A playful rumor circulates about two deer hunters ending up with a billy and nanny goat instead of deer due to fog. The note wishes readers a Merry Christmas from the staff if they don’t meet in person.
Mrs Florian Katz was discharged Monday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City after a checkup and minor surgery conducted Friday.
Greene places second for Ramblers as Nashua wins the event at Calmar with 74 points. Rambler wrestlers finish with multiple wins and placements across weight classes including Trees, Noel, and Cheney reaching semifinals and championships, earning points from first rounds to finals.
The Greene High School music departments present their annual pre Christmas program this Wednesday evening December 29 at 7 45 in the high school auditorium. Featured groups include the new 1965 stage band the 76 piece high school concert band the mixed chorus and glee club directed by Ray Holtz and Marilyn Bundy.
Butler County Extension Service to hold a meeting on using the beef and grain futures market for farm business. Marvin Skadberg and William Uhrig of Iowa State University will present in Allison next month to answer questions. The session is Tuesday January 11, 1966 at 1 36 p.m. in the Farms Bureau Auditorium.
New resident Mr and Mrs Kenneth Feldman welcomed a son Tracy Dean born December 14 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital weighing 8 pounds 1 ounce. He has two sisters Connie nine and Jill seven and a brother Scott four at home. Grandparents are Fred and Feldman of Nashua and Tom and Smith of Nashua.
Clarence T. Kretzschmar was presented with a good driving award for 23 consecutive years without an accident as rural carrier at the Greene Post Office. Oscar Bartels received an award for seven years of accident free driving as rural carrier at Greene. The awards were presented December 20 by Postmaster Robert J. Curtis.
Pvt Donald Litterer son of Mr and Mrs Louis Litterer is en route from Fort Leonard Wood Missouri to Korea after enlisting last July and receiving training there.
Jerry H. Voigts a Bristow native and University of Iowa senior in engineering received the John Deere Foundry Award. The stipend supports a foundry career interest and strong academics. He is the grandson of Mrs. Henry Wiebke of Greene.
Mrs. Frank Berbohm 84 died in her sleep December 15 at Greene. Emma Evelena Walter born March 2, 1881 near Shell Rock. Married April 12, 1899. farmed in Clarksville then Greene. Survivors include daughter Evelyn Woygle and grandchildren. Funeral at St Peters Lutheran with Rev. Devies. burial Finchford Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mrs John Gersema went home Tuesday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital after undergoing minor surgery on Monday.
David W. Bone son of Mr and Mrs Harrison Bone has earned a High School Honor Scholarship for Wartburg College in Waverly for the freshman year He is an Eagle Scout Order of the Arrow and has aided Cub Scouts He is a Greene Community High School senior and National Honor Society member
The Ramblerettes won their seventh straight, beating Hampton 44 to 40 as Greene led with 24 points including 10 free throws and 7 rebounds. Flora Stubbe had 10 steals, Ann Rottler added 24 points, and Hampton’s guards were harried, with foul trouble affecting both teams. Hampton’s B squad lost 37 to 30 as Crandall and Connelly led for the hosts.
The U S Bureau of Public Roads approved a public hearing held at Aizen on September 16 for a project to improve Town 47 in Allison and Town 3 from Allicon to Town 122 junction. The Iowa 47 project targets 1968 at an estimate of 95300 dollars while Iowa 2 is set for right of way in 1966 and construction in 1967 costing about 1 405 900 dollars.
Butler County Selective Service announces three men answered the draft call on December. Dennis R. Prange of Bristow son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Prange Donald J Abbas of Ackley son of Mr and Mrs Arend B Abbas and Eerl D Wiegman of Dumont son of Leonard Wiegmann. Induction call for January 3 is ten men. forty men underwent armed forces physical examinations in December.
Gordon L Hansen son of Mr and Mrs Harley Hansen of Plainfield is serving with the Marines in Viet Nam. He enlisted August 1964 trained at San Diego and Camp Pendleton, went to Okinawa August and to Viet Nam in November. In a letter he described the local situation near Da Nang with rice paddies and a 6 30 curfew for villages. He is PFC Gordon L Hansen 2090850 USMC 1st Battalion 12th Marines California.
Michael T. Brensma, stationed in the Air Force at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls Oregon, is spending a furlough at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs B G Brunsma and family.
Visiting Corothy and Helen O'Thomas have stayed in Pomona since June. They arrived Sunday to spend holidays with their parents Mr and Mrs Ira Thomas. They are joined by Lenore Coleman of Homer Alaska and plan to return to the Alaska Christian Home at Homer in June.
The Greece Commercial Club sponsors a drawing next Friday December 24 for over 300 in free merchandise prizes. To enter, residents register at local stores and tickets are placed in one container before the drawing. Prizes are on display at Wunschen Plumbing. Previous turkey drawings provided numerous winners from Greene with store hours through Thursday and Friday closing at 5 PM.
DuBois was taken by ambulance from St Josephs Abrey Hospital in Mason City after treatment for a heart condition. Mrs William Astor returned home Saturday from St Josephs Mercy Hospital where she underwent observation and surgery.
Daryl Barnett returned from a knee injury to spark Greene to a 73 65 home win over St Ansgar. The victory creates a three way race in the conference with one loss for Greene, St Ansgar, and Rockford. Barnett scored 28 as Fischer added 10 of 17 from the floor, and McRoberts iced the game with late free throws.
Edward Madison Hunter born August 17 1874 in Madrid Iowa died December 8 at his home near Boone aged 91 years 3 months 2 days. He married Delphine Vision Wombsaker July 3 1900 in Wyoming and eight children were born. The couple lived in Wyoming Madrid Floyd County and Ben Kingery farm near Greene before retiring to an acreage near Boone. Funeral services were held at Sundberg Funeral Home Madrid on December 10 with burial in Mt Hope Cemetery. He leaves wife Delphine eight children 37 grandchildren 46 great grandchildren and two sisters.
Reverend Wayne Gjerde along with Jim Mc Lennan and Vern Reiner display deer they shot in Narik Town during a four day season. The catch includes one buck and two does as part of a Northeast Iowa bagging event.
Junior Chamber of Commerce members judged a seasonal contest with seven entries in the rovelry and five in the religious division. First in religious went to Rev and Mrs George Knutson of West Dow Street, with Edna Hunt second at 411 North 5th Street and Harold Heeren third on a farm southwest of Greene. In novelty, Harlan Helm and partners won first from 311 North Fourth Street, second to Nieho at North Fourth Street, and third to Jerry Stemens of 402 North Fourth Street. Prizes were $20, $10 and $5 respectively for first through third.
The Iowa law this year requires taxpayers to record the school district name where they live on the Iowa Tax Return. This information supports education budgeting, linking district ability to pay with property valuations and personal income. While no penalties exist, citizens are urged to fill the blank before submitting the state income tax report.
Dean Barnett of Greene has been awarded a scholarship for the winter and spring quarters at Town State University in Ames. He is in the college of veterinary medicine.
