The editor urges urgent solutions to civil rights, pollution, housing, education, and health hazards from water contamination. He warns that urban strife may rise this spring and stresses leadership to address domestic issues before worsening. A Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet is set for February 27 at Greene Elementary with a 6:30 dinner.
Mrs Kathryn M Duffield local chairman of the Christmas Seal campaign announced that Greene residents contributed 319.00 in the drive. The top reached last year was 305.00.
Twenty six students completed the first semester at Westmar College, with spring commencement set for May 26. Dennis Eckhoff of Greene will receive a Bachelor of Science in industrial arts among the graduates, which include twelve from Iowa and four from Minnesota.
Musicians from Clarksville Waverly and Shell Rock topped the Willie Wiredhand Talent Hunt during the Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative meeting in Allison on February 14. Winners include The Matadors from Clarksville Chris Peterson of Waverly and Lynda Huisman of Shell Rock. The Matadors are Allan Rohiwing Joel Topp Rod Johnson Steve Ulrichs and Chris Hardy. They advance to the 1968 National Dairy Cattle Congress finals in Waterloo on September 28 facing other regional winners.
The Ramblerettes defeated Aplington 55 to 52 in the girls sectional at Aplington on Monday. Greene started strong but Aplington led at halftime before a late Ramblerette rally, aided by a disciplined guard court, sealed the win. Marilyn Johnson hit 23 of 25 at attempts in the free throw contest and Parkersburg beat Allison in the curtain raiser.
Edna Hildebrand 96 died February 14 at her Greene home. Born April 24 1871 in Illinois she lived in Greene all life. She married Julius Hildebrand in 1903 who died in 1938. Survived by daughter Ruthie Hicks and a brother-in-law Edward Hildebrand. Funeral at Reid's Chapel with Rev. Welsh, burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
Three Rambler wrestlers will compete in the District tournament at Tripoli on Friday and Saturday February 23rd and 24th. Douglas Trees, son of Mr and Mrs Duane Trees, enters the 112 pound class. Duane Leavens, son of Mr and Mrs Duane Leavens, competes in the 120 pound division and Steve Stuntz, son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Stuntz, fights in the 145 pound class. Trees and Leavens won first place and Stuntz took second in the sectional meet.
Mr and Mrs Norman Graven welcome a boy born Monday February 18 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 9 pounds 4 ounces. The baby named Kurt Norman. Grandparents James H Graven Greene and F W Bends Quasqueton. Mr and Mrs Lee Jepsen Dumont announce a son born February 14 at Mercy Hospital Mason City weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces. Named Steven Paul. Grandparents Charles Logemann Northwood and Lawrence Jepsen Greene.
Mac Kaiser underwent surgery Monday morning at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He is reported to be in stable condition and under postoperative care.
The Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative held its annual meeting on February 14 in Allison Iowa with record attendance. Leo Greco and his Band entertained at the high school gym while the Willie Wiredhand Talent Contest announced finalists for the 1968 Dairy Cattle Congress. Directors Roger Peterson Galen Neal and Elston Blume were elected for three year terms. officers Art Rieckenberg vice president John Scallon secretary and Harold Taylor treasurer were named.
The Ramblers face Nora Springs in the first round of the boys sectional tournament at Rockford on Monday night February 26 at 8 30 p m Allison meets Immaculate Conception Charles City in the curtain raiser at 7 00 p m Tuesday’s schedule pairs winners in the second round with Clarksville and Rockford while Greene faces Nora Springs. finals set for Thursday February 29.
Mrs. Carl Dreier was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Waverly last week for treatment following a stroke. She expects to be hospitalized for several more days. Mrs. Dreier recently moved to Waverly from the farm east of Greene.
Jean Montgomery underwent surgery on Monday February 12 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. He expects to be hospitalized for at least another week with room 447 noted.
About 126 Greene Community Schools band students plus 14 accompanists and 4 chaperones performed solos and ensembles at Mason City. Judges awarded 65 blue ribbons, 46 red ribbons, 14 white. 14 ensembles earned superior, 6 excellent, 2 good. Numerous named soloists across flutes, clarinets, saxophones, cornets, trombones, and snare drums received top ratings. multiple accompanists and helpers listed.

Vernard Foster details inadequate lunch room facilities at the high school. Current storage limits force use of two small chest freezers and off campus storage, with poor ventilation and aging furniture. Plans call for a walk in freezer, better food storage, and a multi purpose lunch area separate from classrooms.
Mr and Mrs Roger Schuknecht welcomed a daughter named Jennifer Lynn born February 9 in Palm Desert California. A brother Jeffrey and sister Pamela greeted the newborn. Mrs Leo Frascht and Mr and Mrs Franklin Schuknecht of were mentioned in the report.
The Greene Fire Department was dispatched to Eldon Hauser’s farm east of Greene Monday at 1:50 PM to battle a grass fire threatening a corn crib. About 3 to 5 acres burned before firefighters stopped the blaze with no additional damage reported.
Jim Wiers sustained a severe injury to his right eye on Saturday morning while working on a school bus. He was about to release the emergency brake when the door opened partially and, while stooped, the door handle jammed into his eye.

Dean H. Poppe son of Mr. Dale E. Poppe of Greene attends the Aviation Electricians School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Jacksonville Florida. He studies electricity electronics aircraft electrical and instrument systems troubleshooting and repair. He also receives refresher courses in mathematics and physics. The Ramblers and Ramblerettes clinched sole possession of the Corn Bowl Conference crowns after Ramblers defeated Rockford 70 to 42. Greene led the Ramblers with 17 points and Siemens had 17 in a balanced attack. Rottler led the Ramblerettes with 24 as they posted a 71 to 42 win over the Warriorettes to complete a 47th consecutive conference win for the girls, a streak that began years ago.
Clarence Pyle 78 of 710 West 2nd Street Waterloo died Friday at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo from cancer. Born February 12 1890 in Franklin County son of William and Sarah Pyle he farmed tiling in Franklin and Butler Counties until 1952. Survived by sisters Elsie Mary and brother Pearl all of Waterloo and two brothers Henry Glendale California Milton Geneva. Butler County Republicans announce caucus dates to elect delegates for the County Convention on March 22 at the Butler County Courthouse. Caucuses begin 7:30 p.m. March 4 at Kesley, Aplington, Glen Stockdale residence, and March 5 at Albion, Beaver Library, West Point, Allison, Jackson, Jefferson, Dumont, Dumont Bristow Bennedette, Greene, Clarksville, Shell Rock. Des Moines presidential and state conventions are slated for April 16-17 and June 4-5.
Butler County swine producers are urged to enter a meat hog show at the Aplington Sale Barn on Saturday March 2. Entry is 2 hogs per farm with a $2 fee each hog. Weighing runs 9 to 11 a m. judging begins 12 30 p m with Bernard Ebbing of Bath Packing Co as judge. Two weight classes 190 210 and 211 230 pounds. Hogs outside weight may be penned and sold as grade and yield value only. Carcass cut out on one animal per producer. A follow up meeting is planned for March 13 in Allison Iowa.
