Charles J. Arnold recounts a humorous episode from 1928 involving his straw hat season faux pas and a local hospital visit. He describes Fred Snively recovering from throat infection at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, visits by friends, and a boxing night with Chuck Wiggins and Sekyra, ending with a chaotic street brawl outside the Tabernacle and a deputy referee overwhelmed by the scene.
Sol Sudranski declares his run for the Republican nomination for state treasurer. The convention of the Republican party will nominate the candidate next month. Sudranski, longtime Green Castle merchant and active Republican worker, is backed by Republicans of the Fifth district.
Olin R. Holt and Ora Butler were convicted by a federal jury of conspiracy to defeat the national Prohibition law. Sentencing is set for May 24 with a maximum two year term and 10,000-dollar fine for the conspiracy. Defense plans to appeal. The case centers on the Hoosier Protective Association aiding bootleggers in Howard, Madison and Marion counties, with members paying 3 dollars weekly and Holt serving as their attorney. Six Kokomo bootleggers testified, saying they quit the trade and paid fees.
Putnam County Credit Association officers arrange their annual dinner for Monday May 19 at 6 30 PM at the country club. Program includes President Russell Brown remarks directors meeting benefits to members out of county speakers Nathan Call Glen Lyon grocer Lester Conrad and topics on monthly statements slow accounts and more.
DePauw University will unite the education and psychology departments under a single head next year. Dr. Fowler D. Brooks from Johns Hopkins University will head the new combined department and Dr. W. Vernon Lytle will take a year’s leave as psychology head. Dr. Brooks, a noted educator with degrees from Baker, Oklahoma, Columbia, and others, joins to strengthen the university’s offerings in education and psychology.
Twenty pre school age children ahead of entering First Ward School are examined for defects at the school building. Doctors Ayler Hutcheson and Throop conduct the exams with county nurse Mary Agnes Miller and First Ward PTA assisting. Second Ward exams were completed earlier and Third Ward tests are planned for next Wednesday.
Rev. B. H. Bruner R. P. Mullins Gray Potter and Glen Lyon tour Terre Haute and visit the Kiwanis club during visitation week as district clubs exchange visits with neighboring groups.
Greencastle High School baseball coach W. F. Bausman takes his team to Indianapolis to face the Indiana Boys Preparatory School in the afternoon as part of the capital city's homecoming events. The Tigers also schedule a return game with Worthington next Monday and travel to Terre Haute on May 29 to play the Gertsmeyer nine seeking revenge for their only loss.
Otis N. Gibson 56, former Greencastle resident and father of Pearl Gibson, teacher at Greencastle High School, died Wednesday evening at his Rockville home from pneumonia after weeks of declining health. He had lived in Rockville eight years and ran a barber shop with a partner. Survived by widow Nellie Rouneh, a daughter Pearl, a son Paul, and sister Mrs John Cherry. Funeral Sunday at 2 PM in Rockville Methodist Church, Rev Fraley officiating. interment Forest Hill cemetery, then burial in Greencastle. Burial procession to Greencastle follows service.
Kenneth Ivan Williams 21 a student of South Vine street and Eileen Scobee 20 a secretary of Green Castle obtain a marriage license.

The Greencastle Masonic lodge entertained thirty Roachdale members at a banquet last evening with music by Sam Wilton Heber Ellis and Elmer Crawley. J F Cannon bought the Irvin property on east Seminary street from Mrs Elizabeth Irvin of New York and will remodel and move in. The earth will pass on a line with the comet on May 18. G M Ruark sold his Marion township farm to Homer Dunlavy and bought a Willis Wright farm and Wright property in Fillmore.
William Klein 17 son of Charles and Mrs. Klein pleaded guilty before Judge Hughes in Putnam county court to forging checks. He was ordered to Indiana State Reform School for 2 1/4 years with sentence suspended and paroled to his father. Klein said he forged checks to obtain funds to go to Kansas for harvest work after previously seeking work in Cincinnati.
Orville Bitzer, coal hauler of East Anderson street, took a small amount of carbolic acid at home in an apparent suicide attempt after a family quarrel. He was rushed to a hospital with burned lips and throat, later returning home. Authorities say the act was meant to frighten his family.
Mr and Mrs Frank Bittles, departing Greencastle for Little Rock Arkansas, gave Putnam County Hospital 30 books to join the library. Miss Eva Milburn, superintendent, said the hospital also received towels from the Modern Priscilla club.
Lucille Hendricks a 20 year old Bloomington resident suffered severe burns when a gasoline stove exploded at Ray Hendricks residence northeast of the city. Her sister Helen 14 used a coat to shield her and save her life. Lucille’s clothing was largely burned and Mrs Hendricks was bedridden at the time.
A special committee of the Greencastle Council of Clubs advocates enforcing a state pure food law requiring food handlers to sterilize utensils. They cite impracticality of boiling and endorse a chemical solution from the State Board of Health using sulfur soda lime and chlorinated lime with water, plus a rinse. The proposal notes prescriptions for dairymen and mentions alternatives such as Fisher solution for eating houses and soft drink stands.
Truman Davis a 20 year old from Arkansas was fined 1 on a reckless driving charge by Mayor W N Denman in city court this morning. He was arrested by State Policeman John Early about 10 o clock after attempting to pass another car on a hill west of Manhattan without 500 clearance as required by law. Davis said he and a companion were en route to Detroit seeking work with only a few dollars between them and a finance company holding a lien on the car.
The Putnam County Council of Religious Education holds its annual convention at Roachdale Methodist Church on Sunday May 18 starting at 2 15 PM and continuing through the day. Speakers include Rev Victor L Raphael of Greencastle Presbyterian Church and Edward R Bartlett from DePauw University.
Mostly cloudy conditions persist tonight and Friday with showers expected in the southern portion. Temperatures show little change across the period.
Lawrence Wells, 26, was fatally wounded by Kendallville Police Chief Ora Bawyer and Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Magnuson while fleeing during a burglary arrest attempt. Wells had registered under a false name at a boarding house with Teresa Cramer, wife of Bert Cramer, who is in prison for embezzlement.
Weir Cook of Curtis Flying Field planned a 14 passenger all metal Ford Air-Drane visit to Greencastle for a demonstration. Lack of a suitable landing field forced cancellation and no municipal field is available yet.
DePauw sophomore Miss Clarice Carmony of Alpha Gamma Delta was struck on Martinsville street near Locust by a car driven by Samuel Clapp. She received bruises but injuries were not serious. she was carried briefly on the bumper and then thrown to the pavement. Dr. W M McGaughey treated her at the scene.
