Joseph Viers, age nine, hooked a 5 pound 24 inch catfish using nightcrawlers to begin the fishing season. Band uniforms ordered for May arrivals. Greene notes the band's best sounding yet shabbiest dressed musicians in northern Iowa. Music Mothers seek public help to cover uniform costs for the large group.
Mrs. Inez E. Fitzgerald aged 73 died Sunday at her home in Charles City She was born May 18 1892 in Pleasant Grove Township to Leander and Emma Chambers Perry She married Harry J Fitzgerald on December 20 1911 Survivors include daughter Catherine Schrup brother Roy Perry sister Edith Birney and three grandchildren Funeral services were held Tuesday at 9:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church Charles City Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery Charles City
The letting for 22.06 miles of Butler County roads was held in Ames on March 30, 1966. The routes run west and east of Greene and through Clarks ville to the Bremer County line. Low bidder was Western Engineering Company of Harlan at $243,297.38, Greene Limestone Company second at $245,964.19, with the high bid among five bidders at $255,228.96.
Dr. Stanley N. Graven of the University of Wisconsin pediatrics department will present a paper at the International Symposium on Antibiotics in Castle Reinhardsbrun Thuringa East Germany May 2 to 5. He will also present in Oslo Norway on May 9 and in Prague October at a Prague Czechoslovakia medical society institute. Graven is listed in the 1966 edition of Distinguished Young Men of America.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 26 and a leader hiked west of Greene on Saturday to search for fossils. They found fossil coral and ammonites, brachiopods, an Indian skinning knife, a grinding stone, and a geode. Next Saturday April 9 at 9:00 a.m. they plan to plant evergreen seedlings in the Christmas tree area east of the viaduct, seeking help from troop fathers.
The Ramblers aim to start their season at Charles City after weather delayed the opener to at least Thursday, April 7, when Greene hosts New Hartford. Veterans anchor the squad with several youngsters from Babe Ruth joining practice. pitching and catching are key concerns as the schedule lists 11 games from April 7 to May 20 with home and away dates.
Ben Smeins 83 of Ackley died March 30. Survived by wife Fannie Potter three sons Henry Greene John Ap lington and Ebert Kesley one daughter Mrs Lyle Scarrow Aplington and many grandchildren. Funeral Friday April 1 in Ackley Attendees included Frank Nikolas Park Rapids Minnesota Craig Smeins Marshalltown and Henry Smeins with Dennis.
The Greene Fire Department was dispatched at 2 20 PM Monday to extinguish a grass fire along Highway 14 at the west edge of Greene.
The NIAD Tax Study Committee will meet at 7 30 p m on April 11 in the Extension Office 2023 5S Federal Mason City. Executive members Larry Miller Britt and Art Jielden Manly will serve as temporary co chairs until the committee elects its own members.

Mrs. Thomas Lewis age 75 died Sunday at a Cresco hospital. Survivors include four sons Harold Greene Ray Waterloo Paul McIntire and Clarence Cresco. five daughters Don Cummings LeRoy Ed Rink Cresco James Dotzler Roger Arness Winona and Edwin Miller Whalen. a brother Rudy Ratz Cresco. a sister Mrs Fred Peters Cresco. and many grandchildren. Funeral services are today at 2:00 p.m. at Bradley Funeral Home Cresco with burial at New Oregon Cemetery.
Airman Third Class John Backer son of Mr and Mrs John J Backer of Greene has graduated at Sheppard AFB Texas from the training course for U S Air Force technical instructors He will remain at Sheppard as an instructor and had visited his parents from Thursday to Tuesday He earned an associate degree from Mason City Junior College The River City Chorus of Mason City directed by Ron Phillips will sing at Greene Community High School Auditorium on Thursday evening April 14 at 8 00 oclock under the sponsorship of the Senior Girl Scouts of Greene The chorus includes men from towns within 50 to 60 miles of Mason City and features Greene resident Calvin Kelly In 1965 the chorus appeared before about 16000 people and raised over 2200 for worthwhile causes through schools and clubs
Cora Mac Wilson 90 died at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City after four and a half weeks as a patient. Born April 6 1875 in Sycamore Illinois to George and Cornelia Wyman Helson she lived in Marble Rock 47 years. Survivors include daughter Marian Ludwig Minneapolis Minnesota two sons Harold Hot Springs South Dakota Lester Waterloo four grandchildren four great grandchildren. The Young Republicans of Butler County will hold a meeting in the Allison courthouse courtroom on Wednesday evening April 13 at 8 o clock. All young Republicans are urged to attend.
James and Keith Dralle purchase full ownership of Dralle’s Department Store Inc from Henry Dralle and W H Buchholz. Henry stays on as consultant while the brothers oversee the remodeling and expansion of the northeast Iowa store, a longtime corner shopping hub with a furniture store added in 1964.
David Brown age 16 son of George H. Brown and Patricia Neal of Greene received the Eagle badge on March 29 in a First Methodist Church ceremony led by Dr. M L Knutson district advancement committeeman. He belongs to the Order of the Arrow and holds the God and Country Award.
Bids opened March 25 for two Butler County bridge projects after a March 23 postponement due to a blizzard. Project B3A received Brennan Construction Co of Lansing as low bidder at 27 20.54, with Taylor and Tsenhower of Hudson second. Bridge spans 125 by 24 feet over Flood Creek. cost split between counties. Project 132E a 100 by 24 foot stay bridge over McClure Creek north of Section 32 in Shell Rock Township. Westendorf Construction of Waverly low bidder at 18 728.42, Burton Construction of Cedar Falls second at 19 357.88. Five bids per project. contracts awarded to the low bidders.
The community Easter Cantata The Atonement by Sydney H. Peters will be presented on Easter evening April 10 at 7 30 p m in the Allison Bristow School Gymnasium. 72 singers from Allison Greene and Bristow under Mrs Emmett Busch direction with Emory Niehaus on piano and Mrs Kenneth Stirling on organ. Special solos and trios include Dean Uhlenhopp Lyle Stirling and others. A free will offering at intermission supports music for the Special School at Allison and the Mental Health Clinic at Waverly.
About 400 people attended the Floyd County N F O Ladies Auxiliary sausage supper in Roseville on March 29. Floyd County N F O. president Charles Pyatt introduced the Vigor Ionettes who performed barbershop harmony. John Kock, N F O National director from Unionville, Michigan, was introduced by Melvin Zubrad. Kock, who came to the U S from Austria after hardships in World War I, addressed the crowd.
Bruce Cheney son of Mr and Mrs Paul Cheney has been selected as a chorus member of the Municipal Opera Company in St Louis Missouri for the summer. He and two other State College of Town Cedar Falls students were chosen from about 400 tryouts.
Mr and Mrs Verry Eckenrod of Winona Minnesota announce the birth of their son Grant William born Sunday April 3. Weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Paul Cheney Greene and Mr and Mrs Leonard Eckenrod Nashua.
