and greased pig scramble Saturday at 7:15 PM. Wrestling Sunday night at 7 PM. Final day Monday features tractor pull elimination at 1:20 PM and championship at 7 PM. Proceeds from Greenville event support shelter house and civic projects.
Summer school classes at Allison cover poetry analysis and individual interpretation in English. Art I completed black and white studies then color composition, moving to two dimensional projects. Biology students studied elm disease, collected specimens, and prepared cultures before fossil field trips in Rockford with student guide Russell Jacobson.
Galen Miller's Braves won the opener 1 to 0 over the Dodgers as Mark Albrecht and Mark Miller pitched well. Jim Wiers hit a triple, Mark Albrecht a double, and several players added multiple singles for the Braves. The Yankees pulled away from the Orioles 6 to 4 on Jim McLennan's two run homer, with other hits from Adams and Constein. Orioles rallies fell short after tying the game earlier. In the final game, the Giants beat the Braves 8 to 4 as Steve Stanton earned the win despite walks, with Bob Wegand homering and Leavens, Smith, Stanton, and Eimers adding hits.
Visiting Mrs James McMahon and family of Santa Barbara California arrived Tuesday and will spend a month visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Lyle Maxson.
Newcomer Clyde Stuntz family returned to Greene from North Fort Myers Florida with her mother Mrs. Guy V. Newcomer. They were met in Chicago by Mrs. Francis Wilson who traveled to Greene. Also joining Greene were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Holmes Roger and Candy of Lincoln Nebraska. Funeral services for Guy W. Newcomer were held in Decorah. Mrs. Newcomer plans a visit with the Holmes family in Lincoln Nebraska for several weeks. Mrs. Wilson flew home to Medford Lakes New Jersey.
Mrs Robert Andersen and her children of Sigourney spent several days visiting in the homes of Mr and Mrs Wilson Ray and Dr and Mrs B V Andersen while her husband attended summer school at the Jawa State University at Ames. They returned home to Sigourney.
Visited Sisters Mr and Mrs Carl Kahuda and daughter Maxine of Yucaina California and Mrs J F Strickler and Miss Merle Kahuda of Storm Lake have been visiting in the homes of their sisters Mrs Clinton Lockwood and Mrs Grace Barnhart.
The Greene Little League and Babe Ruth squads defeated Rudd 14 to 2 and 5 to 4 on Thursday, and beat Nora Springs 8 to 2 Monday. Greene leads with 10 wins, 2 losses, and both teams are poised for at least a share of the league title. Jerry Shultz shined in pitching for Greene in the Babe Ruth win and Dan Eimers drove in four runs for the Little Leaguers.
