Supt. and Mrs. V. J. Tatum and Carol spent last week on a vacation in Duluth and the upper peninsula visiting Copper Harbor Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac Island. On returning Sunday they found the bathroom washer blew from the nut and water flooded the first floor and basement, causing extensive flooring damage and likely furniture harm. The rug and piano effects are still undetermined. Mr. Tatum advised turning off water when away on vacation.

The 1960 Butler Soil Conservation Banquet will be held at the Boyd Building in Shell Rock on Thursday September 1 at 6 30 p m. Donald Harris chairs the event featuring John Rhodes Le Grand as speaker. Queens of Conservation Miss Sandra Weichers Aplington and Miss Sharon Cruse Clarksville.
Mr and Mrs Francis Constien announce the birth of a son named David Allen on Wednesday August 17 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed eight pounds ten ounces.
The first meeting of the young farmer class will be held Tuesday September 6 at 8 00 p m in Greene High School All young farmers between 18 and 30 are invited This is the fourth year of the class as part of Greene Community School vocational agriculture program.
Rev A E Mitchell of the Tribes of Viet Nam will headline the Powersville Alliance Church Missionary Convention from September 1 to 4 with 8 pm services and a Sunday closing service at 11:00 am. He will present slides costumes and curios nightly. Pastor Rev R M Strecker invites the public.
Mr and Mrs Harry Ruffridge and daughters Irma and Ruth Donlon left Friday for Des Moines to attend the State Fair and began their return trip to Long Beach California after six weeks visiting relatives and friends in and around Greene.
The Mid States Racing Association held the season finale at Cedar Rapids on Sunday. Greene attendees included Glade Heichel and families of Kenneth Stewart and Wayne Thomason. Heichel earned two seconds two thirds and a fourth in Sundays events and was runner up in Class A Hydro high points. Thomason placed second in both Class A and Class B Hydro. The association has members from five midwest states and were in town on August 7.
An 1954 Pontiac driven by Darlene Maxine Smith 15 of Parkersburg rammed a county maintainer stopped at a stop sign near Allison at 5 PM on Thursday Aug 25 causing about 200.60 dollars in damage. Passenger Donna Rust 18 of Dubuque was cited for permitting an unauthorized driver and Darlene Smith faced a summons for no driver license. Sheriff Pete Boomgarden issued the summons.
Committal services for Danny Jay Landers the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Landers were held at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene on Tuesday at 10:00 am. Rev. G I Butler officiated the service at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City where the infant was stillborn. Survivors include the parents Carl and family Pooley Dwight Pooley grandparents all of Greene with Williams Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Miss Janice Krueger formerly of Marble Rock and daughter of Mrs Ruby Johnson of Greene will graduate among 37 seniors from Allen Memorial School of Nursing Waterloo. She will receive a diploma at the September 2 commencement in East High School Auditorium Waterloo and has accepted a position at the Mental Health Institute Independence.
Thomas Franklin Clemas an 18 year old from Wadena was brought from West Union by Sheriff Pete Boomegarden. He faced larceny charges for stealing gas and oil from Shell Rock Lime Co south of Shell Rock on August 20 and pleaded guilty in Knight's Court Greene. He was fined 50 dollars or 15 days, failed to pay, and remains jailed in Allison.
The Greene Sportsman's Club hosts a Friday fish fry at the local high school auditorium with served walleyes fries and sides. Tickets are eat-all-you-can. a prize drawing with hundreds of dollars in articles is planned, plus door prizes. Tickets available from club secretary Claire Curtis.
Supt. W. J. Tatum announced that buses will pick up students on the west side of the Shell Rock river in Greene starting with the new school term Tuesday September 6. The routes will mirror last year until the elementary building is finished.

Mr and Mrs Martin Heist and children Janet Louise Greg and Dan arrived in Greene for a few days visit with Mrs Heist's relatives including uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Berton Shultz and her brothers Martin and Hugo Senne. The Heists, missionaries from New Guinea for seven years, will then travel to Madison Wisconsin where Mr Heist will study at the University of Wisconsin this year.

Bruce Marsh stationed on Treasure Island San Francisco California is on a 10 day leave visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh.
Gerry A Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Gust Johnson of Greene and a 1951 Greene High School graduate completed a Business Administration program at Gates College Waterloo with a 3.41 GPA and earned honors. He works for Rath Packing Company of Waterloo. Other area grads include Robert Lawrence Drakle Nashua and Larry Lee Skinner Clarksville among 52 graduates.
Mrs. Ralph Russell, 82, of La Verne California, died August 26 in a Baldwin Park rest home. Born January 24 1878 south of Greene, she married Ralph Russell in Greene in 1899. They observed their 60th anniversary in 1959. Survivors include six children Galen Chicago Wilbur San Francisco Virgil Pasadena Ivan Florida Alice Bell Max West Covina. husband preceded her in death. Funeral services were held in Pomona California on August 23.
Larry Paplow underwent surgery Tuesday morning at St Marys hospital in Rochester Minnesota.
Albert Mannke remains a patient at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City where he is receiving ongoing medical care.
Mayor Kelly's court lists Gerald Dean Schrage of Allison fined 25 dollars and 4 dollars costs for disturbing the peace with an auto. J P Knight's court notes Thoms Franklin Clemas of Wadena, Minnesota for larceny with 15 days in Butler County jail. Russell Dean Folkers of Greene faces defective brakes 10 dollar fine and 4 dollar costs, and improper passing 50 dollar fine and 4 dollar costs.
Mr and Mrs August Grendler and son Clare attended the 25th anniversary celebration of Rev Francis N Miller priesthood ordination. Solemn High Mass and silver jubilee dinner held at Mallard Iowa on Sunday August 28. Rex Shier is Mrs Grendler’s cousin.
The Butler County Democratic Central Committee will meet at Skinners Cafe in Clarksville on Thursday evening September 1. Public attendance encouraged and committee business to be discussed.
Mrs Williams hosts her twin sister and Colvin Olsen with two sons at Here House. They are residents of Portland Oregon and departed for home on Sunday.
The Butler County Barracks Number 1405 and its auxiliary will hold a regular meeting at the American Legion Hall in Aplington on Friday September 9 at 8 00 PM. A luncheon and social hour follow the meeting.
