Worthy J. Ellis of Sumner a former Greene resident died Monday in Sumner Funeral services set for Thursday at 1 30 PM at Milnes Funeral Home Sumner Will Bangs of Greene noted as a brother in law of the deceased.
The Greene Community School hosts the Parent-Teachers Association next Tuesday night March 1 at 8 00. Ray Voltz opens with a dance band performance and three soloists. Family fun night follows with Vern Remy of Nashua presenting magic. A bake sale, auctioneer Franklin Schuknecht, and packaged baked goods support the year’s sole fund raiser as first grade parents provide refreshments.
Mrs Wilbur Shafer died at her Des Moines home on Tuesday February 15 after influenza illness. Former Minnie Butler born at Clarksville lived in Greene area, resident of Des Moines 23 years. Survived by sons Burr Neosho Missouri Lynn Houston Texas Max Winterset, daughter Ruth Shafer Des Moines, six grandchildren. Private funeral at Bahlstrom Funeral Home Des Moines at 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Burial in Des Moines cemetery.
Ten persons were picked up Friday evening in a radar check on the blacktop road west of Greene. Before Justice of the Peace Frank Knight they paid fines from 6 to 14 dollars plus costs, with two to appear later. In Mayor Kelly’s Court, speeding cases included Viers at 35 dollars plus 5 costs, Phearman 10 dollars and 4 costs, Millwall 15 dollars and 4 costs, Silbee 10 dollars and 4 costs.
Mrs Frank Lockwood returns home Sunday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after a two week stay for treatment.
Mrs Mary Ingraham was taken to Cedar Valley Hospital on Monday for a checkup after an earlier admission for a fractured hip.
E P Sylvester Extension Weed Specialist from Iowa State University will speak at a county wide Weed Control Meeting on Wednesday March 2 at 130 pm in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. Kay Connelly urges attendance. The talk covers weed control general management sprays pre emergence and new recommendations. Wet soil may hinder cultivation this year. A 50 pound drum of Dowpon will be door prize for a attendee.
The Greene Ramblerettes ended 1959-60 in third place in the Corn Bowl Conference with a 4-4 mark. They started with 25 players and will graduate seniors Maureen Allison Mary Roose and Sally Bartels. Leading scorer Saundra Curtis tallied 318 points, including a 42 point game.

A union service for World Day of Prayer will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday evening March 4 at 8 98 o'clock with Church of the Brethren and First Methodist Church members taking part. The event linked to a global prayer effort in 660 languages and 1 000 dialects. Proceeds fund Christian leadership programs in India Pakistan Korea Japan Africa and Latin America and support nursery orphanages in French Cameroun among other aims.
The State Conservation Department will stock northeast Iowa streams with 400 brood trout weighing about four pounds each. Last year 180.00 trout, including 40,000 from the Fish and Wildlife Service, were stocked, with some not reaching anglers and a few remaining to reproduce, promising ongoing stocking throughout the seasons for year round fly fishing.
Rev. Marvin Heninga was installed as minister at St. John Lutheran Church in Jesup on Sunday. Attending were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Benim, plus Freda Maass and several Wunsch and Kienreichmidt families. En route, the Beningas and Maass were in a one car accident three miles north of Waterloo after hitting ice. the car spun into a ditch, remained upright, and rested on rocks. Occupants were shaken and bruised.
Butler County authorities investigate multiple break ins including Bauman's Livestock Exchange in Allison where a Black Paymaster Check Writer and two 14 foot log chains were stolen. Eugene Pred Graham pleaded guilty to larceny and was sentenced to ten years then paroled. Jerry Frey pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and fined. A 1959 Pontiac rear ended a snow plow on Highway No. 2 near Allison, and two rural Greene area schools were burglarized, with a radio clock oil burner fan and five dollars stolen.
Fractured wrist suffered by Miss Irene Thompson after a fall on Saturday on ice at her South Main Street home. The injury required a cast and she is recuperating at home.
The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross announces its annual Kick Off meeting Friday February 26 at 8:00 p.m. in Allison City Hall. All volunteers and interested residents are urged to attend. Glen Steech, former Waterloo mayor and regional fund drive chairman, will speak.
Margaret Nixt has accepted a civilian staff nurse position in the pediatric department at 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt Germany with the Northern Area Command. A 1959 graduate of St Mary's School of Nursing Rochester Minnesota and Greene High School class of 1956 she sailed from Montreal September 1 with classmate Sylvia Stier Grand Meadow Minnesota for an extended tour of Europe. A market judging workout for Butler County 4-H members will be held next Saturday February 27 at 9:00 am. at the Warren Severs farm near Clarksville. Four or five classes of market hogs and breeding gilts will be judged focusing on estimating weight backfat and grade. The event aids in selecting a judging team for the Fort Dodge Market Hog Show at the end of March and serves as a refresher for summer judging activities. All interested boys may attend. Mark Maxwell, six year old son of Mr and Mrs Gordon Maxwell of Charles City, is a patient in the Children’s Hospital at the University Hospital of Iowa City receiving treatment for leukemia of the marrow of the bone.
A young Methodist layman from Clinton Iowa will speak at the Methodist Church on Sunday February 28 at 10 45 am. Courlinson recently returned from a missionary furlough after three years at Wembo Nyama Congo mission where he led a model farm teaching agriculture and livestock care to 100 boarding students and doing evangelistic work. He and his wife Mary have two daughters aged 10 and 8.
The Sportsmen's Club held its annual oyster supper and officer election at the Veterans Club. Elected president was James McLennan, vice president William Bohl of Marble Rock, and secretary treasurer Claire Curtis. New directors for three years are Lyle Shultz, Lyle Maxson, Carl Worley, Edwin Marzen and Henry Smeins.
The one act play Balcony Scene and Bruce Mead’s humorous reading Treasurer's Report won firsts at the district speech contest in Mason City last Saturday. The results advance the team to the state contest at Grinnell on March 19. Cast includes Mead Grendler Wunsch Backer Reed Bartels Allison Jackson with Rita Kepple as student assistant.

The State Conservation Department reports top ice fishing above the dam at Harpers Ferry in mid February. Backwater ice reaches 18 inches with pan size bluegills taken on red worms and mousses. Below the dam boats fish with minnowed jigs for walleyes and sauger around three pounds. cold weather could keep the area good.
