Population shifts loom over Iowa towns say experts
Captiol News notes half of Iowa towns may lose population through the 1960s. Conrad Stucky in the State University bureau of business and economic research says a population decline does not always signal poorer welfare. Forty percent of towns losing people between 1950 and 1960 saw higher retail sales, aided by higher agricultural input purchases. About 198 towns have populations under 200, with 102 losing residents. about 50 may be disappearing. Stucky foresees half of farms disappearing and population concentrating in 15 counties, with slow overall gain but continued outmigration. The Iowa Tax Commission unveils a five point plan for a better operation, said by Commission Chairman Andrew George.
