Sometime during the coming week Greene residents are urged to contribute to a fund raising campaign for the Girl Scouts. The note praises the program for teaching leadership and civic virtue. A local call to support the North Iowa Girl Scout Council asks residents to give as much as they can and reflect on the good done by prior donations.
The Greene district sent its first state qualifying group to Grinnell for the March 18 19 state contest. Debaters from Wareene Jerry Knight Kenneth Parks Bruce Mead Ronald Crooks and Jerry Backer competed at West High Waterloo on February 12. Greene also fields Jane Kretzschmar Bruce Mead Sally Bartels Mary Lou Squires in Mason City February 20 in two events with Backer directing speech activities under Mrs Richard Wagoner.
Rodney Smock, 26, of Waterloo, was arrested Tuesday February 9 by the Waterloo Sheriff's office for the Allison area on a false pretenses charge. He allegedly gave a $10 Parkersburg check payable to John Smock and signed it Rodney Smock then endorsed it John Smock. He was arraigned in J.P. Court at Allison, bond $600, and is held in the Butler County Jail after failing to post bond.
An all school dance will be held in the school lunchroom on Saturday February 20 from 7 30 to 11 00 p m Grades 9 through 12 are invited to attend. The event is sponsored by the F F A Chapter.
Harry G. Gibson 77 of Kesley died unexpectedly at home Monday evening. Born January 27, 1883, he married Clara Scarrow in 1909. They farmed until 1938 and celebrated their 50th anniversary last fall. Surviving are his wife two sons Marion Greene Darrell Guthrie Minnesota two daughters Mrs Orley Alden and Mrs Rex Townsley Greene several grandchildren and great grandchildren Funeral services at Hamilton's Funeral Chapel 2 00 p.m. Thursday Rev George Knutson officiating Burial in Hitesville Cemetery near Kesley.
Lennox Industries conducted a training school in Marshalltown Iowa covering heating and cooling service and installation. Max R Heidenwirth of Greene Farm Equipment & Agriculture Co attended, part of the annual Lennox schools in the Marshalltown division with attendance averaging 30 to 40 participants.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Skillen returned home Sunday evening from a six weeks sojourn in Texas. Among places visited were McAllen and Houston, Texas, and Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Marine Pfc Merrill J Peters, son of Mr and Mrs John Peters of Greene Iowa, completed four weeks of individual combat training at Camp Pendleton California and returns home for a twenty day furlough with his family. The course covered infantry tactics first aid demolitions field fortifications and weapons training. Trainees were taught that all Marines are essentially infantrymen regardless of their actual duties.
Early February 13 theft at the D-X Station in Parkersburg saw 30 tires taken in varying sizes and finishes, including white wall and black varieties. The Allison Sheriff's office investigates the case as a theft.
Robert V. Fischer of Greene joins the Creative Services Department at Dr. Salsbury's Laboratories in Charles City. He studied at Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls Iowa State University Ames LSU Baton Rouge and Oklahoma University Norman, with LSU and Oklahoma during World War II. After service he ran the Iowa Recorder Greene for nine years and then moved into farm publishing. For thirty years he has been news editor of the Charles City Daily Press. He is married with four sons aged 7 to 14.
Mr and Mrs Benjamin Weyand welcome their daughter Christy Jeanne born Thursday February 12 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The infant weighs 7 pounds 11 ounces and joins the Weyand family as a new resident in the community.
The Greene area starts its first Girl Scout drive next Sunday through Saturday to support camps, leadership, and administration for over 3,000 girls in the north Iowa council. Budgeted at 45,625.25, funds come from federated financing, camps, and cookie sales. canvassers include Martin Senne and a list of local volunteers.
Daniel J. Feyereisen, born March 2 1890 in Greene, died of a heart condition in Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. World War I veteran, served overseas, married Pearl Moss of Greene December 29 1919. Survived by widow, three sisters, one brother, and son Robert who died overseas in 1945. Requiem High Mass at St Marys Church, burial in St Marys Cemetery with military honors. Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Greene Community School seeks applicants for a 1960 61 custodian position July 1 1960 to June 30 1961 with annual renewal. It also plans to hire a 12 month bus mechanic for the same dates. Applications to Supt V J Tatum before March 14 1966.
The Ramblers beat Nora Springs 60 to 47 while Ramblerettes won 54 to 53. Saundra Curt led with 42 points in the Ramblerettes as Reed, Roose, and Bartels contributed on defense. Reed and Allison fouled out for Nora Springs as the host team narrowed the margin late.
Greene Community Schools instrumental students from grades 4 through 8 joined 80 solos and 11 ensembles at the fourth annual Grade School Music Festival in Mason City sponsored by the North Central Iowa Bandmasters Association. Seven ensembles and 40 solos earned superior ratings. four ensembles and 20 solos earned excellent ratings. Instrumental solos earning blue ribbons included flute, clarinet, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, cornet, alto sax, trombone, and snare drum, with names of performers and ensembles listed. Piano accompanists were named.
Myrta Aurelia Newbern Butler, 82, died February 10 at Boone County Hospital after a long illness. Born September 26, 1877 near Greene, she married William Whalen Butler on July 3, 1897. Survived by sister Florence Gehring of Phillips, Wisconsin, she moved to Boone in 1911 and raised two sons Cecil Dale and Gerald Carl. Funeral service February 13 at Welines Funeral Chapel, burial at Lynwood Park Cemetery. her husband and two sons preceded her.
Dr Carl C Malone Extension Economist of Iowa State University will speak at the Greene high school gym on Tuesday February 23 at 8 00 p m. The talk targets local business farmers church leaders and property owners to discuss rural Iowa challenges and possible industry development for part time jobs. Malone renowned for farm management and public farm policy expertise will outline issues and potential directions for Greene and the surrounding community.
William F. Manke of Charles City fined $10 for speeding with $5 suspended and $4 costs in Mayor Kelly's court. Lester Huisman of Wellsburg fined $10 and $4 costs for speeding. Orville Stoffregen of Cedar Falls, in J P Knight's court, fined $5 and $3 costs for failure to dim lights.
The Butler County Conservation Board outlines 1959 work across three areas Camp Comfort near Greene Lake Considine near Dumont and Shell Rock area. Projects include dam improvements roads ditches picnic facilities staging bridges and site clearing with future plans for seeding dredging and expanded river access. The board lists members Herman Faber Kline Shipman Wayne Weinberg Tom Albrecht and John Harms.

A truck from Draper Truck Line Humboldt rolled downhill after brakes failed at the Highways 3 and 11 junction near Allison. It struck a parked car owned by 20 year old Donald Heeren of Allison while both drivers were inside a cafe having coffee.
