Mrs. Fred Starkweather of Sa Crescenta California died January 21. Funeral services were held in Glendale California on January 25. Survivors include her husband two daughters and four brothers in law Roy Glenn and Clarence Starkweather of Greene and George Starkweather of Pennsylvania. Mr and Mrs Fred Starkweather are former residents of Greene.
Dale Poppe receives notice that his son Dale Jr. has begun aviation electronics training in Jacksonville Florida. New address listed as Pvt D M Poppe 2379952 Barracks 570 Section 1 AEA MAD NATTC NAAS Jacksonville Florida 32213.
The high school publishes honor rolls for 7th through Senior classes with students named across grades. Notable acknowledgments include Terry Ackart Barbara Brinkman Steven Brinkman Brian Grice Vanda Heitland Robbin Helm Susan Holtz Jason Klassi Greg Landers Shari Litterer Diane Miller Rosanne Needham Mark Peyton Cathy Smith Nancy Tack Steven Wagner Kenneth Wunsch and many others.
Riceville edges Greene and St Ansgar for team title with 100 points as Greene is runner up at 63 and Nashua fourth. Key wrestlers include Witt and Steffen in 103 pounds and Foster and Edgar in 112 and 120 pounds with multiple semifinals and championship bouts and ongoing page 10 continuation.

Harold Williams 43 of 608% Kelly Street Charles City died early Monday in his apartment. Death appeared natural per Dr E E Schmiedel county medical examiner. He was a mortician who ran Williams Mortuary in Greene. Survived by three daughters Sue Debbie Theresa and two sons Gary Scott all of Waterloo and his parents Mr and Mrs Charles Williams Shell Rock. Services 1:30 P M Wednesday at Hage Funeral Home Charles City with Rev Ralph Ritter officiating. Burial Finchford. American Legion Greene in charge of graveside rites.
New resident Mr and Mrs Russell Folkers welcome a son born Thursday February 1 at Park Hospital Mason City weighing 8 pounds 8% ounces named Chad Franklin. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Arvid Lindell Bristow and Mrs Frank Folkers Cedar Falls.
Wartburg College in Waverly hosts Andre Watts in recital on Sunday February 11 at 8:00 p.m. in Neu mann Auditorium as part of the Artist Series. Tickets in advance from Dr A W Swensen Wartburg College, or at the door. Watts, 21, recently praised by Newsweek for a New York appearance with Bernstein’s Philharmonic performing Brahms Second Piano Concerto.
An adult education ceramics class at Greene Community School begins Tuesday evening February 13. Classes run seven weeks from 7:00 pm. Miss Wilda Hill, the art teacher, instructs. All interested adults should attend the first meeting.
The music departments present the annual midwinter concert tonight at 7:45 p.m. in the Greene High School auditorium. Features include the concert band mixed chorus and the Madrigal group.
Mrs Fern Kentzelman was taken to Floyd County Memorial Hospital on Sunday evening for observation and treatment.
Glenn Potter, 51, died suddenly February 1 at his Ventura California home after a heart attack. A former Greene resident, he is survived by his wife Doris Schrader of Charles City, brother Bill Potter of Greene, nephew Mike Potter of Minneapolis, and niece Mrs. Max Weyand of Greene. Funeral services were held Monday in Ventura. Bill Potter flew to attend.
Robert William Eaton of Hampton appeared in district court on Monday and pleaded guilty to embezzlement by public officer. He was sentenced to ten years at Anamosa but the sentence was suspended and he was fined 237 dollars. Eaton allegedly sold a steer at Butler County Farm and diverted the proceeds. Judge C. H. Wild presided.
Mr and Mrs John Snow of La Habra California announce the birth of their son Timothy John on Wednesday January 31. The infant weighed 8 pounds at birth. Grandparents are John Snow Sr Cassel Minnesota and Henry Kielman Clarksville. Great-grandmother Tillie Kielman Greene. Great grandparents Ray Hahn Bristow.
Greene Ramblers fell to St Ansgar 59 to 45 on Friday as Saint Ansgar shot 55 percent and held Siemens to 5 points. Wendell Stuntz led Greene with 13, Gary Johnson added 8, while St Ansgar’s Hannum led with 9. Greene fouled excessively, aiding Saint Ansgar’s lead. A next win over Rockford would secure the conference title.
Gabe and Hamilton Implement Company will host the annual John Deere Show Farming Frontiers 68 at the high school auditorium on Wednesday evening February 14 starting at 7 30 p m. Several films will be shown highlighting farming progress overseas and in the United States.
Vickie Sue Schipper, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harm Schipper, left Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo after treatment for flu complications. Mrs Duane Leavens returned to her Charles City home after treatment for flu-related complications at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.
North Iowa Area Community College invites interested community members to join an area orchestra. Ray Holtz, band director at Greene Community School, seeks string woodwind brass and percussion players to participate.
Mel Yerkes, president of the local Sportsman's Club, photographed thick foam on the Shell Rock River last Wednesday morning. He notes the river, already high and slow, needs a cleanup to restore fishing swimming and boating along its course and to safeguard health and conservation interests.
Army Private Lewis L. Melcher, 20, of Greene, completed an eight week field artillery basic course January 25 at Fort Sill Oklahoma. He trained in operating and maintaining 105 mm and 15 mm towed howitzers and received specialized instruction in the M 60 machine gun M 79 grenade launcher and the 3 6 inch rocket launcher.
The Men's City Bowling Tournament concluded Sunday at El-Bar Lanes with two classes by average. Team winners include Gary's Sinclair 3021 and First State Bank 2984. First State Bank also scratch winner 2683. Individual winners span handicap and scratch divisions across doubles and singles, listing scores for top performers such as Dick Reser 474 and Verle Earth 477, with all events scratch winner Sam Sneed at 1702.
