Charles J. Arnold recalls Jack Denny once led a noisy East End band and now heads a Montreal jazz orchestra. The piece notes his early “play and run” days and announces his next Putnam County appearance at 5 30 PM.
Funeral services for G Will Conklin Greencastle electrical dealer who died at his Locust street home were held Sunday afternoon at 4 with Rev. B H Bruner of the Christian church presiding. Interment followed at Forest Hill cemetery with the Odd Fellows lodge and Spanish American War veterans participating. Pallbearers were A J Duff Frank Ashworth B P King R L Pierce Will Jones and Art Williams.
A prose column recalls a mass meeting with Al Smith supporters in Houston and meeting Senator Thaddeus Caraway in a tavern. The Arkansas Democrat jokes about his aviation sickness and recounts farm crop woes in Putnam County. A Sunday school gathering at Mrs KE Bartley’s home invites all at 7 30.
Fred Jones ten of Roachdale appeared before the County Board of Commissioners seeking damages for injuries from a road drag accident last October. While operating the drag levers on a corner stone, he was thrown and suffered facial fractures and loss of sight in one eye. County insurance was not in place at the time, so a settlement per the State Indemnity board schedule is expected.
George Caine a South Bend lineman jailed in Indianapolis on a 5000 bond for attacking his 14 year old daughter as detectives probe links to the 8 year old Marveline Appel slaying. Caine admits travel with his step daughter and Ray Fields but denies Appel connection.
Franklin P. Cole formerly of Bethel M. E. Brazil and Knightsville will enter Boston University Theological School this fall. He preached his farewell sermons at Bethel and Knightsville last Sunday and has led religious work near Brazil during college years.
Funeral services for Albert R. McKay were conducted at the Terre Haute Masonic Temple with Rev. J. A. Lord presiding. Rituals by Masonic Lodge 20 and Purdue fraternity brothers accompanied the ceremony with Greencastle attendees including the Sniders and McCurry family.
Heavy showers in the last 48 hours provide relief for stock water and pastures, with tomato and late potato crops expected to benefit. Rain came too late to save many arm crops but offers partial relief and may require more rainfall for lasting pasture recovery.
In Crawfordsville on September 1 two liquor law violators were sent to the state farm at Putnamville for failure to pay fines. Jack Curry, ex Ladoga baseball player, was fined 100 dollars plus costs totaling 150 and must serve 150 days with 30 suspended if paid. Ashley Thomas, arrested on a drunk charge, received a 40 day sentence with a 10 dollar fine and costs.
Labor Day prompts school holidays and store closings in Greencastle while the September term of the Putnam Circuit Court opens after vacation. Local officials Doctors Stroube and Gill discuss health and rheumatism illness. The American Legion plans a September 8 meeting with Congressman Noble J. Johnson as speaker, with a later event featuring Courtland C. Gillen.
Chrysler dealer O J Rector visits the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis to view exhibits and engage with attendees today.
The forecast calls for light showers in the city on Monday and in the eastern and southern sectors on Tuesday, with cooler temperatures expected Tuesday overall.

At Osage Hills, ten miles west of St Louis, the Texas Special derailed after a placed wreck blocked the rail. Eleven killed, about thirty injured as two coaches were torn from trucks and men worked through debris. Engineer Ernest Write among the dead. eastbound service halted, routing via Missouri Pacific.
The board met in regular session and will join the county council tomorrow to fix the tax rate levy set annual appropriations and make special appropriations to cover deficits in 1950 funds.
Cars owned by Lee McKamey of Franklin Street garage and Walter Ruley of Kirkspatrick Illinois sustained front end damage in a collision at the Washington Street and College Avenue corner Saturday. No serious injuries reported. Ed Simmons, previously hospitalized after a paralytic stroke, was moved home to recover.
Mr and Mrs Roscoe Stites of Elizabeth street announce a daughter Avla Joe born at home Sunday Mr and Mrs Ernest Stites of Limedale announce a son Donald Eugene born at home Sunday Roscoe Stites and Ernest Stites are brothers and residents in different households.
Paul Barnett of Kerr Fern, about 22, was found not guilty and charges of assault and battery dismissed by May or W. OL. Denman in city court after arraignment. Charles Wright, the uncle, had alleged Barnett struck him with a stone and bit him following a dispute over a wire. Witnesses testified Wright struck Barnett with a board before Barnett attacked, and that Wright insulted Mrs. Pirnett, his sister.
Mrs. Ida Cline aged 61 wife of Albert Cline of Marion township died at her east Fillmore home Sunday evening after a stroke ten days earlier. A Greencastle native, she was daughter of the late Joseph and Ree Newman. Survived by daughter Nellie husband and three sisters. Funeral Wednesday at 2:30 at Bethel Church with cemetery interment. Rev. Ho A Sherrill to officiate.
Two armed men in a Chevrolet coach robbed Charles Blue and his companion on State Road 48 south of Crawfordsville around 11 PM. They fled with about 8 or 4 dollars, left a watch, and were chased by Crawfordsville and Montgomery County authorities. a deputy sheriff fired on the fleeing car as the bandits escaped.
All nine Putnam county churches were represented at the county meeting Sunday at Somerset Christian church north of Greencastle. The crowd filled the church for Bible school and morning service, and afternoon attendance was over half the crowd. The gathering voted to make it an annual event with time and place set by the County Missionary Organization. Dr. Jesse M. Bader of the United Christian Missionary Society spoke on past church history and future tasks.
