Robert Ruffridge son of Mr and Mrs Earl Ruffridge went to Des Moines last Tuesday evening and Wednesday completed his enlistment in the U S Air Force He is assigned to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio Texas
Dale Willey and Mrs Norman Wolters captured the Mixed Two Ball Foursome at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Saturday afternoon with a nine hole total of 46. Second went to George Sneed and Mrs Dean Uhlenhopp 47, Don Backman and Mrs Oscar Bartels 48, and Dell Curtis and Mrs Galen Martzahn 48. Oscar Bartels and Mrs Paul Hamilton won the flag hole prize and Darrell Davis and Mrs V J Tatum took the high round prize.
Boys from 24 states and Venezuela enroll in the 45th Shattuck summer school camp at Faribault Minnesota. The camp offers six weeks of mixed recreation and instruction with senior students earning credit, and afternoons devoted to sports and military drill.
A club breakfast is set for Sunday July 12 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Serving runs from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. Committeemen listed include Leonard Nichol Darrell Davis Paul Lewison Lyle Shultz Martin Senne Galen Martzahn and Harold Swant.
The Woman's Club park recreation program advances to its midway stage with a patriotic bicycle decorating contest. In boys division Rodney Truitt takes first, Tom Truitt second, Jim Truitt third. girls division Terry Bachman first, Patty Bachman second. staff members guide crafts, painting, and supplies. The playground theme centers on Alaska and Hawaii as work continues with many new colors and materials. Next week features circus week with costume day on July 16 and a full afternoon of activities led by local helpers.
Robert Burge, son in law of Mr and Mrs John McRoberts, recently graduated from the University of California School of Law at Berkeley in June. He was Phi Alpha Delta member and associate editor of the California Law Review. He earned a Ford Foundation fellowship for one month of legal research in England at Cambridge after six months of active Army Reserve duty.
Daryl Shook son of Mrs Lyle Shook has joined the Marines as part of the All Iowa Platoon. The 75 men left Des Moines Saturday for San Diego California where they will begin basic training.
Eveline Henke aged 89 died at her home in Greene on Saturday morning July 4 after months of illness. Born August 10 1869 in Marquette Iowa she was the daughter of Louis and Augusta Henke. Surviving are two brothers Frank of Aredale Louis of Springfield Mo two sisters Ida Henke Greene and Mrs Jennie Cutler Milesville SD plus two nieces two nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Funeral service 2 pm Tuesday at Hamiltons Funeral Chapel with Rev G F Butler First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Allen Tarr of Waterloo announce the birth of a son, Robert Allen, on July 2 at Shultz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. The infant weighed 7 pounds 8 1/2 ounces at birth. Mrs Tarr is formerly Barbara Shultz of Greene.
Supt V J Tatum will attend the Administrators Workshop at Iowa State College in Ames from July 13 to 31. The three week program, limited to 25 administrators by invitation, covers administration problems through lectures, small groups, and individual study. Office hours are 9 to noon Monday through Friday. bus routes are being planned. Parents with kindergarten registrations and new Greene Community residents with children entering the district are asked to register.
Roger Eugene Schuknecht was arrested in Greene Saturday night on a minor beer purchase charge and pleaded guilty in Franks Knights court, paying a $50 fine. Henry Miller of Aplington faced a driving while intoxicated charge Tuesday night east of Bristow on Highway 3, arraigned in Greene, bond set at 350, and released to the next district term.
The Wednesday Mixed League saw Pin Busters and Lucky Strikes tied with high scores, while Twenty Four Splits and Wood Choppers both fell to success for several pairs. Gertie Marsh led women with a 448 series and Barbara Stock added a 168 game. Jim McLennan topped men with 233 in a game and 602 in two games.
Wayne Thomason led the Mid-State Racing Association day with three firsts and a second across B Utility and B Hydro classes. He swept both B Utility heats and won one B Hydro heat while placing second in the other. Kenneth Stewart added a fourth in Class A Utility, boosting his season points. Les Bly from Sioux Falls claimed two firsts in A Utility, two thirds in A Hydros, and a D Hydro win.
Darlyl Smith and Jeanette Wirth, Greene High School graduates, received Luther College honorary scholarships for 1959 60. Each will get 300 dollars distributed as 100 dollars per semester across freshman, sophomore and junior years. Recipients must rank high in their class. Smith will major in elementary education and Wirth in vocal music education.
Miss Persis Pooley of Corpus Christi Texas spent the Fourth of July week visiting in Greene with Mr and Mrs Bert Pooley and Mr and Mrs Vernon Rottler. She attended the American Library Association meeting in Washington DC and planned to see relatives in New York City and Birmingham Michigan.
Band director Ray Holtz announces Hich Show marching band rehearsals next Monday Wednesday and Friday at 7 15 p m in preparation for the festival trip to Oelwein on Saturday July 18.
Mrs John Niehaus 78 died at her home Thursday after a stroke in 1956 and long illness. Survived by five sons Carl Greene Henry Fred Alfred Clarksville four daughters Walter Neubauer Waverly Anna Louise Esther at home five brothers Ernest Parkersburg Fred William Allison five sisters Mrs Ralph Wabbena Mrs Clyde Allen Allison Mrs Henry Voights Greene Mrs Gus Dietrich Ionia Mrs John Dornbusch Shell Rock six grandsons one great granddaughter. Husband and one sister Louise Voigts preceded her. Member of St John s Lutheran Church services conducted Sunday by Rev P C Matthias burial in Vilmar cemetery.
Attendees included Russell Poole Warren Hollingsworth and Mr and Mrs Ed Hicks at the funeral services for A. E. Molloy in Minneapolis Minnesota Monday afternoon.
Richard R Pooley son of Mr and Mrs Dwight S Pooley of Greene was promoted to corporal at Fort Bliss Texas He serves as supply clerk in Headquarters Battery of the 2d Guided Missile Battalion within the 1st Guided Missile Group Pooley joined the Army in January 1958 and trained at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri The 24 year old Greene High School graduate was formerly with Pooley Lumber Company before enlisting
Mrs. Tom Martin 94 died Thursday in a Mason City nursing home. Committal services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Larchwood Cemetery in Larchwood. She had lived in Greene for years with her brother Dell Merriau.

The Public Library adds new items including Shipley's Scarlet Lily about Canada and Paul Gallico's Mrs Y arms Goes To Paris. It replaces old Leewis with up to date sets and acquires the 1989 Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia in 15 volumes for junior high and high school use with reference indexing and bibliographies for further reading.
Greene Iowa clergyman named to join a new American Lutheran Church formed by a three way merger of ELC, ALC and UELC. The national church will be headquartered in Minneapolis with first conventions in 1960 and operations starting 1961. The 1959 Butler County Fair runs July 31 to August 3 with entry day, horse shows, races, free acts, 4-H livestock auction, and Tournament of Thrills.
Earl Chapman paid 10 costs in Frank Knight's Court last Wednesday for uttering a false check. Lulu Ida Harms of Charles City paid 5 for no operators license in Knight's Court Thursday. LeRoy Orville Rasmussen of Clarksville paid 5 each for no operators license in Knight's Court Thursday. Mrs. Judith C. Hughes of Canton South Dakota was fined 10 and 5 costs in Frank Knight's Court Monday for improper passing.
Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Sylvester of Greene announce their son John K. Sylvester has been promoted from captain to major in the United States Army. He is stationed at Fort Meade Maryland, and the Sylvester family resides in Hyattsville Maryland.
Post Challenge Board Matches played last week at Round Grove Golf and Country Club saw Drakle defeat Teeple and Willey beat Senne with Sneed topping Juntz. Stubbe defeated Stephenson and Stuntz beat Hamilton, Teeple beat Nauman, Senne defeated Willey, Curtis beat Sneed in the standings list.
Clarence McCracken fell at home Sunday noon breaking left hip. She was taken by ambulance to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, where Monday morning surgery inserted a pin to fix the fracture.
Charles Price was discharged from the Veteran's hospital in Des Moines and returned to his home in Greene last Tuesday.
Mrs Will McRoberts and Don McGee are listed as patients at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City receiving medical treatment.
Dodgers win 6 to 3 over the Yankees as Paul Hamilton shines on the mound and teammates Drake Fischer Hamilton and Poppe pace the offense. Pirates edge White Sox 10 to 9 in a see saw game with Marsh Litterer and Gabe keying the decisive rally and McRoberts delivering a triple. Next Tuesday Dodgers face Pirates and Yankees meet White Sox.

Mr and Mrs Howard Edler announce the birth of a son born Friday July 3 at 5 30 p m in Charles City. The baby weighs 7 pounds 5 1/2 ounces and has been named Timmie Lee.
