Heavy wet snow fell Friday night with 2 to 3 inches common in many areas and about 6 inches near Allison. Other parts of the state recorded higher totals as temperatures for the prior week are listed for the 24 hour period before the referenced date.
Funeral services for Lydia Downing 87 of Greene were held at St Mary Church with burial at St Mary Cemetery. Born August 19 1888 in rural Charles City she died February 23 at Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She is survived by her brother William Adams and several nieces and nephews. Cindy Brinkman one of five national winners in the Cappy Dick Hobby Contest received the Whitman Games Chest prize.
The Dr Dental Development Committee met Sunday afternoon to report on actions since last November’s election. Reports covered four committees with Dr George Orndorff, noting site searches for a new office, modular building options, elevator feasibility, and financing for dental facilities in Greene. unauthorized coffee and cookies were served after a brief adjournment.
Roger Isenberg a noted Gospel singer from Southern Minnesota will perform at the United Methodist Church spring banquet on March 4 at 6 30 pm. Only 100 tickets are available at Maxson Cleaners. The event includes a baked steak meal catered by Marge's Corner House.
At the Kappa Iota meeting on Monday February 16 Becky Heidenwirth was crowned Valentine Queen. Members planned spring rush, Perrin Park repairs, Meals on Wheels volunteering weeks, and the Ritual of Jewels for 9 pledges later.
Ellen Maria Allen Hillegas daughter of Ervie and Leota Allen born January 6 1897 Floyd County is described. She studied in rural Floyd County and Mankato Business College later worked as a legal secretary for Judge Graven. She married Herbert Hillegas March 29 1925 at the Little Brown Church Nashua. They farmed ran a hotel and apartment business. Survived by son Robert and daughter Lucy six grandsons one granddaughter and three sisters. Her husband died November 20 1968.
The Senior Girl Scouts will pick up papers this Sat Feb 28. Have them at the curb by 10 a.m. Papers may be in boxes bags or tied bundles. A marked vehicle will serve rural residents at the parking lot across from Pooley Lumber Co. Papers go to Harold's Service Center near Nashua for insulation making.
Pack 26 of Greene will hold the Blue and Gold banquet on Wednesday February 25 at 6:30 PM at the Greene Community Center. Attendees should bring one meat dish and one additional covered dish.
Mrs JoAnn Peterson has been named 1976 Butler Co Heart Fund Chair man. Area chairmen include Mrs Dean Debner of Aredale and Mrs Jim Stuntz of Greene. Township chairs are Mrs Galen Lindell Coldwater, Mrs Galen Brinkman Dayton and Mrs Paul Kramer. Bennerzette chair for Greene is Mrs James Draile.
The nutrition site in the basement of the Community Center lists daily meals from March 1 to March 31. Dishes include pork chops, fried fish, beef dishes, and varied sides with desserts, with lunches rotating weekly and featuring salads and fruit.
The Greene girls basketball team finished 10-10 and will return six letterwinners next season led by Bev Brinkman and Laura Harris as the only seniors. Junior letterwinners include Diana Beck Sherri Kuittleson Kathy Nordmeyer and Kari Schmidt. Jane Kanter Laura Harris and others set school records with high rebound and scoring marks while earning all conference recognition.
The Rams defeated Dumont 91 to 35 as fourteen Rams scored led by Paul Anderson and John Van Eschen with 14 each. Greene shot 56.6 percent and led boards 40 to 22. Randolph Smith, Mardy Eimers and Randy Smith contributed key numbers. Semifinals set for Wednesday at 7:00 Clarksville vs Allison and 8:30 Greene vs Nashua with sectional finals Thursday at 7:30.
