Mr and Mrs Jim Knapp welcome a son born Thursday August 8 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces. The newborn named Thomas James has a sister Jill at home and grandparents Mr and Mrs Harry Merfeld and Mr and Mrs Francis Knapp of Greene.
The Butler County induction call lists four men for August: Edward A. Paulsen of Plainfield volunteers. Steven T. Munson of Parkersburg enlists in the U S Army for two years. George Hemmen, formerly Aplington now Waverly, enlists for four years. and David A. Dreyer of Parkersburg enlists for three years. William B. Waters, formerly Dumont now Castle Rock Colorado, transferred to the local board for induction. A September call also requests two men.
Mr and Mrs Larry Mason of Marble Rock announce the birth of a son on Wednesday August 7 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. The newborn weighed 9 pounds and is named Collin Franklin He is welcomed by grandparents Herman Mason Marble Rock and Mrs Siegfred Dralle Greene.
The First Presbyterian Church will dedicate additional pew Bibles in memory of Dr. H. G. MacLeod during the Sunday worship service on August 18 at 10 00. Dr. MacLeod long served this congregation and was an elder.
Gary Frahm Batler County Ex tension Director reminds 4 H members entries for Cattle Congress close September 1. Competition in all events in the 4 H club department limit to members aged 12 on January 1 and under 19 on January 1. Rambler head coach William Garner announces start of practice on Tuesday August 20 at 7 30 am Equipment distribution set for Saturday August 17 at 7 30 pm All high school boys interested in joining the Rambler squad should be at the gym Saturday evening if possible Those unable to attend Saturday should call Mr Garner to receive equipment after the first practice session next Tuesday
Mr and Mrs Tom Cronin of Nashua announce the birth of a daughter on Monday August 12 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital New Hampton. Jane Elizabeth weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and is welcomed by two year old sister Julie. Grandparents are Geo Merfeld of Greene and Mr and Mrs John Cronin of Nashua.
Six year old Gregory Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Veron Johnson, underwent a tonsillectomy Wednesday morning August 7 at St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Waverly and returned home the next day.
At Round Grove and Country Club the ladies city golf tournament crowned Mrs George Sneed club champion with the low 18 hole score. Susan Maxson finished second as Jean Ganske skipped defenses to play in Minnesota. First flight winners were Mrs Bernard Huber and Mrs Martin Senne. second flight went to Mrs John Backer with Mrs Ralph Marsh second. A luncheon and bridge followed for forty members.
The Men's City Bowling Association will meet this evening at 8:00 at El-Bar Lanes. Regular league meetings will follow. All men bowlers are urged to attend.
Dick Jeninghussen of Allison Iowa has 34 years as a volunteer observer for the Weather Bureau now 89 and still reporting. He will receive the John Campanius Holm Award from the Environmental Science Services Administration for outstanding meteorological observation. The award honors long serving volunteers. ESSA notes over 12,000 volunteers nationwide.
Clyde and Fern Stuntz won the state husband and wife championship at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Sixty couples competed over Saturday and Sunday with an 81-38 for 119 to claim first. Ey and Hazel Scheppele placed second at 82-39 for 121, and M. and Ferne Barnes took third at 84-40 for 124. Lower flight winners were Bill and Penny Bigler, Tom and Flo Tiernan, Mr and Mrs Ben Hooks, and Gordon and Gail Schafer with final scores listed.
Greene Fire Department responded to Klassi Motors on Wednesday morning August 7 to extinguish a fire in a new Ford car. The blaze started when an employee attempted to start the vehicle and gasoline sprayed over the engine.
In Charles City Fern Kentzelman was taken by ambulance to Floyd County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Terri Barnett was admitted there on Thursday last week for treatment at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.
A group of thirty nine members from Farmer's Incorporated Cooperative Society departed by chartered bus on Monday for a four day tour to plants across Missouri and Kansas. The itinerary included visits to a demonstration farm in Trimble Missouri, Farmland Industries School in Kansas City, Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, Nitrogen Plant in Lawrence, Co op Refinery in Coffeyville, Ammonium Phosphate Plant in Joplin, headquarters building in Kansas City Kansas, and a service station in North Kansas City with return to Greene planned Thursday evening.
Harry Green underwent surgery on Tuesday August 6 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City. The operation followed a routine medical assessment and was performed without complications, with Green stable and recovering in the hospital ward.
Art Lovrien publicity chairman of Butler County Farm Bureau announces tickets for the annual Rural-Urban Banquet are on sale through board members or the Farm Bureau office. Banquet planned for the Farm Bureau auditorium on September 18 with wives invited. featured speaker Paul Seidenburg of Farm Bureau Insurance Co. Des Moines. Entertainment by a Hillbilly group.
John Henry Meek 81 died August 8 in a Charles City hospital. Born December 18 1886 in Wisconsin to Theodore and Elizabeth Meek he farmed in Greene before retiring. Survived by wife Mary three sons and six daughters, three brothers, thirty two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral August 12 at St Marys Catholic Greene Rev Murphy officiating. Burial in St Marys Cemetery Greene. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mr and Mrs John J Henning of Greene announce the birth of a daughter weighing seven pounds at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The baby has been named Waneda Jean. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Ivan Clikeman and Mr and Mrs John H Henning of Greene.
Twenty six fourth grade students from Greene Elementary earned spots in the beginner band on a summer trial plan. Trials occurred during the final weeks of school with tests and tryouts. Fall lessons resume as these students begin their first band experience with sections for flutes clarinets saxophones cornets trombones and drums.
Chris William Brinkman, infant son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Brinkman, was baptized during the morning worship service at St Peter's Lutheran Church. Rev Paul Metzger officiated with Marjorie and David Brinkman as sponsors.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard J. Hardy of Dallas Texas visited in the homes of Mrs J B Hardy in Greene and Richard Burt in Algona. They traveled to Cedar Rapids for minor surgery, then to Lake McBride Solon area Bret Dishong home before returning to Dallas. Mrs Hardy is a nurse with Dr Edward R Richardson orthopedist and Mr Hardy works for Collins Radio in Dallas.
Area 4-H youths from Greene Marble Rock and nearby towns dominated the Floyd County Achievement Show near Charles City. Steve Hildebrand captured purple ribbons for his Brown Swiss heifer calf two-year-old heifer and cow, plus blue for dairy showmanship. Winners in baby beef included Bill Vorhes, Madonna Dolan, Dennis Gabe, Jane Dolan, Scott Pyatt, Scott Hildebrand, Edward Lauterbach, and others across Hereford, Angus, Shorthorn, and Charolais classes with multiple weights and connections to Greene and Marble Rock. Carcass, showmanship, fat lamb, pig, and poultry listings followed with numerous blue, red, and purple awards among a large slate of names from the same area.
In Germany Army Pvt. Fredrick Brunner of Marble Rock has been assigned to the 6th Battalion 10th Artillery Battery B a VII Corps unit in Southern Germany. The 20 year old is the son of Mr and Mrs Nick Brunner of Rural Route 1 Marble Rock and serves as cannoneer. He entered the Army in 1968.
The women’s City Bowling Association will meet at El-Bar Lanes on Tuesday evening August 20 at 7 30 PM. The Tuesday Night Rollers and Tuesday Night Alley Cat Leagues will follow the city association meeting. All women bowlers are urged to attend. The Tuesday night leagues begin bowling August 27.
Greene Community Schools will open the 1968 69 year with a full day of classes on Wednesday August 28 Labor Day is Monday September 2. New faculty include C R Alexander Patricia Cervenka George Roberts James Rothe Mary Van Loh and Kay Nordmeyer. Bus routes and lunch prices are listed and parents urged to register and pay book rental at the high and elementary offices.
The Greene Commercial Club will meet this evening at 7 30 at City Hall. All members urged to attend.
State Conservation Commission outlines hunting and trapping seasons across the state for 1968 and 1969. Squirrel dates run Sept 14 to Dec 31 with a bay limit six and possession limit twelve. Rabbits from Sept 14, 1968 to Feb 16, 1969 with hours 6 am to 6 pm and bag limit ten. Raccoon hunting only from Oct 19, 1968 to Feb 28, 1969 with no bag limit. Quail Oct 26, 1968 to Jan 31, 1969 with hours 8 am to 4:30 pm and bag eight. Deer bow season Sept 28 to Nov 28 with one deer bag. shotgun/muzzle loaders Dec 7–9 with one deer. Trapping Mink and Muskrat Nov 9 to Dec 31 1968. Beaver Dec 14 1968 to Feb 28 1969. Other species open or with later limits pending at August meeting.
