The Greene Commercial Club sponsors a Customer Appreciation Day on Valentines Day February 14. A pancake sausage coffee and milk lunch will be cooked by Commercial Club chefs at the Greene Community Center with serving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The following high school students have been elected to the local National Honor Society: Ken Stock Rich Allison Brian Frevert Cindi Muhlenbruck Richard Tack Jayne Tinderholt Denise Brinkman Brenda McGee Jayne Meek Sheri Muhlenbruck Randy Smith Danita Soldwisch Diane Stanton. Initiation is Sunday Feb 17 in the high school cafeteria with a potluck dinner hosted by current NHS members and parents.

Butler County invites sealed proposals for construction work with bids due February 25 1974 at 10:30 AM in the Allison office. Proposals must use county forms with a solvent bank check as specified. Plans and specs are available at the County Auditor’s office. The Board reserves the right to reject all bids and to waive technicalities.
The Greene In Post Office will be closed all day Monday February eighteenth in observance of Washingtons birthday. No rural route delivery or counter service on that day. Mail will be received distributed and dispatched as on all other holidays.

Ronald Dralle seeks a Cubmaster for the local Cub Scout Pack. Interested volunteers are urged to contact him promptly for details and to join the committee efforts.
The Greene Woman's Club will present a program at 1 30 PM Tuesday February 19 in the community center basement. Roger Johnson will lead the program with assistance from his wife Mary. He teaches art at Greene High School and also teaches French in the high school and art in the elementary school.
Albert M Keifer 73 of Greene died at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Born December 2, 1900 in Floyd County to John and Etta Frascht Keifer, he is survived by his wife Goldie, a son Dean, a grandson, five brothers John of Erie Pennsylvania Andrew of Charles City Leo Lewis and George of Marble Rock, and a sister Mrs Cliff Reams of Nashua. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with burial in St Mary’s Cemetery. Rev Thomas Braak officiated. Reid’s Funeral Chapel arranged.
Ruth Eugenie Overholt 68 Greene died from burns suffered in a house fire on Feb 7 Born Sept 25, 1906 to Kendall Overholt and Mabel Gage Kendall Overholt survived by several cousins. The Greene Commercial Club announces its annual banquet on April 1 in the High School cafeteria. Speaker will be Jack Shelles longtime WHO radio broadcaster Nes Waines and now on the Iowa State University School of Journalism faculty.
Three firms secured bids to build the Butler County courthouse with total contracts of 927,176. Bamker Construction Company of Waverly won the general contract at 668,826, Fulton & Son of Des Moines received plumbing and heating at 171,700, and Maulsby Electric Company of Marshalltown won the electrical work at 86,650. Work to start soon with completion slated for October 1975, financed mainly from revenue sharing.
Des Moines hosts Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa meeting with about 2000 elevator directors and their spouses from over 300 local cooperatives. FGDA General Manager Charles W Hanson reports a record year with over 175 million bushels of corn and soybeans marketed and net earnings above 3 million dollars. Attendees include Kenneth Feldman Herb W Soldwisch Raymond Johnson Galen Lindell Eldon F Peterson Richard Jacob Frank Katcher Robert Kepple and Clarence Brinkman from Farmers Co-op Society Greene.
Ramblerettes begin sectional tournament at Ilis on Saturday February 16. Clarksville faces Janesville at 6:30 pm and Greene plays Allison Bastow at 8 pm. Winners meet Demer at 6:30 pm and Plainfield at 8 pm on Monday February 18, with losers playing consolation at 6:30 and winners advancing to the sectional finals at 8 pm.
The University of Northern Iowa extends a first aid course to Butler County if at least 15 enrollments occur. Classes run 11 Wednesdays starting February 12 at Allison Bastow School, offering 2 undergraduate credits. Fee is 68 dollars non degree or 70 dollars degree. The Senior Girl Scouts announce a community service paper drive on Saturday February 16 starting at 10 a.m. Papers only not magazines will be recycled at Cedar Falls. deliver in cardboard boxes or tied in bundles by the curb. Rural drop-off site planned later. save papers until further notice.
United Telephone of Iowa filed a January 19 appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court after Judge A V Hass upheld the Iowa Commerce Commission 1972 denial of a rate increase in the 1969 case. K A Larson cites potential impact on future service improvements and capital for review.
Nine Greene County High School students joined 39 area instrumentalists for the 4th annual Meistersinger Honor Band at Wartburg College January 26–27. Clinician was H Rubert Reynolds of the University of Wisconsin. Two bands performed Sunday.
Services for Mrs Henrietta Schmidt were held Saturday at 1:30 pm at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church with burial in Colfax Center Cemetery. Survivors include two sons Renko of Holland and Carl of Grundy Center, five daughters and many grandchildren.
The Allison City Council voted to restrict ambulance calls to the AB School District boundaries, designating that area as the territory the city ambulance will serve.
Greene High School dominated the Mason City event with a full sweep in three entries. The choral reading The Cat in the Hat and a Life With Father duet earned top marks, while the one act play drew high praise for directing and performances. Cast includes Joe Viers Pat Van Haren Bob Wezgand Chas Rutz Brian Frevert Rhonda Helm Joanne Senne Jan Schroeder Deb Karnhart Drenna Ebling Jayne Tind erholt Carolyn Dralle.
Rockford spoils Greene Ram bid 63 53 as Greene shoots 40 percent from the field and struggles at the free line. Bob Tumi Som leads Rockford with 25 points while Greene’s Pam Miller tops Greene with 24 points and 6 assists in a rough shooting night.
Greene edged by the No.2 ranked Sheffield Wildcats 54 to 53 as the Rams fought back from a first quarter deficit. Rich led with 20 points, Jim Van Eschen added 11, and contributions from Stark Frevert and Ponto helped during the late press but came up short in a near upset.
The Greene Ramblerettes dropped two close games last week. On Tuesday February 5 they lost to Sheffield 63 53 after leading 15 11 in the first quarter, and on Friday February 8 they were edged by Rockford 62 53, fading from a 31 23 halftime deficit.

The 1974 Floyd County Sheep Production meeting by the Extension Service will cover feeding and health of the ewe flock. It is scheduled for February 19 at the IPS Building in Charles City, starting at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
Representative David Stanley of Muscatine will speak at the Allison Public Library Community Room on Wednesday evening February 20 at 7:30 pm. The event, sponsored by the Butler County Republican Women, invites Butler County residents to meet the US Senate candidate seeking the Republican nomination.
The seventh grade team trailed 6 percent at halftime with one basket per forward Patti Hola Jod Ebling Kath Muhlenbruck. They surged in the second half with baskets from Path Holtz a free throw from Carol Wunsch and strong defense by Cath Stephenson Daria Ritter Tammi Menken Nancy Delpheid. Heide Groff finished with 7 seconds left to feed Diana Beek for the winning shot. Beek led with 18 points Kathy Nordmeyer added 10 Sandy Stanton 6. The junior highs end a solid season at 63-? with high school prospects ahead.
Berger Peterson and Berger Dougherty led District 3 with yields of 5246 and 5138 bushels per acre respectively. They received top honors at a banquet at Iowa State University along with other district and state winners. Willis Vander Linden of Leighton posted the state high with 5973 bushels per acre.
Rhonda Helm led the Greene County group as Ananda Helm a junior soprano joined 156 peers from 90 high schools across the region. The Meistersinger Honor Choir gathered at Wartburg College February 2–3 after selections from a 462-name list. The ensemble split into two choirs, rehearsed under directors, then performed in a public concert.
Greene high school frosh sophs defeated Nora Springs 57 to 47. Key contributions came from Bill Astor with 21 points and John Schwennen 11, while Nora Springs’ Brett Hays led with 15 and Greg Salter added 10 as the Rams tightened pressure late to seal the win. The halftime margin was narrow at 26-25 and the third quarter narrowed to 36 31 before the final surge.
