Wayne Starkweather son of Cecil Starkweather enrolled at Luther College for the second summer session in Decorah Iowa. Director D W Qualley notes no guest instructors besides regular Luther faculty with two visitors Johanna Hemmingson Waldorf College and Paul D Strand Decorah attorney. Classes offered across disciplines. Students may earn up to six credits.
The Women’s City Golf Tournament advances to the semifinal round with finals due by next week. Competitors include Mrs Clyde Stuniz, Mrs James Drakle, Mrs Oscar Bartels, and Mrs Galen Marizahn. The consolation bracket lists Mrs Harry Green, Mrs Dawn Cheney, Sally Bartels, and Mrs Paul Hamilton.
At the State University of Iowa summer commencement 677 graduates will receive degrees tonight at 7 30 in the University Fieldhouse. President Virgil M Hancock will confer the degrees and deliver the charge, with about half earning advanced degrees. Students from 82 Iowa counties, 32 other states, the District of Columbia and 12 foreign countries are represented. Foreign students come from Canada Egypt Ethiopia Formosa Hawaii India Iraq Japan Mexico Pakistan Philippine Islands and Turkey. University station WSUI will broadcast the event at 7 15 p m. with Orville Hitchcock on the scene. WSUI radiates at 910 kilocycles.
The Farm Service Cooperative of Charles City installed a 60 000 gallon petroleum bulk plant in Greene to serve area customers better and reduce daily trips for Vivian Kingery, a long time tank truck salesman based in Greene. Tanks arrived by Rock Island Railroad and were moved to Highway 14 on Greene's north edge. The Greene Farm Equipment and Agriculture Co. helped relocate the tanks.
1957 Iowa deer season forms are available from county recorders conservation officers and the State Conservation Commission. Gun licenses require a $10 fee and must arrive by October 14. Bow licenses have no deadline. Bow licenses unlimited. shotgun licenses capped at 6000 with possible drawing if gun licenses exceed 1000 after the initial allotment.
The Blue Raiders edged the Green Hornets 3 to 2 after extra innings in a pitchers duel. Tim Bramer and Doug Marsh pitched for the Blue Raiders as Green Hornets catcher Steve Scott tagged out two attempted steals. Blue Raiders finish league with 5 wins, 1 loss under Bruce Marsh and Vets Club sponsorship. The Brownies beat Yellow Jackets 6 to 5 for second place. Movers pitched a one hitter for Brownies, with Wharton and Myers hitting triples. Final standings list Blue Raiders 5-1, Brownies 2-4, Yellow Jackets 3-3, Green Hornets 1-5. Watermelon served. Pee Wees asked to return shirts promptly.
The City Golf Tournament first round must be played by Sunday evening August 11 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. The list shows 18 hole match play pairings including Sneed vs Dralle, Bartels vs Dralle, Teeple vs Bachman, Hamilton vs winner of Senne Knapp, and many others with all first-round losers entering the consolation bracket.
Bobby Grim of Indianapolis enters the North Iowa Fair big car race set for Sunday August 11 in Mason City Iowa seeking a first feature win there after three years of engine trouble rainouts and jinxed starts. Time trials begin at 1 36 p.m. He leads the IMCA point race aiming for a third straight title.
The national Dairy Cattle Congress small livestock divisions run on a split shift from September 28 to October 5. Poultry and rabbit judging starts September 28 at 9:00 a.m., waterfowl and pigeons display October 2, with exhibition closing October 5. Officials cite building sharing, broader exhibitor participation, and orderly judging as reasons. Supervisors include J. Holm, C. Hermann, D. Guthrie, and others from Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio.
Tilton Comedians set up a big tent show in Charles City next week from Monday through Sunday August 12 to 18. Three new acts debut including People are Funny on Tuesday, The Girl Who Could Stay No on Wednesday, and Henpecked Hour Night. Also scheduled are The Burlesque Queen on Monday, Ten Nights in a Bar Room on Friday, Toby Toler from Pumpkin Holter on Saturday, and Natella Needs 2 Nghties on Sunday.
Over 20000 people attended the first annual Butler County Fair in Allison as fair officials noted attendance estimates between 22 and 25 thousand last year. The saddle horse show opened with 150 inch horses competing while Greene and Shell Rock entrants topped several open and junior events. A mounted drill team from Greene performed as bicycle prizes went to Raney Brocka and David Knoll. Orville Wiebke of Greene earned honors in the Poland China class with the champion boar and progeny alongside multiple firsts.
Mrs. John Heinz entered Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Monday for treatment.
A stag supper is set for Tuesday evening at Round Grove Golf and Club. Attendees include Vern Rottler Thompson, Keith Dralle, Edwin McWhirter, C. G. Stark Weather, Dr. J. Truitt, Bob Curtis, Lowell Maxson, and Parker Schrutz as fellow committee members.
A youth night dance is planned for Friday evening at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. The event runs from 8 to 12 o'clock and features organizers Carol Tatum Jackie Marsh Jim Knapp Mike Mead Robin Boller and Bob Maxwell. Chaperones are Mr and Mrs Bob Curtis and Mr and Mrs Paul Cheney.
New residents Mr and Mrs Wayne Fuller of Allison welcome a son born Wednesday July 31 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The infant Jeffres Wayne weighs 7 pounds 13 ounces. Mrs Mider, farmer John Hermine of Greene and Mrs Hart Smith of Abl e Rok report a son born Wednesday July 31 weighing pounds and degrees. The Smith child is the former Betty Yorkes. The infant’s siblings were born in Gemmins where the father was stationed. Mr and Mrs Virgil Runge of Nora Springs announce a son born Friday August 2 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The boy weighs 6 pounds 13 ounces and is named Mark Alan. Mrs Runge is the former Phyllis Barnhart.
Superintendent and Mrs. V J Tatum and Mr and Mrs Norman Wolters plan a two week vacation beginning Sunday August. During their absence the Greene Community School office will operate from 9:00 to 12:00 with assistant secretary Mrs Gene Majewski and principals Donald Bachman and George Koons at the school to handle duties.
Judy Spratt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Spratt, returned home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Crares City on Monday after several days of treatment.
Esther Brinkman daughter of Mone and Fred Brinkman will vacation in Cordell Oklahoma at Carl Rose residence for a week then travel to Los Angeles California to visit her brother in law and sister Aldo Sartor family. She plans to return by September 1 to resume studies at Wartburg College.
The Red Cross swimming season at the Municipal Pool in Charles City ended Tuesday August 6. Mrs James Drakle, chairman, reported 129 registered at the start of the classes and praised the help of several volunteers for the success of the program.
Mr and Mrs. M and Mrs. L K Barnhart host the visit of Mrs Barney and Mr Musso at their home in Vandalia. The message notes charged with hospitality and family visit.
Rev R Duane Scott and wife and their six children left Loveland Colorado for Ogallala Nebraska to lead the Calvary Baptist Church now to be reorganized as a Baptist church in Greene. The family includes Michael 15 Allan 13 Steven 11 Margar et 6 and Janet 6. He is a graduate of Omaha Bible Institute and has pastored churches in Silver City Council Bluffs Loveland and was ordained in June this year.
An announcement by local coach Dennis Mair invites all interested football players to report for equipment at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday August 24 for physicals. The first practice is set for Monday August 26 with morning and afternoon sessions at 10:00 and 2:00.
Wayne Thomason took three first places two seconds and one third across Hydro and Utility events at the Bodee boat races on Sunday Glade Cel also competed earning two seconds and two thirds in various runabout classes Thomason won two firsts in Hydro and one in Utility while placing second in Hydro and seconds in Utility Glade Cel earned two seconds in A runabouts two thirds in B runabouts and one third in D runabout
