Monday's snow turned the landscape into a winter scene while a new town employee aids street clearing. The new governor may lift tax worries, and a taxpayer twist on the old fool and money adage circulates. Red skin mentions hint at a comeback as doctors stay busy and classrooms empty. Children miss extra vacation but face a return to the factory routine.
The Butler County Republican Committee plans a five dollar per plate fundraising dinner on March 5 1963 at the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison starting 6 30 p m. Featured speaker will be Iowa Lieutenant Governor W L Mooty along with State Senator Vernon H Kuhl and State Representative Charles Grassley plus other local representatives. Tickets available from precinct chairs and vice chairs.
Mrs. Howard Raisty, chairwoman, reports $302.71 raised to date in the current campaign. Last year by mid February, contributions were $264.70. The program funds health initiatives from the March of Dimes, including arthritis and birth defects, plus the new Salk Institute for Biological Studies project.
Butler County Farm Bureau Insurance Services agency manager Don Harris was named a winner in the Nite on the Town contest for January Health Insurance production. He and his wife will attend the Des Moines event on February 26 featuring a luncheon ice skating at the Ice Arena and a dinner dance at Hyperion Field Club.
A thirty minute Farm Seminar discusses weed control aimed at corn farmers. It airs Saturday February 23 on WMT Channel 2 at noon Channel 9 at 5 30 pm and KGLO Channel 3 at 6 pm. The program covers how weeds steal moisture nutrients and light reducing yields and notes rising interest in chemical weed control with 1963 expectations of more acres treated.

The fifth annual civil defense course starts Tuesday evening March 5 at 7 p.m. in Greene Community Schools. There is no charge and adults from Greene and nearby areas are invited to attend all seven two hour classes on consecutive Tuesday evenings. Instructors include Jerome McDermott Pete Timmer C E Burroughs and Vern Gard. Contact Burroughs or Gard for more information.
Word has been received by friends in Greene of the death of Lee McKinnon, 63, at his home in Los Angeles, California, about three weeks ago. Survivors include his wife, the former Winnifred Sullivan of Greene, and one son, Jerry.
Four youths and couples from Waterloo and Tama County were arrested in Rockwell by Cerro Gordo County deputies for breaking and entering. Leslie Dawson and Peggy Dawson, both 18 and 16, and Joseph Sichrea and Sherry Sichrea, both 18 and 16, were jailed with bonds set at 2500 for the two men, while the two girls were bound over to juvenile court. The group allegedly robbed Bohl Service Station Marble Rock, Dumont Laundromat, Skelly Service Station Aplington, Penning Cafe near Allison, and Klass Motors Greene, taking cash, tools, a change machine, cigarettes, and candy. A car description circulated to authorities. Butler County holds warrants on all four.
The Veterans of World War I will hold a meeting at the Veterans Club in Greene on Tuesday evening February 26 at 8 00 o clock.
The trailer home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Backer at Green Acres Mobile Village Cedar Falls was destroyed by fire on Saturday. Their son Billy aged 10 months was away at a neighbor's for supper when the blaze was found at 7 20 p.m. Firemen could not save the trailer or contents. Cause undetermined. Insurance covered the trailer but not personal belongings. Jerry, a student at The State College of Iowa Cedar Falls, lost about 200 dollars in school books.
Four meetings scheduled for all township committeemen on Wednesday March 6 at 1 30 p m at City Hall Allison. Purpose to make recommendations for the 1964 National ACP Program. Policy determining meeting with no attendance pay.
Bert Ramsdell of Velwein is hospitalized at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after a heart attack during the Velwein Charles City basketball game Thursday evening. Ramsdell, a former Greene resident, is listed in serious but stable condition.
Dr. Marion R. Hunt died February 12 at Osteopathic Hospital Kirksville Missouri after surgery. Born March 21 1905 Bancroft Iowa, he studied in Winnebago Minnesota and Kirksville College of Osteopathy. He married Edna Lewis in Mason City September 27 1930. Survivors include his wife. Funeral held Charles City Friday at 2 pm. Burial Highland Park Cemetery Kirksville.
Applications for the Selective Service College Qualification Test are now available to college students at the Local Board. The tests will be offered at multiple sites including State College of Iowa and Wartburg College with information obtainable from the local draft board.
Mrs. Merle Heckmen, who underwent surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City last week, is recuperating at home.
Temper Engineering Company plans to launch production soon in the former produce building on Second Street. The initial product will be an automatic electronic limit switch for loading bins that controls an elevator or auger and uses no more than 600 watts. The device can meter materials and is marketed by Belle Plaine based Tempel operations amid financing via the Industrial Developing Corporation of Greene, with shares selling at 100 dollars each.
Parents urged to bring their children for free photos to be printed in the Greene Recorder on March 6 at City Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. An expert photographer will shoot all youngsters with no obligation to buy. Appointments by calling Mrs. Ronald Lauber at 823-4512.
Freda Maass was taken to Cedar Valley Hospital on Tuesday afternoon for treatment.
Greene Ramblerettes beat Grundy Center 46 to 31 on the loser’s court to advance in the district tourney. Ruth Jepsen scored 13 points while guards Crosby Foster Allison Reed and Cheney helped limit Grundy Center to 9 in the final half. The team faces Riceville in Allison at 7:00 p.m. with potential semifinal Friday against Weissburg.
Mrs Glenn Ikenberry 71 died after an extended illness at home. Alma Barbara Schmid born in Charles City daughter of Joseph and Mary Schmid married Glenn Ikenberry March 21 1917 at Rockford. They farmed locally retired to Greene ten years ago. Surviving husband and son Kenneth at home. Funeral Thursday 2 PM First Presbyterian Church with Rev G F Butler. Interment West Side Cemetery Marble Rock. Williams Mortuary in charge.
Max V Exner Extension Music Specialist Iowa State University will address Butler County 4 H seniors Monday February 25 at 7 30 p m in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. He will teach current 4 H songs and show fun with music as the first of four meetings on Music and Recreation. The senior program is open to Butler County 4 Hers 16 by January 1 1963 or high school juniors.
Greene High School speech students will compete in the district contest at New Hampton on Saturday February 23. Participants include Jane Witwer Barbara Allison Joyce Crosby performing dramatic declamations. Bill Thompson Marie Marsh humorous declamations. Sue Miller an oration. Diane DeBerg poetry. Marlys Wegsner prose. The one act play A Cup of Tea by Katherine Mansfield will be presented with Barbara Allison Diane DeBerg Bill Thompson Tim Bramer Sara Green Barbara Ray in the cast. Coached by Mrs Pamilla Smith.
Walter Behnke was discharged from Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City last Wednesday and is now a patient at the Chatauqua Guest Home. He sustained a fractured left hip from a fall at his farm on February 5.
