The Greene Independent basketball team, composed of former Greene High graduates, will host the Allison Independents Friday evening December 27 at the local gym. Tipoff is set for 7 30 p m.
A fire at the Howard H. Calease farm three miles southeast of Greene last Thursday morning completely destroyed the barn and its contents including hay straw milking equipment and tools. Mr. Calease had turned off the lights and sent livestock to pasture at 8 30 then saw flames as the hay mow door fell out. Greene Fire Company kept the blaze from spreading to other buildings and the barn was insured.
Butler County poultrymen schedule a January 7 7 30 p m gathering at the Extension Office in Allison to discuss local poultry problems and potential actions. Organizers include county extension director William Patton and attendees will include farmers producers hatcherymen and others in the poultry industry.
With closed seasons on major game in effect, Iowa hunters pivot to rabbit hunting. Officials say cotton tail population is the highest in years, and the season runs January 1 through January 31 with a daily bag limit of ten. Shooting hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Greene Public Library area gains a four room Youth Center above the library with dancing, games, ping pong, and a refreshment room. Open Friday 8 00 to 11 00 and New Year Eve 9 00 to 1 00. Open to Greene High School students and vacation access for college students. Sponsored by the Planning Board and City.
Fifteen Iowa cities earned award certificates for motor vehicle safety check projects conducted last May per a state safety department notice. Recipients include Greene Sioux City Oelwein Fort Dodge Newton Red Oak Grimes Marathon North English Ute Clarion Belmond Dows and Eagle Grove. The Safety Drive was run by the Greene Junior Chamber of Commerce and the program was sponsored by the National Safety Council Look Magazine and the Inter-Industry Highway Safety Committee.
The Boy Scout Court of Honor will meet Monday evening at 7:45 in Greene Community School auditorium. The event, postponed due to bad weather, will honor Robert Shultz, son of Mrs. Ruth Shultz, with the Eagle Award.
The Butler County Extension Council will hold its end of year meeting on December 30 at 1 30 p m at the Extension Office in Allison. Don Hagarty chairman says agenda includes regular business next year program duties and responsibilities and Extension Law setup A special presentation on agriculture adjustment in Iowa will be given by Bill Patton director
The Teeple family held a pre Christmas dinner at the Veterans Club with 32 attendees. Hosts were Lyle Witzel of Rudd and Clarence Teeple, with guests from Mason City Waterloo Charles City Clarksville and Clarksville families. A Christmas tree program and gift exchange completed the gathering.
H R Bud Morgan of the National Wildlife Federation in Washington called for wider farmer participation in soil bank conservation reserve practices that aid wildlife. Speaking in Des Moines he noted that among 40 000 acres under contract in 1957 less than 100 acres were wildlife oriented and urged tree and shrub plantings, sweet clover cover, patch plantings for food, and shallow water areas for waterfowl and fur bearing animals.
Pastor James Parks of the Church of the Brethren will travel to Germantown Pennsylvania for the inaugural Love Feast on New Year’s Day marking the 250th anniversary of the German Baptist Brethren. The revival of the Brethren faith originates in Schwarzau Germany 1708 and the church has historically faced persecution for anti state church and antiwar stances. As part of the celebration 950 heifers will be sent to Germany and overall 10,000 heifers have been donated by Americans to the needy worldwide. The effort aims to build goodwill and peace across communities including Germans Japanese and others deemed enemies.
More than 1000 farmers are expected for the 4th annual Farmer-Business-Industry Day in Charles City on January 16, 1958. Sponsored by the Charles City Chamber of Commerce, the program starts at 8:00 AM at the National Guard Armory with registration, then tours of local industries by rail or bus. Participants will visit plants and labs such as Oliver, Salsbury Laboratories, Walsh Manufacturing, Mayfield Laboratories, Sherman Nursery, Smith Manufacturing, Jensen Bros. Lockers, Workes Chemical, Iowa Public Service, Northwestern Bell, and Van-Web Equipment. Gifts and favors will be offered. Invitations have been mailed to 4000 farmers. acceptance cards are due by December 27, with limited seating noted from prior years.
January 3 Extension Family Living Lesson at 1 30 p m in the Farm Bureau Auditorium will cover decorating themes. Main emphasis on selecting room accessories lamps plants books cushions mirrors and pictures with a short color discussion and a twenty minute film titled Decorate For Living to conclude.
Yeoman Third Class Donald R. Potter arrived home Saturday to the home of his parents Mr and Mrs William Potter. He is stationed at Whiting Field Milton Florida in the personal department of the navy after basic training in San Diego and service overseas in the far eastern theater. Potter will return to his base January 6. Private J William Bartlett visits Greene from Camp Carson Colorado to see his wife and parents Mr and Mrs Harold Bartlett. He is in basic training at Camp Carson and will return New Year's Day. Private 2 Duane Tiemens and Private 2 Roger I Thomas, released from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, were in Greene Thursday afternoon. they had served in the National Guard Reserves.
A church Christmas program lists multiple student groups and performances on December 24 at 7 30 p m including organ preludes processions songs readings and choral recitations by grades from 1st to 8th with soloists and a closing prayer The Christmas Eve midnight mass 12 00 o clock is chanted by St Mary s Choir directed by Ruth Haugenberry followed by Christmas Day Mass at 8 30 with children choir directed by Sister Mary Gerard Confessions schedule is noted and a second Christmas celebration includes a playlet and film strip by various classes and staff with a closing by Bonnie Troje.
The First Presbyterian Church presents a Christmas program featuring Lauren Neymeyer and Cher yl Neymeyer in Welcome, Mrs How ard Raisty's class with Merry Christmas, and Larry Tack performing When I Have a Birthday in the downstairs department.
St Johns Lutheran Church Wilmar presents Messengers of Christmas on Christmas Eve at 7 00 featuring the Sunday School and Choir. The program includes processional The Hymns Are Telling Oh Bethlehem of Judah and God so Loved the World with recitations and solos by Wendell Debner Ann Voigts Dianne Brocka Linda Rover and others. Part two includes The Shepherds and a concluding Bring Joy to My Heart with more student performers and choirs.
Navy announces a recruiting officer will be at Greene Teeple Service Station every Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 12:00. It states former Navy personnel discharged within two years may reenlist at their discharge rate and may be moved to appropriate class A B or C schools. Reenlistees receive 30 days leave and advance travel allowances to their next duty station.
Mr and Mrs Clinton Mooberry and family of Floyd entertained the Dailey family at a pre Christmas dinner. Attending were Charles Dailey and Otto Schmidtke of Greene Charles Dailey and Bernard Dailey of Grafton Robert Dailey and family of Nora Springs Dale Clark and daughter of Mason City Robert Doudna and family of Osage Dale Maxson and family Clair Dailey and family of Allison Harold Swant of Marble Rock.
Mr Hee Kiwan Lee of Seoul Korea visits Greene for a year at the University of Michigan and is hosted by Mr and Mrs C G Starkweather during Christmas Day activities. The event features a multi part program with dialogues songs recitations and a nursing home scene concluding with carols and benediction.
Tuesday Night Rollers show high series by Butler County Abstract and Marshail Swift. Murphy Transportation, Greene Cafe, Marilyns Beauty Shop post varied records with scores around 30s. Wednesday Night Leagues report Bristow Elevator and Willeys Clothing high series while Rollers note top games by C Jenssen, D Kingery and L Meek.
The Knapp family held a pre Christmas dinner at Mr. and Mrs Willard Marsh home on Sunday followed by a gift exchange. Guests included Mr. and Mrs Francis Knapp and family Mr and Mrs Dean Ott and family and Mr and Mrs Fred Knapp of Greene Mr and Mrs William Caruth and family of Iowa Falls and Roger Staudt of Marble.
Mrs B G Brunsma entertained the Eight Bridge Club at her home last Thursday afternoon for the club’s annual Christmas Party. A dessert luncheon was served and a gift exchange took place. Guest and high prize winner Mrs Lewis Majewski, with second high prize to Mrs Loren McRoberts.
The Bennezette Meat Producers 4-H Club met at Greg Boom’s home on Monday night December 16 with 10 members and 2 leaders present. They completed quiz sheets on Plant Food and Weed Identification, Greg Boom demonstrated seed oat treatment, and a gift exchange was held. The next meeting will be at Husene Wilke’s home on January 20.
