Greene urges the community to address overcrowded classrooms and inadequate facilities to restore high school education to an acceptable standard. He argues for careful planning, shared effort, and ongoing support to meet students’ needs and fulfill obligations to local youth.
The Greene Commercial Club sponsors free children’s movie showings at the high school auditorium on consecutive Saturdays, December 9 and 16, at 2:30 p.m. Santa Claus will distribute candy after the films. A dress turkey drawing is set for 8:30 p.m. on December 16, with a merchandise drawing planned for December 23.
Clarence Kretzschmar is a patient under observation at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Mrs Merlin Parks was admitted on Sunday to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where she is receiving treatment.
The University of Iowa Hospitals seeks gifts for about 500 patients this Christmas. Donations should be sent to the Christmas Committee at Iowa City with no food or gift wrap. Items requested include toys, hosiery, stationery, books, scarves, and gloves. cash gifts are welcome to buy for shortfalls.
Glenn Epley Ressler 68 died suddenly Wednesday evening November 29 at his Greene home. Born February 19 1899 in Shell Rock he married Irene Sinnott February 14 1920 and farmed until retirement. Survived by wife son Glenn Merlin Ressler daughter Regina Stauffer eight grandchildren three sisters. funeral at St Marys Catholic Church December 2 officiated by Rev Joseph Murphy with burial in St Marys Cemetery.
Honey Rose a Tennessee Walking Horse owned by M. J. Crosby of Wishram Washington placed fourth in the mare class and sixth in the amateur open at the Grand National Livestock Exposition at the Cow Palace San Francisco from October 27 to November 5. Crosby a former Greene resident says the 5 year old mare has never been out of the money in two seasons of showing and has been trained by Crosby.
Promoted to Specialist fifth class Mace H. Bammann son of Mr and Mrs Ellis Bammann writes of six inches of snow on the ground at Fort Meade Maryland where his unit Co A 75th Engineer Battalion aids snow removal. Address listed as Specialist Mace H Bammann Co A 75th Eng Bn Fort Meade Maryland 20755.
Greene Community School administrators and teachers will speak to community organizations about the building program with board approval. A free administrator and, if possible, a teacher will attend any group meeting to cover needs and explain plans. Contact Mr. J. Tatum to arrange.
Greene boys beat Nashua 60 to 43 as Tom Needham 13 and David Fischer 17 led scoring. Nashua boys guard Dan Hench had 17. Ramblerettes trailed 63 to 49 after a tight game, with Mary Stauffer 12 and Susan Maxson 11 top scorers for Greene, while Nashua’s finish edged them ahead.
Two breakins in Greene during early hours of Thursday November 30 netted $72.00 in thefts from Albrecht Feed Mill and Starkweather Garage. Safes beaten open. Gabe and Hamilton Implement damaged but not entered. McRoberts Implement entered without theft. Back doors pried open with a bar. Butler County Sheriff's Office investigates.
Mrs. Alma Heckman died at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City around 12 30 AM Monday. Funeral services will be Thursday at 3 00 PM at First Methodist Church Greene with Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Thirty-five girls from the North Town Girl Scout Council attended a vocational exploration meeting at Clarke College Dubuque on Saturday. The girls rode a chartered bus from Greene at 6:00 a.m. and returned at 7:45 p.m. Little Cloud Council Dubuque hosted the event with delegates from four Iowa Councils. Sessions covered medicine business education social work and cosmetology led by field specialists. Troop 269 seniors included Ann Allison Snowden McBurney Becky Bellows Ant Hansen Jane McRoberts Mary Rottler Val Rutz and Susie Astor.
Nashua hosts the Ramblers and wins 32 to 12 as Doug Trees Duane Leavens Philip Schafer and George Nixt remain undefeated with decisions. Individual results show several decisive bouts for Nashua and a few close Rambler wins in reserves before they travel to Nora Springs and host Clear Lake in upcoming matches.
The Office of Economic Opportunity district seeks to form a Greene Senior Citizens Club for men and women. Interested parties should contact Mrs Geneveive Tiemens at the Outreach office in Greene or Pon J Christian in Mason City. A meeting place and civic support from local clubs are needed.
Iowa State University presents its 12th annual Christmas Festival of music at 3 and 8 p.m. Sunday in the Armory at Ames. Nearly 800 ISU musicians perform under the theme Jubilate with a large mural by Allen Jonas. Martha Stuntz will sing with the Iowa State Singers.
Guy Olson and Richard Eichacker attended a statewide Guidance Coordinator meeting in Cedar Rapids on November 27. The event, hosted by Area X as part of a Title II Federal Project, included a library and film center tour and a Counselor In-Service Meeting themed The Counselor As An Agent In Environmental Change. Dr Don ald Blocker of the University of Minnesota was the featured speaker.
Mrs Wayne Feldman underwent emergency surgery Saturday evening at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Mrs Kenneth Sutten 52 died suddenly of a heart attack in Grinnell on Thursday November 23 Survivors include husband one son Kenneth Sutten Greene one daughter Mrs Dean Douglas Grinnell and seven grandchildren Funeral services were at Smith Funeral Home Grinnell and burial was in Gilman cemetery
Mr and Mrs Wayne Thomason announce their son Terry has been promoted to E5 while stationed at Wackerheim Germany with the 81st Artillery since August 1966. He plans to return to the United States in February 1968.
The USUA Consumer Marketing Service proposes revised hog grade standards based on backfat depth carcass length and muscling. Many U S No 1 hogs would move to No 2 and No 2 to No 3 under the new rules. The Harlem Globetrotters bring their 42nd season to Mason City on December 20 at the 4000 seat Mason City High gym for an eight o clock holiday game against the New York Nationals. J C Gipson and clown Bob Showboat Hall lead the international unit. Tickets are on sale at First National Bank and Carlton Stewart Music.
Sheryl Roberts, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hauser, had ear surgery at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Mason City Monday and returned home Tuesday. The item notes girls and boys teams opening conference play with wins and a trip to Nora Springs Friday.
Last week’s bowling results feature Nordmeyer Construction and Clay Pipe Inn leading through several leagues with high scores by Sam Sneed Elmer Stock and Carroll Schroeder. The Ramblers opened conference play with a 62 46 win over Nashua as Siemens Stuntz and Eimers led scoring and rebounds.

Leo Landers shot a buck on the last day of bow season. The deer weighed about 200 pounds and was felled on his farmland west of Greene.
