The editors praise Dwight D. Eisenhower’s service while urging Rock Island to install signal lights at the East Ely Street railroad crossing after a near-miss. They note cold weather delays and warn of potential loss of records if a fire hits the courthouse, urging a vote on a new building. Gambling with fate is deemed bad business.
In Floyd County Memorial Hospital a Monday check up admitted patient was Lewis Majewski. Also admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital was Lester Adelmund of rural Greene.
Palm Sunday actions at First Presbyterian Church of Greene confirmed nine youths into church membership: Timothy Hamilton Marilyn Kingery Russell McGee Tracy Ray Diane Miller Douglas Miller Nancy Tack Paul Glaspie Keith Kielman plus Robert Mc Gee and Alan Starkweather by adult baptism. First communion set for Maundy Thursday. three adults received on reaffirmation of faith. Elder Merlyn Parks assisted Rev. Donald K. Welsh Sr. in confirmation baptisms and receptions.
Mrs. Maevis Lindahl of Interstate Power Company participated in Amana Refrigeration seminars at Amana. The three day sessions trained home economists from utilities, schools, and newspapers nationwide on microwave cooking techniques and applications for the Amana Radarange Microwave Oven.
A cold spell began Friday afternoon and formed ice on the Shell Rock River. Ice released during daylight created thin flows over the Greene dam for several days. Morning readings hit 1 degree below zero with little warming since. The cold should ease flood threat as runoff remains light.
The First Presbyterian Church and Saint Peter's Lutheran Church will sponsor a sunrise service at Greene's football field at 6:00 a m on Easter. The Rev Paul Metzger will lead with help from youth of both churches and Rev Donald K Welsh Sr will deliver the sermon “Easter Without Ending.” A breakfast follows in the Lutheran social hall for early worshippers.
Plans call for a faculty student volleyball event at Greene High School gym on Wednesday April 9 with faculty men and women facing students at 730 pm. Admission is 50 cents and all proceeds go to the Harold Shultz Fund. A 530 pm box social will also raise funds for the same cause.
Kevin Jewell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Jewell, had an appendectomy Friday at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
The Greene Heart Fund Drive has been completed with a total of 433.38 collected. Mrs. Harry Greene, the town chairman, and Dale Schroeder, county treasurer, express gratitude to all contributors for a successful campaign.

A three quarter ton International pickup with four wheel drive joins Greene Rural Fire Service fleet. It carries 270 gallon water tank, pumps 250 gallons per minute, 20 foot and roof ladders, multiple hoses, extinguishers, and tools. Made by American Fire Apparatus Company, the unit enhances rural field and building fire response for Greene and surrounding townships.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Lindloff welcomed a son and daughter born Friday at Floyd Charles City. David Paul weighs 5 pounds 9 ounces, Darla Lynne 5 pounds. They join oneyearold Candace Ray. Grandparents are Paul Batton and Christian Lindloff of Marble Rock with great grandfather Carl Peterson of Latimer.
The Greene Ramblers start 1969 track with a 4:00 p.m. dual against Mason City Newman High School weather permitting. Coach Jim Shoemaker expects a 35-man squad to be stronger with depth in relays. Returning lettermen include Jerry Shultz Jim Shultz Steve Hildebrand Dan Eimers and more, with newcomers adding scoring power. Schedule runs April 3 to May 17 including district and state meets.
Ray Holtz, instrumental music director at Greene High School, announced state solo and ensemble ratings. Six Division I solo ratings went to Ann Hanson, Sherry Debner, Mary Rottler, Susan Rottler, Juba Lyle Williamson, and Kent Jacobson. Division I ensembles included multiple woodwind, brass, and percussion groups with numerous Greene students, such as Connie Johnson, Roseanne McBurney, Bruce Barnes, Wendell Stuntz, Cynthia Ebling, Mary Stauffer, Jane Mehlen, Delbert Moser, Gary Debner, Ann Hanson, Jolene Litterer, Myrna Landers, Jane McRoberts, Mary Rottler, Rhonda Majewski, Wendy Martzahn, Barbara Hanson, Susan Rottler, Rachel Cheney, Rosemary Bamker, Gary Reed, Becky Bellows, and others.
Convalescing Mrs. George Staudt was discharged from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Saturday. She is recuperating at the home of her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Wm T Abell of Dougherty.
Local churches will hold Good Friday observances with a 7 30 p m service at St Peter s Lutheran Church and a union service at 8 p m in the Methodist Church joined by Presbyterian and Church of the Brethren congregations. Dorcas Circle leads worship at the Methodist Church with a mass choir presenting Seven Last Words and related hymns sung by soloists Mrs Ervin Loomis Graydon Anderson Mrs Harlan Helm and Mrs Duane Smith.
Residents of Abilene Kansas and across Iowa mourn the death of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Burial is today in Abilene with a funeral at Washington National Cathedral. Iowans paused to honor Ike as post offices and many schools closed for the day despite weather-caused closings earlier in January.
Pfc Michael Alexander stationed at Fort Gordon Georgia returns home on furlough and will report to Fort Dix New Jersey on April 3 before sailing to Germany. He joined the U S Army May 26 and finished basic training at Fort Lewis Washington. A March 23 dinner hosted by his parents Mr and Mrs C D Alexander honored him with guests including Mr and Mrs J W Hobbs Nancy and Donn Hobbs Mr and Mrs Lyle McCoy of Albert Lea and Mr and Mrs Marvin Alexander and John of Omaha Nebraska.
To Open Car Wash Bill Worley and Harold Kock plan to open a car wash in the old West Side Texaco building beside the Shell Rock River. Mr Worley flew to Columbus Ohio last Tuesday and returned on Wednesday after purchasing washing equipment for the new establishment. The grand opening will be announced at a later date.
Mr and Mrs Duane Schafer of Waterloo announce the birth of a daughter, Andrea Rae, Tuesday March 18, weighing 6 pounds 14.55 ounces. She has a sister, Jacqueline Rae. Grandparents are Howard Boesen of Waterloo and Mr and Mrs Otto Schafer.
Youth members of the Church of the Brethren lead an Easter sunrise service at 6 30 a m Sunday April 6 in the Methodist church. Afterward the Methodist young people will serve breakfast in the church basement.
The Greene Jaycees plan a supper meeting at 7 00 p m in El Bar Lanes this Wednesday. Reports from committees on sandbox fill flood control and the youth center will be presented during the program.
Aaron Jewell owned bulk oil and gasoline truck damaged when fire started under the vehicle at 8 20 Tuesday morning near Greene. He drove the truck onto the blacktop to escape the blaze. Hoses tires and bottom were destroyed and total damage is unknown.
Mary Rottler named most valuable Ramblerette after scoring 627 points in the season and a 33 point per game average. The Ramblerettes finished 16 wins and 3 losses and swept conference play 10-0 to win the Corn Bowl Crown. Rottler set a school record with 58 points in a game and shares team honors with co captains Donna Weichers and Jane McRoberts.
The Bristow Elevator and Albrecht Feed Mill received Kent Feeds Inc. awards for high feed sales and excellent service. Rosie Riggins and Henry Smeins accepted the honors from O. W. Joiner at Kent’s Annual Dealer Award Banquet in Waterloo Iowa, with over 400 Kent dealers in attendance.
State Senator Vernon Kyhl outlines the eleventh week of the session focusing on revenue and the budget, warns of minority delaying tactics, and notes a Senate vote to lower the voting age to 19. He discusses reapportionment progress, with the 41st district likely unchanged at 52,612 population.
Fred Feldman underwent major surgery on Thursday in St Marys Hospital Rochester Minnesota. He is listed as a patient in Room 3 173.
Harold Shultz, seriously injured in a January truck train crash, remains in a coma after transfer from Rochester to the Des Moines Veterans Hospital. A Greene Community School box social is planned for April 5 at 5 30 p.m. with proceeds to the Harold Shultz Fund. At 7 30 p.m. faculty men versus high school boys and women teachers versus girls volleyball games will follow, with a 50 cent gate fee benefiting the same fund.
The American Cancer Society received 10250 dollars from a bowling tournament sponsored by EILBar Lanes. T. J. Spain, Butler County Crusade Chairman, notes 245 bowlers entered and winners earned 5 dollar prizes. High men’s line Darrel Barth 267. High men’s series Dan Weigand 690.
