The announcement states Pyle Livestock owned by Glenn Pyle has been sold to Charles Stanton of Greene. Stanton took possession on January 1, 1959 and will continue purchasing all types of livestock while planning to carry on general trucking operations.
Roy Meehan county commander and Walter Kyle county adjutant attended a dinner Monday evening at Hotel Allison, Allison, for state district and county American Legion officers. A county meeting followed in the Farm Bureau auditorium after the dinner.
The Iowa State Department of Health warns hunters and rabbit handlers about Tularemia, or Rabbit Fever, mainly spread by rabbits and ticks. Wear gloves when dressing game, wash hands, cook meat thoroughly, and burn or bury visibly infected animals. Seek early medical care if symptoms such as fever and headache occur.
Mr. K C Lacy of Allison will speak at the Butler County Farmers Union meeting at Allison City Hall on January 9 at 8 00 p m. The public is invited to attend.
Jerry Ann Maxson daughter of Mr and Mrs Lyle Maxson flew to Denver Colorado on January 2 after visiting Greene. She resumed teaching on Monday.
Joseph P. Wagner 68 died Jan 6 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after a brief illness. Born March 18 1890 in New Haven he married Ruth Ross in 1911. A barber in Greene since 1927 he retired in 1957 after 31 years. Survived by wife two daughters four grandchildren three brothers and a sister. Funeral at St Marys Church Thursday 9:30 with burial at St Peters New Haven. Williams Mortuary in charge.
Mr and Mrs Harry Ipsen traveled to Denver on Thursday due to the serious illness of Mr Ipsens father who died Sunday They plan to return to Greene this weekend making a short family obituary note for the local page
Special Meetings begin January 12 at 8:00 p.m. at Powersville Alliance Church led by Rev. Clinton L. Johnson of Onamia Minnesota with nine years in ministry. Youth rally with visitors from other churches planned for January 17 as part of a series sponsored by Powersville Church young people.
Paul Beguelin came home last Wednesday from Cedar where he had undergone surgery.
The Rockwell Cooperative Telephone Association announced its purchase of the Aredale Cooperative Telephone Association of Aredale Iowa and plans to take over operations January 1 1959. Engineering work will convert Aredale to automatic dial and a new dial central office will be built. Construction of Rockwell and Dougherty exchanges is planned for late January with Dougherty to dial March 2 1959 and Rockwell on March 3 1959.
The women's team including Loretta Miller Evelyn Behnke Gertie Marsh Dawn Cheney and Dorothy Wedeking captured the district Farm Bureau bowling tournament at Independence with a 2973 team series, the state's top figure. On February 4 they won finals at Ames. The men's squad Galen Miler Ralph Behnke Ralph Marsh Paul Cheney and Lyle Wedeking also advanced to the Ames state finals posting a 2954 team series.
W Earl Hall editor of the Mason City Globe Gazette is named chairman of the Together Plan for the Winnebago Council BSA for a second year. Dr K B Kerr president of the council notes that the first council wide plan in spring 1958 organized 28 new Cub Scout and Explorer units and outlines a March 2 kickoff dinner in Mason City with county representatives to recruit more packs troops and posts across nine counties.
Greene Public Library circulates Bor's Doctor Zhivago inviting readers to form their own view. Martha Ostenso's A Man Has Tall Sons adds prairie farm saga to shelves. Richard Newcomb's Abandon Ship and Eleanor Roosevelt's On My Own circulate as favorites among readers.
The Board of Directors of Investors Mutual Inc declared a quarterly dividend of 9 cents per share payable January 15, 1959 to shareholders of record December 31, 1958. The payout comes from undistributed net investment income. the fund has about 128,050,000 shares outstanding and this marks the 73rd consecutive dividend.
John Hanawalt aged 80 died at 7:00 am Monday January 5 at Clair Rest Home after a December 26 stroke. Born December 4, 1878 in Iowa to Henry and Harriett Hanawalt he married Ethel Wells April 11, 1916. Survived by daughter Mrs George Williamson Greene son John Hanawalt Grants Pass Oregon brother George Conrad four grandsons. Burial in Harlan Cemetery near Dumont Rev James Parks officiating Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mrs Henry Smeins and Dennis and June Weiland of Bristow drove to Des Moines Sunday to see Private Craig Smeins on holiday leave. He departed by bus for San Diego California after time with his parents and sister in Hampton.
Mrs. Shirley Schwartz and her son Billy returned to Rochester Minnesota, Sunday, after a week long visit with her brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Robert Cur as.
The Ramblers defeated Riceville 42 to 31 as Curtis led with 14 points from 7 field goals and Grimm scored 13 for Riceville. Greenes led the Ramblers in a tight game, taking the lead midway the first period and pulling away after halftime to seal the 42 31 victory.
The Legion and VFW announce a joint meeting at the Veteran's Club on Tuesday evening January 13 at 800. All members are urged to attend.
Dr. Thomas A. Nettleton, 58, died January 2 after a months long illness at Mason Dry hospital. Born June 15 1900 in Butler County, he practiced dentistry in Mason City since 1923 after Creighton University and Forsyth Dental sessions. Survived by wife Hazel four daughters four sons mother two brothers four sisters and four grandchildren. Requiem Mass at St Josephs Catholic Church followed by burial with military rites.
Mr and Mrs George Merfeld of Greene celebrate 40 years of marriage with an open house at the Veterans Club Greene on Sunday January 11 from 2 to 5 pm They were wed January 7 1919 at St Patrick Catholic Church in Letia Iowa The couple has nine children seven living with several in Charles City Corvallis Oregon Stanwood Grundy Center and Greene Also 15 grandchildren two sons are deceased. Bob Barnett family drove their son Dean to Atlantic on New Year’s Day and he heads to Colorado State University Fort Collins.

Mr Clifford Lessard coordinator of adult education in Charles City Schools will speak. Mr and Mrs Robert Curtin lead the refreshment committee representing subdistrict parents.
