In Hospital Sharon Osier daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Osier was admitted to University Hospital in Iowa City on Monday afternoon where she is under observation and treatment. Her address is Ward C-32.
Herman Faber of Parkersburg grilled his turkey to perfection and won the top honor in the turkey division of the Iowa Cook Out King Contest at the Iowa State Fair on August 21. He received a case of rolled turkey roasts as the prize. The event is sponsored annually by the Iowa Farm Bureau, Farm Bureau Insurance Services and FS Services, Inc.
New resident couple Mr and Mrs Donald Litterer welcomed a daughter born Saturday August 17 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Kathryn Karen weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces and has a brother Kenneth. Grandparents are Lee Po Hak of Inchon Korea and Mr and Mrs Louis Litterer of Greene.
Thaine R. Hogue, a work unit conservationist for Butler Soil Conservation District, attended the Soil Conservation Society of America meeting in Athens Georgia August 19 20 and 21. The program theme was Improving Mans Environment and addressed air and water pollution soil and natural resources conservation. Discussions focused on slowing rural to urban migration and improving city problems. Hogue toured watershed projects in Georgia and exchanged ideas with farm and forestry planners. About 1000 attendees from across the United States and Canada participated.
Butler county officials may attend a special program in Garner on September 11 or West Union on September 12 to learn about investing idle local government funds. Gary Frahm says the Iowa State University specialists will cover law mechanics results and how to work with banks to create a sound investment program.
The Selective Service office of Allison will close from Thursday August 29 through Monday September 2 for vacation. The office will reopen at usual hours on September 3.
Airman Michael J. Dougherty son of Mr and Mrs James J Dougherty of Dougherty Iowa completed basic training at Lackland AFB Texas He will attend the Air Force Technical Training Center at Keesler AFB Mississippi for specialized schooling as a communications electronics specialist He is a 1967 graduate of Rockwell Swaledale High School Rockwell Iowa The entry notes his affiliation with the Air Force and subsequent training assignment.
Alan Starkweather 13 son of Mr and Mrs Clair Starkweather broke a bone in his right foot while playing football at home on Monday evening. The leg will be in a cast for six weeks and he will use crutches for two weeks.
Iowa bond sales rise in July with Butler County reaching 32 percent of its 1968 quota. July sales total 41,135 boosting seven month Butler tally to 261,361. Statewide seven month total 52,826,274 or 48 percent of goal. Scott County leads at 87 percent, Linn 72, Black Hawk 70, Des Moines 69.
Dennis L Viers sergeant and son of Mr and Mrs Gene Viers earned the Bronze Star in Phan Thiet Vietnam for bravery during the Tet Offensive. Guarding a 40 foot tower amid an ammo dump explosion, he and fellow G I s stayed on duty. He served since 1968 with the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Air Cavalry and 506th Infantry, and awaits early January discharge after a partially completed Vietnam tour.
Kenneth Vernon Mann aged 18 of Iowa Falls pleaded guilty to larceny of a motor vehicle in district court at Allison. The charged vehicle theft stemmed from an incident in Parkersburg on June 22, 1968. Judge C H Wild sentenced Mann to one year in the Men's Reformatory at Anamosa.
Mrs George W Irene Hinkle 53 died August 17 at a Tacoma hospital after a long illness. Born January 12 1943 in Rockford Minnesota she leaves her husband a son a daughter four brothers two sisters and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were held August 20 at Mountain View Funeral Home Tacoma with Mr Irven Schlief and Mrs Lawrence Drakle attending from Minneapolis by jet and returning Friday.
Martha 8. McCamphbell daughter of Clyde Stuntz and Thomas J. Nixt son of Mrs. Henry Nixt earned degrees at Iowa State University commencement in Ames. McCamphbell received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education for Women while Nixt earned a Master of Science in Animal Science at ceremonies held Friday August 23.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brinkman and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Brinkman returned Thursday from a 19 day trip to California. James Bruce and Cindy visited Aldo Sartori and daughters in Monterey Park. They stayed with Dr. and Mrs. Walter Byerly in Fresno and Mr. and Mrs. George Stober in Salt Lake City. They toured the Mormon Temple Square Las Vegas Hoover Dam Marineland Disneyland Sequoia Yosemite and Lake Tahoe.
Eleanor Pooley leaves this area for Mesa Arizona after a two month visit with her parents Mr and Mrs R J Pooley and other relatives. She is librarian at Mesa Community College this year.
Residents served by North Iowa Area Community College at Mason City are urged to vote on a mill tax levy in conjunction with the regular school board elections. If approved, a mill levy would span five years to acquire land erect buildings or purchase equipment with over 100000 needed in the immediate year to supply laboratories and vocational programs. The levy aims to maintain accreditation and support program expansion constrained by current facilities.
Colonel Howard Miller praised 400 uniformed Iowa Highway Patrol members for daily life saving acts. Recent incidents include river rescues with mouth to mouth resuscitation, intercepting fast cars to aid ill or wounded children, and a blood transfusion refusal to the governor's award. Dennis Tack has returned home from Floyd County Memorial Hospital after injuries from a fall while painting a barn at the Stanley Bonzer farm. He will be confined at home for three weeks.

Mr and Mrs William Eliason announce the birth of a son on August 21 in Charles City. The 10 pound 4 ounce baby is named Jeffrey Lee and welcomed home by sister Julie. Grandparents are Clarence Eliasen and Gertrude Eggena of Greene. great grandparents are William Eliasen of Greene and Clara Hayungs of Garner.
Mr and Mrs Jim Marshall and family and Miss Ruby Mosher returned home Saturday night from a two weeks vacation through the western states visiting Coronado Hollywood San Diego Disneyland and the Wax Museum They called on Dick Marshall and family Jim Osier and family in Duarte navy buddies in Ventura and Muskogee Oklahoma and toured the Grand Canyon Painted Desert and Petrified Forest en route home
Mrs Harry Merfeld entered the hospital in Charles City on Wednesday August 21 and underwent surgery on Thursday. She returned home on Friday.
Nassau native Ranee Hagarty daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Hagarty leaves Sunday to resume teaching in Nassau Bahamas. Gail Gabriel from Seattle meets Ranee in Chicago and the two fly to the Bahamas. Hagarty teaches fifth grade at St. Josephs Catholic School.
Mr and Mrs Raymond West and children Darlyl Shelley Kathy Becky and Mark took an eight day vacation to Wisconsin visiting Milwaukee Shell Lake the Wisconsin Dells and Lake Pepin. On the way home Monday evening they visited Mr and Mrs Harold Schlangen at Lime Springs.
