The Iowa State Highway Commission in Ames releases a 1966 to 1970 road program including relocating Highway 14 to the north edge of Greene and building a new Shell Rock river bridge. Road and bridge work to begin in 1966 and finish in 1967, plus paving Highway 3 from Allison to Waverly starting in 1966.
Mrs. Frank Mehmen underwent major surgery at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City Monday morning. Delmar Foster was brought to the same hospital Sunday night and also underwent major surgery Monday morning.
The Greene Commercial Club will meet this Wednesday at 7 30 PM in City Hall for the final session of the year. Members are urged to attend as Christmas promotions will be discussed.
Ninety people contributed $175 to the Butler County Soil Conservation District Cooperators Club within six days of including membership cards with the November newsletter. The club promotes soil and water conservation and funds postage, contests, demonstrations, and tours. The newsletter mailing list now has 780 names and is open to any interested person regardless of contribution.
The freshmen and sophomore Ramblerettes defeated Nashua 64 28 on Wednesday. Ann Rottler scored 31 for Greene, with Cheryl Neu meyer 15, Katie Astor 12, and others contributing. Nashua's Towers and Mead led with 10 each as guards and players listed. Next Monday Greene hosts the next games with both girls and boys schedules noted.
The North Central Iowa proposal envisions a merged area community college with Mason City Junior College as a key partner. The steering committee outlines steps to form a governing board, secure administration, and fund operations, aiming for a fall 1966 start with state aid and outside support to bridge tax and timing gaps.
The Commercial Club will hold a special merchandise drawing on Friday December 24 at 4:00 p m on Main Street as appreciation for the year. Tickets are saved from the turkey drawings on Saturdays. Last week’s turkey winners include many local residents and families. Final turkey drawings are set for December 11 and 18 with twenty seven turkeys each night at 8:30 p m. Free movie matinees for all community children are on December 11 and 18 at 2:00 p m at Bush School Auditorium. Santa will visit Greene on the two Saturdays after the movies to hand out candy. Local stores will stay open each evening December 17 through December 23.
E. M. Hunter, 91, of Boone died in his sleep at home this morning. A former Greene resident he was the father of Mrs. Orval Kingery of Greene. Funeral services are pending.
Ernest Botterbrodt of Greene won $25 in the Operation Santa Claus drawing at First State Bank. The drawing was held last Saturday and botterbrodt will appear on KGLO TV next Saturday December 18 to receive the money. The program starts around 4 45 p.m. after the pro football game with a bank representative.
Butter-Nut Coffee strips and coupons must be deposited in containers at Dralles EB and W Food Market and Morey’s Food Market by Saturday December 11. Welfare chairman Mrs Louis Ramker of the American Legion Auxiliary says the coupons fund Christmas gifts for orphans and children of disabled veterans.
Greene Jaycees remind Greene and surrounding area that the deadline is near for entering the Christmas decoration contest. Home and yard entries in two classes religious or novelty are invited with prizes of 20 and 19 dollars. To enter send Greene Jaycees Pax 484 or call 8293 4512 or 823 4256 by December 14.
Ralph Marsh of Greene led the Butler County Master Corn Growers Contest with a 131.73 bushels per acre on a ten acre plot measured, weight scaled, and moisture adjusted. Twenty of twenty four entries met requirements with several others over 120 bushels per acre including Bruce Marsh 128.19 and Tom Melichar 127.35. multiple growers from Bristow, Parkersburg, Shell Rock, and Allison followed with 120 to 124 bushels per acre.
Bertha Mildred Ohlsen 83 died Tuesday at Clark Nursing Home after months as a patient. Born October 7, 1882, she is survived by son Jack White of Mason City, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services to be held Thursday December 9 at 2:00 pm at Reid's Funeral Chapel Greene with Rev G F Butler. Burial in Arthur Tilinots.
A dozen northeastern communities form ranks to back Wartburg College’s 1.25 million dollar campaign for a 700 thousand dollar capital project. Wartburg alumnus James Roach names local chairmen in Plainfield Allison Clarksville Denver Greene Parkersburg and Charles City with a December 8 meeting at 6 30 pm in Waverly to align efforts.
Aaron Jewell will have surgery on December 14 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. The procedural details are not disclosed.
Story Hour at Greene Public Library will be discontinued for the three remaining Saturdays in December. It will resume on Saturday January 8 from 1 15 to 2 PM. Mrs Robert Fischer is the story lady.
Greene boys suffered their first defeat of the season as Manly shot 70 percent in the first quarter and 48.5 percent overall to win 82 81. Ramblers led late in the third but fouls and late rallies altered the outcome. Barth and Fischer top Greene with 20 points each while Gabe led in rebounds with 14. Ramblers also saw two players foul out, Willert and McRoberts. Ramberettes beat Manly 71 44 behind Ann Rottler with 28 and Peg Willey with 20 as Greene's girls extended their conference record to five straight wins.
Steven Schrage of Bristow shown his 4-H Shorthorn baby beef at the International Livestock Expo in Chicago placing first in two junior yearling classes and helping the Iowa group win the state competition. A West Point Junior Farmer 4-H member with six years in 4-H, he also topped Butler County Fair baby beef in 1963.
The Cub Scouts will hold their Christmas pack meeting on Wednesday evening December 15 at 7:30 at the elementary school. A 50 cent sift exchange will be available for all scouts and their families. Each family should bring one dozen cookies for lunch. Leftover cookies will go to the rest home. All scouts and relatives are invited.
A group of friends, relatives and neighbors gathered at Siegfred Dralle’s farm last Thursday to shell beans and pick corn. Ten pickers, wagons, tractors and an elevator were used, with gas provided by the Farmers Elevator.
