Opium Habit Sours Former Atlantic Club Pitcher
Thomas Francis, once a noted Atlantic Club pitcher, was hospitalized after stealing to fund an opium habit. A police autopsy of events shows a fall from grace following a lifelong baseball career and a severe addiction that began after opium was given for pain. Nurses and doctors managed his withdrawal with a mild narcotic, while Francis recounted his past in brief moments of clarity. He is described as a Brooklyn family member, aged twenty six, once earning $2,500 yearly plus gate shares, now degraded by addiction and crime.
