Greene High Band tops state contest with 34 Division I ratings
Greene High School band led the North Central District State Small Group Contest at Northwood with 34 Division I solos and ensembles. Britt, Tripoli, Northwood, Nashua, Garner, Lake Mills, Belmond, Clemon, Denver, Buffalo Center, Rockford and Riceville also scored. Fourteen students earned Division I solos and twenty ensembles received Division I ratings, praised by band director Ray Holtz.

Funeral Rites Today for Fred Blaas 100 in Greene
Funeral services for Greene's oldest resident, Fred Blaas, age 100, were held Wednesday at St Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene with Rev. Paul Metzger officiating. Blaas died Monday at Mathers Nursing Home. He was born August 18, 1872 in Windheim Germany and lived in Butler County over 85 years. He and Emma Kramer married in 1898 and farmed near Wilmar before moving to Greene in 1939, with a brief return to country life 1941-1944.

Elementary students build eagle nesting area land trust
Greene Elementary School students collected Hunt-Wesson labels to fund private land near Chippewa National Forest Minnesota. Each label funded about 15 square feet, creating a 1 005 square foot area in a child’s name. Two pairs of nesting bald eagles found, land to be turned to the US Forest Service as the first National Children is Eagle Nesting Area.

Rites Held for Anna DeMar 90 in Greene
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St Marys Catholic Church in Greene for Anna Marie DeMar 90 who died April 13 in Charles City. Officiating was Rev Edmund Cooney. She was born in Dane Wisconsin July 30 1882 and married Frank DeMar July 2 1904 in Greene. Survivors include 3 sons 6 daughters 1 sister 40 grandchildren 50 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Burial followed at St Marys Cemetery with Reid’s Funeral Chapel in charge.
