Iowa State Tax Commission data show Greene lagging behind Allison in quarter ending March 31 1961 sales tax collections. The piece urges local merchants to share advertising efforts and embrace friendly competition to boost community progress and retail activity in Greene and Allison.
The Fifty Ninth Commencement at Hamilton College Mason City Iowa was held August 20 1961 at Wesley Methodist Church. Emily J MacLeod daughter of Dr and Mrs H G MacLeod Greene IA earned the Stenographic Course diploma. Donald R Potter son of Mr and Mrs William Potter Floyd Mitchell Farm Bureau Service Company Osage IA completed Executive Accounting. Shirley M Schroeder daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Truex Bristow IA finished Junior Machines and works for Butler County Social Welfare Allison IA. Frank C Nikolas son of Mr and Mrs H Nikolas Marble Rock IA completed Junior Accounting and now employed by Ringer Park Rapids Company Park Rapids MN.
A Social Security Administration representative will visit Allison at the Court House on September 1 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon to assist with filing applications for federal old age survivors and disability insurance benefits and to issue social security numbers and employer identification numbers. Mr and Mrs Charles Warner and their two children from Beachbot tom West Virginia spent last week visiting in the home of Mr and Mrs Max Wegand and their children.
Butler County reports July purchases of U S savings bonds totaling $49,435, lifting seven month county total to $782,595 which is 69 percent of the 1961 quota. Iowa state seven month total for Series E and H bonds exceeds $92,465,856 with July sales above $10 million.
Nine Butler County 4-H clubs nominate candidates for president vice president secretary treasurer and historian at the August 30 rally night. Darrell Williams Robert Hansen Ronald Wartema Mike Jewell Dennis Schrage Bill Cordes Darwin Freese Mike Schultz Gary Fecht head the slate as four will be elected. Rally night includes the annual business meeting and best senior and junior demonstration reviews. All 4-H members and families are invited to Farm Bureau Auditorium at 8:00 p.m.
Mr and Mrs A F Lindell Sr return home from a vacation spent at the home of Mrs Lindell s son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Herbert Anderson at Rock Falls Illinois They also visited relatives in Michigan and Mr and Mrs R A Groos at Hastings Michigan and traveled home via Canada
The Greater Iowa Corporation announced the incorporation of a wholly owned subsidiary, Greater Iowa Loan Corporation, to engage in commercial, agricultural, industrial, home and developmental lending with state headquarters on Main Street in Ames. Executive VP Glenn A. Marsden will move to Ames by September 1. The board includes W N Shellenbarger, Richard E. Williams, Roscoe Marsden, Walter W. Goeppinger, Floyd Andre, R Edward Baur, Lucius W. Fitch, and Charles Spies.
Mr and Mrs George Latch of Renwick were guests of Mr and Mrs M K Sperry over the week end. On Sunday they visited Niagara Cave at Harmony Minnesota the Billy Clocks and Dvorak Museum in Spillville and the Little Brown Church at Nashua.
Mr. and Mrs. George Shultz and their sons vacationed a few days in the Black Hills. Jean and Carol remained with their grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Azerski during their absence.
Mrs Carmen Barnett 69 died Thursday at her farm home after a long illness. Born February 1 1892 in Pennselaer Indiana she married Fred Barnett October 8 1918 at Trenton Missouri. Surviving are husband two sons Max Britt and Robert Greene a daughter Ruth Perisho Story City one brother Frank McDonald New York City and nine grandchildren. Funeral at Williams Mortuary 2 pm Monday Rev John Jones Church of Christ officiated burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
Raymond J. Riley, 29, of Waterloo, was returned from Waterloo to Allison and pleaded guilty in Justice of Peace Court to petty larceny. He admitted taking 33 dollars from the Aplington Produce cash box on August 14 and was fined 25 dollars plus 16 dollars costs. after payment he was returned to the Waterloo Sheriff's office, where he is wanted for larger thefts in the Waterloo area.
The Red Cross swimming classes concluded with an average of 73 youngsters taking part. Mrs. Jim Crale and Mr. Gerald Eimers led the program and thanked chaperones and bus drivers, including Jim Menken who managed the buses. Certificates will be awarded after school begins.
Leonard Litterer aided the community project at the William Kline farm recently and provided support to neighbors during the good neighborhood initiative.
Approximately 150 students attended the KWMT Hop sponsored by the Youth Center on Saturday evening. Roy Chase in charge of the event called it one of the best record hops he had conducted this year. Chaperones included Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fischer Mr. and Mrs. Howard Clapham and Bob Shultz.
Larry Raymond seventeen was apprehended by Marvin Barth and Marshals in Greene early Friday for stealing a tank of gas from Tyden farms the night of August. He was held for the juvenile parole officer at Butler County Jail in Allison and released to the patrol officer Friday afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Martin Heist and family were guests of honor at a family picnic at Round Grove Golf and Country Club Saturday evening. The Heist family will stay in Berton Shultz’s home this week before sailing to New Guinea September 1 to resume missionary work for six years. Attendees included Bernard Fuerst and family Villa Park Illinois Jim Watson and sons Charles City Billy Senne New Hartford Berton Shultz Max Heidenwirth and sons Hugo Senne and Stanley and Martin Senne and daughters Greene.
Shipfitter third class Rollin Ray will return to Norfolk Virginia after twenty days leave with his parents Mr and Mrs Wilson Ray. He is stationed aboard the U S S Orion a submarine tender.
Jason L. Byers 54 of West Des Moines died at Mercy Hospital Des Moines after a five month illness from lung cancer. Survivors include wife Ruth two sons William and Bernie in Navy Long Beach California three daughters Mrs Keith Menken Cedar Falls Mrs William in West Des Moines and Cindy Jo at home three sisters and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at 1:00 PM at the McLain Funeral Home Des Moines with burial in Kirksville.
New residents Mr and Mrs Leo Fish of Plainfield welcome daughter Julie Lynne born Wednesday August 16 at Cedar Valley Hospital Chirles City weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. Mr and Mrs 3 M Dolan of Bettendorf celebrate a son David Edward born Thursday August 11 weighing 9 pounds 81 ounces. Mr and Mrs Donald Shultz announce a son Douglas Bryan born August 2 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce. Grandparents listed Otto Landers and Galen Shultz Sr.
Mrs. Roy Henline and her husband spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs William Grusy in Secor Illinois.
Mr Jaco Stratman of Hon olulu Hawaii will arrive in Greene the latter part of this week for a visit with friends. He is a former commercial instructor in Greene High School and will stay at Walter Hildebrand home. A picnic dinner is planned for Sunday August 27 at 12 15 pm at Perrin Park. If rain it will be in Presbyterian Church basement. Attendees should bring table service food and drink for their family. Several former teachers will be there to visit with him.
A meeting of all young farmers interested in joining the young farmer class will be held Monday, August 28 at 8 p.m. in the Greene Community School. The class has been part of the Vocational Agriculture program for four years. All interested farmers are invited to attend.
The graduating class of Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing in Waterloo will hold commencement exercises Friday evening September 1 at 8:00 in the East Waterloo High School Auditorium. Thirty graduates include Coral Deines daughter of Rev. and Mrs I J Deines. Deines begins work September 5 at Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital.
The Butler SCD hosts its fifth annual Fall Field Day and Plowing Match on Sept 16 afternoon at Lester Schrage Farm, 41 miles NW of Allison. Contour and Jewel land matches start 1:00 p.m. Practice plowing allowed. water shaping demo and corn fertilizer test plots observed. State contour winner advances to Marshalltown Sept 22. no state land contest this year. Entry deadline Monday Sept 11 with contact at the District Soil Conservation Office in Allison.
Fines were imposed in several district cases. J P Moffett’s court Eldengart Erna Doering of Mason City faced dis obeying a traffic signal with a 5 dollar fine and 4 dollars costs. P Knight’s Court Larry Dean Harper of Hampton was fined 10 dollars for speeding plus 4 dollars costs. Howard Hansen of Greene paid 10 dollars for obscene language and 11 dollars costs. Hugh Henry Saul of Evansdale was fined 5 dollars for stop sign violation with 4 dollars costs.
Greene Community Schools will begin the 1961-62 school year on Tuesday September 5 with a full day. Lunch prices rise to 23 cents for grades 1-5 and 30 cents for grades 6-12, the first increase in eight years. Book rentals stay at 4.00 for K-6 and 4.50 for 7-12, with payments set August 28-31. Bus routes, classroom changes, and faculty availability are noted, with French and Latin dropped due to staffing.
Martyn Wunsch sustained a broken nose last Wednesday after a motor fell from a ledge and struck him in the face. He was treated at the scene by responders and declined further medical details.
The committee in charge seeks volunteers to install backstops and screen for the baseball diamond, move the scoreboard, and place posts and wire around the football field. Work is set for next Monday and interested helpers should arrive early to ensure timely completion.

Mr and Mrs Wilford Griner and Mr and Mrs Harley Hansen of Plainfield returned home Sunday evening from a vacation trip. They visited Colorado Springs Estes Park and attended graduation exercises at Greeley Teachers College Marilyn Hansen among 750 graduates returned home with them.
Mrs. Howard Allison of Des Moines and her two sons visit parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Allison as Howard attends Army Reserve Training, spending two weeks in their homes.
Greene merchants designate Saturday August 26 as 49er Day with a queen crown and prizes for youths. Queen candidate must be 16 to 20. winner receives a $25 government bond. Parade on Main Street at 3 90 p.m. and 4900 pennies dropped at 2 p.m. for children under 16 to collect. Prizes include bicycles wagons and skates. sponsors include local firms and the Greene Commercial Club.
Greene Cub Scout Pack 26 will meet in the Grade School Auditorium Wednesday evening August 30 at 7 30 PM All interested persons are urged to attend because boys will be assigned to dens at this meeting Plans for future activities will be announced
A stag supper will be held at the Country Club on Tuesday evening August 29. Serving committee members include Gene Nettleton Lowell Maxson Bob Curtis Dr William Andrews Dean Uhlenhopp and Clair Curtis.
