The editor warns that higher reef payments and income taxes could push people to rely on government. He urges Greene residents to reject rumors and gossip, noting most are unfounded and tracing origins is hard. Silence is golden as spring cleanup approaches, and locals are urged to discard gossip at the city dump.
Greene Community School hosts two volleyball matches this evening at 7 30 p m. between faculty men and high school boys and between women teachers and high school girls. Public invited with 50 cent gate fee. proceeds go to the Harold Shultz Fund.
Fire departments from Greene and Marble Rock responded Tuesday around 2 50 p m to a grass fire along the railroad about 3 miles north of Greene. Strong winds fanned separate blazes, keeping firefighters busy much of the afternoon.
Mrs. Kenneth Kock came home Sunday from Floyd County Memorial Hospital after dental surgery. Esther Hollingsworth was admitted Sunday for minor surgery and returned home Tuesday.

Dougherty son of Mr and Mrs James J Dougherty of Dougherty has graduated from a U S Air Force technical school at Keesler AFB Mississippi He trained as a telecommunications specialist and was assigned to a unit of the Air Force Communications Service at Tinker AFB Oklahoma A 1967 graduate of Rockwell Swaledale High School Rockwell.

Dr Reginald L Matthews field representative for the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches opens a four day Bible conference at Calvary Baptist Church Greene April 13 to 16 at 745 pm and Sunday at 11 am. The fellowship covers 1316 churches and supports six colleges and seminaries and several agencies and missionaries. Matthews began his duties January 1 1967 and has a long record in missions including trips to Hawaii Japan India China Palestine Wales and British Guiana. He serves on multiple boards including Baptist Mid Misions and Hiawatha Baptist Mission.
Mrs Ed Heitland was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday and will undergo major surgery today Wednesday. The report notes the patient is in stable condition and under hospital care ahead of the procedure.
Graveside services were held at Rose Hill Cemetery for Mrs Lynn Shafer of Bay Cliff Texas who died Thursday Rev Wayne Gjerde officiated. Born July 21 1912 in Fargo North Dakota Ina Lenore Clapham married Lynn Shafer May 4 1937. She lived in Greene then Houston survivors include husband a brother and two sisters Funeral services were held in Houston then burial at Reid's Chapel on Saturday.
Vern Echelberger 44 opened Echelberger Implement Inc incorporated, formerly Leo Gabe and John Hamilton owners, to run the business after buying the local John Deere dealership. He has spent twenty years with John Deere and was a salesman in Clarion. The family plans to move to Greene once housing is found. they have three sons Dan Raymond and Royce who will depart for Vietnam April 18 to serve in the Army artillery.
The Greene Community School announces the third quarter honor roll with twenty nine percent of juniors and seniors recognized. Percentages rose from 23 percent in the first quarter and 24 percent in the second. Honor roll lists include named students across seventh through seniors with an asterisk for straight A’s.
Butler County offers dust control for rural roads again after favorable responses in 1968. Residents must apply and pay by May 2 with calcium chloride treatment available in two applications starting June and August. Minimum treatment covers 509 feet by 5 feet, costing the stated base amount with prorated extra area.
The Mid-America Chorale directed by John Dexter will tour in its second season with free concerts in St Ansgar High School gym tonight at 7 30 p m and in Rockford on Thursday April 10 at 7 30 p m The 24 member professional group has performed in 131 communities during the two seasons and audiences have shown strong enthusiasm across schools and public audiences
Butler County Representative Charles E Grassley argues cities may seek new taxes to address metropolitan financial issues. Proposals include income, earnings, sales, and wheel taxes, all to be approved by local referenda. He notes opposition from some city officials who prefer state aid, which is not available.
High school graduates seeking forestry plant or biology majors may win one of four $1,600 Homelite Textron scholarships for 3 years of 4 H work and freshman enrollment in 1969. Two $800 crop production awards from Chevron Ortho require one year 4 H. Applications to State 4 H office in Chicago with transcripts. The Ramblers open spring baseball on Thursday April 10 hosting Rockwell at the local diamond. Coach Jerry Eimers notes returnees Jim Shultz Dick Stuntz Gary Johnson and others as starters undecided with Johnson likely on mound and Shultz at catcher. Schedule runs April 10 14 17 21 24 28 30 May 5 9 20 with several home and away games.
A public seminar on human health will run from 2:00 to 4:00 p m on April 16 and 23 at the Holiday Inn on Mason City west edge. The sessions cover public health nursing services funding and home health agencies with focus on community nutrition programs and meals on wheels. Margaret Kapler will speak and lead discussions. Representatives from communities lacking nursing services may confer with those where services exist.
Mrs. L. L. Barth learned from nephew Ronald Reimer that her mother Mrs. Elmer McNeal was killed in an auto accident in Garden Grove California last Friday. McNeal's first husband Jack Reimer, long deceased, ran a Greene grocery and gas station for years.

Betty Miss Deloris Mahlstedt of Fredericksburg and Miss Peggy Gilbert of Clarksville won all expenses paid Rural Electric Youth Tour trips to Washington DC. Deloris, Fredericksburg High junior, enjoys history English and math while active in 4 H and band. Peggy, Plainfield Community High junior, excels in US history and participates in softball basketball and Future Teachers of America. The pair will join about 100 Iowa youths to tour the capital June 8 1969 with hundreds more from other states at a large gathering June 11.
