Navy Ens. John F. O’Brien, son of Mr and Mrs George O’Brien of Greene Iowa, serves with Flight Crew 11 of Patrol Squadron 50 at the U S Marine Corps Air Facility in Iwakuni Japan. He entered the Navy in June 1957 after attending Wartburg College.
At the last Board of Education meeting the district discussed establishing a school bus maintenance shop to improve efficiency and reduce costs. They plan to rent a building initially and consider constructing or purchasing later, while seeking a top-flight full time mechanic. Vv. J. Tatum
The first demonstration of a new crop drying method will be on the Paul Tiedt farm two miles north of junction 63 and 93 near Tripoli on April 10 and 11. Hawkeye Industries of Waverly manufactured the method. The prior Illinois event drew many farm-management and seed-company representatives.
The board of Investors, Inc. the largest mutual fund affiliate of Investors Diversified Services declares a quarterly dividend of 9 cents per share payable April 16, 1959 to shareholders of record at end of business March 31, 1959. Payable from undistributed net investment income marking the 74th consecutive dividend.
A Greene Community High School committee of twelve from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools visited March 30 and 31 to evaluate the school. The review surveyed classes, faculty, and students, with a written report to follow and a final decision likely in May. The district cites higher standards, attracting superior teachers, and aiding college admissions as key benefits. Vv. J. Tatum.
The Boy Scout Court of Honor will be held next Monday evening April 13 at 7 30 in the high school auditorium. Eagle awards will go to Bruce Mead and James Hoben with other tenderfoot through life rank milestones and merit badges presented. Henry Burma of Allison will speak, former speaker of the House and chairman of the state board of control. Lunch will follow the program and all scouts parents and leaders are invited.
Captain W H McDonnell stayed at the W H McRoberts residence from Saturday to today before sailing to Spain. He will be stationed there for three years after departing from Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho.
The Greene Community Parent Teacher Association met on Wednesday April 1 in the school lunch room. Bruce Mead spoke a humorous piece What It Was Was Football and FFA members presented a model meeting with project slides.
Youth Center sponsors a Saturday dance produced by Jack Rockefeller and His Top 40 at the high school gymnasium. The event begins at 7 30 p m and youth center rules apply with an admission charge. Parents will chaperone.
Greene Ramblers win season opener over Allison 3 to 2 in eight innings. John Wharton and Bob Barth combined on a three hitter with nine strikeouts and six walks. Dan Stubbe drove in the winning run as Larry Gabe had two hits. Barth supported the effort with a key triple play and a double play to end late threats. The Ramblers host Charles City Thursday and New Hartford Monday.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club will hold its annual Cribbage Tournament Sunday April 12 at 1 45 p m at the Club House.
The Veteran's Club will sponsor a kite derby this spring to benefit local youth. Under Harold Holzschuh and Ja Whitehead a date set for April 26 with 1 30 P M registration and 2 00 P M events including box kites tailless kites novelty home made kites and many prize classes.

Charles Williams of Grevae reports Vern Cave of Felton California broke his hip. He underwent surgery and a pin was placed in the fracture while living with his daughter Mrs Lloyd Lacey at Box 72 Redwood Drive Felton California.
Mrs John Heuer has been discharged from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after treatment for a cracked pelvis suffered when she slipped on steps at the Wilmar Church.
Carl Frascht 19 and Richard Balkenende 18 both of Marble Rock and James Osier 18 of Greene pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in Marble Rock at midnight on Tuesday March 31. Frascht also pleaded guilty to assault and battery and was given a 30 day suspended jail term. Deputy Sheriff Lane said they attempted to force Gen. Nitcher to open his cafe and serve them after closing, pounding on the window and damaging the door. Marble Rock marshal Hearn arrested them and they were moved to the county jail in Charles City. Nitcher charged Frascht with assault and battery for an earlier offense on March 24.
Officials of Round Grove Golf and Country Club announced the grounds are ready and members may start playing on Thursday of this week.
Greene High School medley relay team finished third in the indoor meet at Iowa City led by Burroughs Kepple Grendler and Slocum. Clare Grendler tied for fourth in the open 440 while 77 boys showcased the squad with returning lettermen Burroughs Kepple Menken Menken Grendler and Slocum. Schedule runs through May with districts and state meets planned. Mohawk relays are canceled due to interest.
A falling board from a lumber truck damaged a 1954 Buick driven by Mrs Joe Wood and her daughter Sheri Shultz near Fairfield while returning with Robert Shultz a Parsons College student. The windshield and front end were damaged but no injuries occurred and the car was driven home.
Mr and Mrs Vern Van Raden welcomed a daughter born this morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed 7 pounds 9 1/2 ounces.
Walter Marsh sustained three fractures in his right leg when a pile of seed corn toppled him at Greene Motor Co on Friday morning. Two breaks above the ankle and one below the knee left him needing treatment at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City where doctors set the bones.
Mrs Jomer Hurd of Avedale entered Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City Monday and underwent surgery on Tuesday morning, with details of the procedure not disclosed.

A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Packard barn on the Leon Packard farm at Packard on Monday afternoon. Minor Dix, occupying the farm with his wife, saw smoke around 1 30 and alerted Greene and Clarksville fire departments. High wind and early start left the barn and a manure spreader inside a total loss. Nine calves were saved. the house and other buildings remained undamaged and the Packard Elevator was kept safe.
G B Eckles president of the Butler County Farm Bureau argues farmers cannot finance half of school costs with only 18 percent of income. He notes farmers hold over 50 percent of state valuation yet 26 percent of population and 18 percent of state income in 1857. He urges legislators to raise Agricultural Land Tax Credit funding to better balance urban and rural property taxes and sustain schools.
William Glaser was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Monday for treatment.
The annual spring meeting of the Butler County Health Association will be held next Monday evening at 6 30 oclock in Skinner at Clare. Marian Law of Waterloo will discuss prevention and Mrs Held will present Whats New in Tuberculin Testing. Officers will be elected and the executive council met to set budget plans for the new year. A report on the 1958 Christmas Seal sale by Mrs Dale Long of Clarksville shows $3199.99 contributed in Butler county.
Richard Arvene Nehring of Owasa Iowa and Harley Dalane Hembd of Ackley Iowa were arrested by Butler County police and the Highway Patrol after a fleeing incident in Parkersburg Early Sunday morning April 5 1959 A bloodhound located Nehring a block away Roy Hauser caught a fleeing Hembd hiding in a ditch One hour south of Aplington THP charge counts include intoxication on a public street driving while license suspended and reckless driving Both men failed to post bonds and remain jailed in Allison Iowa Heath Morris Grandon of New Hartford was jailed for intoxication after a Mayors court sentence to eight days in county jail.
