The Greene library notes a $20 donation from the G H S Student Council toward a microfilm reader. Community groups are invited to donate as the library accepts contributions for the new equipment. Also featured is Sam Levenson’s In One Era and Out the Other, a humorous memoir of his frugal upbringing and family life.
Joe Needham, a Greene High School junior, joined Methodist youth and leaders on a Washington trip with stops at Gettysburg and the Lincoln Memorial. He toured the White House, Capitol, Pentagon, Smithsonian, and Arlington, photographed Kennedy graves, and saw a Bonanza actor filming. He will serve as a Des Moines House Page in January while continuing school.
Gary Debner of Greene earned his fourth letter in as many years as a Buena Vista College football player. The longtime letterman adds to his record with this season’s performance, highlighting consistency and commitment on the team.
Greene Rams surrender lead in final three matches losing 36 24 to Nora Springs last Friday. Barry Delp earned the only Ram fall in 2 34, with forfeit wins for Craig Schafer and Tom Leavens. Tom Leavens 3 0 and Mike Wihlin 3 0 remain undefeated in duals while five varsity grapplers have yet to win a dual. Coach Munger notes lack of varsity experience hinders progress and praises early starters.
Five shopping days remain until Christmas and Greene stores will stay open evenings this week until 8 30 p.m. for convenience. A free children’s movie airs Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Community Center, followed by Santa handing out candy. Stores promote seasonal deals. check each store for details.
Ethel Jewell and Sadie Davis received life membership pins at the United Methodist Women general meeting on December 6 at the church. A $25 gift in honor of each woman was given to missions. A Christmas program featured Louise Frevert and Ethel Jewell as Mary and Elizabeth, with reflections on their births. A potluck dinner followed. A Jan 5 meeting at Way Station invites board members and others to attend.
Marine Patrick Dougherty son of M and M Clark Dougherty of Dougherty Indiana was commissioned a second lieutenant at the Marine Corps Development and Education Command. He is a 1971 graduate of Mankato State College Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science and joined the Marine Corps in August 1973.
Westmar College junior Jerry Shultz of Greene lettered in football for the Eagles in 1973. The team had 43 letter winners and finished 3rd in the Tri-State Conference with a 3 5 record tied with Sioux Falls and Bethel. Shultz, son of M&M Jack Shultz Greene, earned his third letter and was named to the 1973 All-Conference team. he will be a co captain for 1974.
The couple were honored on their 55th anniversary with a dinner hosted by their children Eldred Franke Marshalltown Bill Ingle Clarksville and Roy Franke Charles City at Carver's Waverly.
A Dec 16 potluck celebrated M M D G Arends of Ackley on their 60th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in attendance. Relatives from Grinnell, Wellsburg, Mason City, Cedar Rapids, Ames, Marble Rock joined afternoon callers and well wishes.
Lance Ryan pinned 1:14. Andy Nelson was pinned by Rod Sletten in 44 seconds. Greene Rams travel to Ackley-Geneva Friday. Ackley is No 1 in this Iowa section per Predicament ranking. Munger says tough opponent will strengthen and build the team.
Greene Society members and relatives hosted and visited at Clarksville, Gilbertville, Waverly, Waterloo, Mason City, and surrounding towns. M&M Richard Laube of Charles City announce a son Trinity Lee born Wednesday December 6 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces. He joins brothers Timmy six and Tommy four. grandparents Herman Laube and Alvin Klunder. great grandparents William Steere Sr Melusine Klunder Clarksville and Fred Vetter Nashua. M&M Jerry Donson of Decorah announce a son Keith Michael born December 6 weighing 7 pounds. grandparents Ray Brinkman and Joseph F. Donlon. great grandfather Fred Brinkman Clarksville.
The Bennedette Farmers Daughters held their December meeting and Christmas party on December 10 at the home of leader Mrs Heeren and Lois. A gift exchange followed the business session. Materials were handed out for next year's lessons. After adjournment Christmas cookies candies punch and cocoa were served.
The Sixty Plus Club hosted its yearly Christmas gathering on Tuesday featuring a potluck dinner and a gift exchange, bringing members together in a festive community event.
The Greene post office will be closed on Tuesday December 25 1973 in observance of Christmas Day. Nursing Home News reports residents at Mathers Nursing Home were remembered with favors treats oranges cookies corsages and visits from family and volunteers. There will be no counter or run during the week.
The Recorder announces earlier deadlines due to Christmas. Advertising and news must arrive by Monday morning. Office drop offers Monday noon as the final deadline. Greene papers will not be distributed until Thursday morning.
The Greene High School Chorus will be featured over KWWL AM 1330 Waterloo singing Christmas music at 7 15 pm Christmas Eve December 24 and at 8 30 am Christmas Day December 25.
The Nativity Story will be presented as a living nativity at the Church of the Brethren in Greene this Saturday evening December 22 with scenes at 7 7 20 and 7 40 in the church yard.
Word was received of the death of John D Beal of Crystal Bay Nevada. Beal was born and raised in the Greene area and is survived by his wife a brother Ben of India California and a sister Faith of Greene. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Beal.
Marble Rock fell to Greene 33 28 with Phil Wahlgren 12 Jim Anderson 6 and Dave Needham 6 leading scoring while Wahlgren topped rebounds with 10. Marble Rock lost 57 23 to Allison Bristow as Wahlgren again led with 18 points and 12 boards. In overtime Greene beat Marble Rock 22 20 with Jeff Eimers 14 and Pat Nikolas 8 leading scorers. Allison Bristow defeated 34 25 with Fimners 23 Nikolas 13 and Randall Sanders 10. Matt Bigler Brian Nettleton Darrell Schroeder and John Williams stood out on defense.
Army Staff Sergeant Donald D. Sharp of Marble Rock IA participated with U S and Allied troops in Reforger V in Germany from October 10 to 16. The exercise examined reception, equipping and integration of arriving units rather than rapid deployment. Sharp serves as a technical control supervisor in the 26th Signal Battalion Headquarters Company in Heilbronn, Germany, and his wife Sun Cha accompanied him.
Earl Kiehn 49 of Denver former Greene resident died December 7 at Veterans Hospital Denver funeral and burial held December 10 in Boulder Colorado Burial followed services at Boulder location and Denver death notice notes.

The Way Station will keep its fall and winter hours during Christmas vacation with Friday evenings opening at 8 30 and Saturdays at 7 30. S O S sessions run 9 00 to 9 45 Saturdays with local students and Wartburg College LYE teams assisting. The venue above Greene Library offers a Christian atmosphere for youth with games visits light refreshments singing and prayer led by adult advisors.
Greene Ramblerettes improve to 5–1 with an 85–57 home win over Nora Springs. Linda Grumley scores a career high 38 and Pam Miller adds 30 as Greene dominates with 52 percent shooting and 33 turnovers forced. Team holds 3–0 conference mark and heads to Hampton next.
Sunday afternoon visitors included M and M De Wood of Le Roy Minnesota. Mrs Paul Burroughs drove her father Fred Butzlaff on a ride Sunday afternoon.

Nora Springs Eagles defeated Greene Rams 77 to 61 as a full court press forced 15 first half turnovers and built a 40 to 29 halftime lead. Stark led Greene with 16 points, Van Eschen added 15, while Eagles shot 35 percent to Greene’s 38.8.
The Greene High School junior girls were guests of Chapter CC PEO Sisterhood at a Christmas Tea on December 3 at the Presbyterian Church. Phyllis Rattler welcomed them and spoke of PEO efforts to fund women’s education through the International Peace Scholarship Fund and Educational Fund Loans. PEO’s pride Cottey College in Nevada Missouri, a two year liberal arts college. Slides on Cottey highlighted its opportunities. Refreshments and holiday desserts were served by Sadie Davis, Patricia Wesand, and Ruth Dukelow. punch and coffee by Ann Graven and Hester McWilliams.
Navy Hull Maintenance Technician Second Class Daniel F Ballard, husband of Brenda J Marsh of Greene Route 1, returns to homeport aboard the USS John F Kennedy after a seven month Mediterranean to Arctic deployment. Port visits included Edinburgh Scotland. A 1966 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School Charles City, he attended North Iowa Community College Mason City and joined the Navy in July 1968. Library closed Mon Dec 24.
Gary Debner a Buena Vista College senior from Greene receives the Lena T Julius Scholarship for 1973 74 based on character academic ability and need. Selection is by the college committee on financial aid and the benefactor Mrs Julius a Storm Lake resident established the endowment.
