Courageous Nurse Hero of Civil War and Steamboat Cook
The article tells how Natie Hanson left Tioga County to escape a boorish lover, hid as a man to work as a first class boat cook between Detroit and Buffalo, then in Cincinnati on the Ohio Mississippi boats. She joined the Union Army in 1861, rose to sergeant, served in General Thomas division at Nashville, revealed she was a woman to Captain Hopkins, was sent to hospital, resumed nursing until war end, then married Captain Hopkins, and later bought a Cuban plantation with two children. The couple was later located by Colonel Wilson in 1876 and sought to inform her parents of her true life. She plans to visit them that summer.
