The Greene Sportsman's Club hosts a Friday night fish fry at the local high school auditorium on September 1. Meals start at 6 30 with walleyes French fries vegetables ros ice cream and beverages. Tickets are eat all you can with seconds available and a prize drawing offering hundreds of dollars in articles. Proceeds fund Shell Rock River stocking projects with northern pike and walleyes assisted by club labor.

Mrs Paul Stubbe 87 died Saturday evening at home between Dumont and Aredale after a heart attack. Survived by four sons George Ben Paul Herman and five daughters Katie Ike Clinton Ralph and C L Myers plus grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at 2 at Wesleyan Methodist Church east of Aredale burial in Dumont Cemetery.
Labor Day activities at Round Grove Golf and Country Club include a 12:00 noon pot luck dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lewison, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Senne, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cheney. Lena Hecker 83 died Thursday night in a La Porte City rest home after ten days with leukemia Burial was in a Postville cemetery She spent many years teaching and was principal and normal training supervisor at Greene High School in the 1920s She is survived by sister Agnes Graham and nephew Myron Baish both of La Porte City
Iowa’s State Conservation Commission set duck and goose seasons amid drought reducing nesting success. Duck season runs Oct 31 to Nov 19 1961 daily from sunrise to sunset except opening day noon. Goose season runs Oct 7 to Dec 5 1961 with same daily hours and bag limits.
Three men were seriously burned Monday morning when an oil tank exploded at an asphalt hot mix plant in Marble Rock. Foreman Norman Henke and laborer Roger Bosemann, both 22, were admitted to University Hospital Iowa City in serious condition, while another worker, David Koch, 22, was listed in fair condition at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. All are employees of W Hodgman and Sons Inc of Fairmont, Minnesota, the Floyd Jeet north of Marble Rock project contractor. The blast occurred as workers heated the tank to run the oil used to mix asphalt for paving roads. Marble Rock Fire Department fought the blaze.
Work crews are required to complete the athletic field project with backstops, dugouts, and painting still to do. Weeds and trees along fence lines must be cleared. The next session is Tuesday evening Sept 5, inviting softball players and fathers of football, Babe Ruth, and Little Leaguers to assist after supper with lights on after dark.
Frank A. Pagles 84 died Wednesday afternoon at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after being moved there the day before. Born August 4 1877 in New Mulford Illinois he lived many years with brother Arthur Pagles West of Greene. Surviving brothers Arthur Greene and Will Glidden. parents four brothers and two sisters preceded him. Funeral services Saturday at 2 PM Reid Hamilton Funeral Chapel Greene Rev Clayton Becker officiating. Burial Rose Hall Cemetery.
Four girls from Greene and Allison return from the First Triennial Luther League Convention of The American Lutheran Church in Miami Beach Florida August 15 20 with 14000 attendees. Speakers included Martin Luther King and other church and civic leaders. The delegation visited Miss Universe and collected autographs. The event is described as the largest Lutheran youth convention ever held.

The first young farmer class will be held on September 11, at 8:00 pm.
Linda Jackson daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Jackson was crowned queen at War Day on Saturday. Runners up were Sally Townsley Donna Reed Mary Lou Squires and Susan Roose. Twenty five girls sponsored by individual businesses sought the Miss Greene title. Winners of prizes included Marcy Miller Lynn Thies bicycles Joel Gehhusen Jerry Schoenfeld tricycles Russell Landers and Jimmy O Brien skates Teddy Grain a wagon Marilyn Barnett Valerie Stark Weather Elaine Ipsen Mary Jo Reams Rhonda Landers three lines of bowling.
