Library installs microfilm reader in Greene Public Library
Gerald Dolan of Micro Technology Cedar Rapids installed a microfilm reader at Greene Public Library and trained Wbeary staff and the library board. Fred J. Hawker donated Greene newspapers from 1876 to 1901 for public viewing. The device, bought with funds from contributors and library funds, allows viewing one half page at a time.

New Greene Policeman Hires Cedar Falls Man Larry Capel
Larry Capel of Cedar Falls is hired as Greene’s new fulltime police officer joining two others to extend day and night coverage. Capel, a 25-year Navy veteran, previously served with Navy Shore Patrol and Police Departments in Long Beach and Pensacola and worked as a guard at Copeland Florida prison. He plans to settle in Greene, is lodging in a hotel, and invites townspeople to meet him in the street or police car. Final local standings and beef referendum details follow in this issue.

Waterloo mother rescues boys after ditch collapse
Mrs. Terry Thomason of Waterloo saved two boys aged 4 and 5 when a ditch caved in near their home during sewer project work. She moved heavy rubble to reach Jason Christensen and Chad Dickman whom were treated and released from Scholtz Memorial Hospital. Thomason is daughter of Eugene Ewald of Marble Rock and daughter-in-law of the late Wayne Thomason.

Bone honors graduate Harrison Bone earns physics degree
Greene native Harrison Bone received a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy with honors from the University of Iowa on July 26 marking completion of undergraduate studies. He earned honors for participation in the Up of I Honors Program which supports scholastic research and advanced study for top students. The program admits freshmen in the top 10 percent who must sustain at least a B average to remain in it.

The 1975 Floyd County 4-H Council was announced at the Best of Show event on July 29. Hammel Family Reunion Held At Perrin Park
The family of the late Carmine Hammel held a reunion at Perrin Park on Sunday August 4. About 70 descendants attended including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The oldest attendee was Mrs. Carl Merfield of Rockwell Iowa. Students join fall beginners band after summer program

Greene High School Band Earns National Recognition
The Greene Community high school band earned national recognition from the National Educational Scholarship Foundation of Northbrook Illinois for musical proficiency. Dr William Revelli of the University of Michigan Bands praised the group and recommended Greene as a possible candidate for the Fourth Annual International Youth Music Festival in Vienna Austria in July 1973. A Screening Board will consider audition tapes for final invitation. The school awaits further material and hopes to represent North America at the event.

At Round Grove Golf Course on July 27 the championship flight winner was Dick Stuntz with 102. Dave Feerds from Mason City took second after a sudden death playoff.
