Charles J. Arnold describes Ott Webb’s missing state basketball ticket en route to Indianapolis for the State Basketball tournament. The piece notes a playful prank, a plan to attend games at Butler Field House, and advance room arrangements. It mentions preparing notices for 1931 I H. S. A. A. basketball year and a commissioner’s address for ticket applications.
Thomas Green Jr. 2, of 809 North Alabama Street, was struck by two cars in the 700 block and died in city hospital. Laverne Snider 26 of 1634 College Avenue faces assault and battery tech charges. Fred Cummings of Benton Sr. arrested on a similar count. Witnesses say the boy ran into the street as cars moved slowly. The mother was located in Noblesville after a radio broadcast.
Rev Cecil Franklin state evangelist for Christian churches will conduct a revival at Manhattan Christian church starting Sunday March 16 with services at 11 am and 7 pm and nightly at 7 30 except Monday. Sermon Sunday morning Hell's Cry For a Savior and the evening theme Keeping God's His Place. Franklin born Greencastle and noted gospel preacher. county churches plan to attend as part of a county-wide outreach led by Fred Belles of Russellville. A men’s dinner is set for Thursday April 10 at Greencastle church.
Dr Todor Eckhardt a young Hungarian leader will present two talks at DePauw University in Greencastle. Saturday at 8 pm in Longden hall the talk on The United States of Europe will be given to an open Cosmopolitan and International Relations club meeting. Sunday at 615 pm in the Little Theater the speaker will address the Young People on Seeds of a New War. Prof Manhart helped bring him to campus.
Partly cloudy to cloudy tonight and Saturday with possible showers in the extreme south portion. Temperatures slowly rise Saturday, with warmer conditions in the north tonight.
Ernest Stoner relays a letter from his brother-in-law Lynch of Laramie Wyoming describing Jack Lynch’s single shot antelope kill at 629 yards. Hunters present confirmed the distance a distance of over a quarter of a mile. Jack Lynch formerly lived in Greencastle with his parents and is remembered by many.
Indiana fans packed Indianapolis as 16 teams began the 1930 Hoosier basketball finals at Butler University field house. Ticket scalpers hawked seats amid a split crowd with many outside seeking entry while authorities faced calls for an investigation into ticket distribution and the disputed leadership of IHSAA Commissioner Arthur L. Trester. Eight games scheduled for today and seven for Saturday.
Earl Smith of Indianapolis, a driver for A and C Trucking, was fined $1 and costs by Mayor W L Denman in city court for driving with an improper license. He pulled a loaded truck and trailer for Kroger with a 1929 rear plate and no front plate, arrested on East Washington Street. A mirror violation was not pressed.
The daughter of Prof and Mrs BE Bartlett of 723 East Washington Street broke her right forearm yesterday afternoon while roller skating. She was standing still when skates slipped and fell injuring both bones just above the wrist.
The Roachdale school has been asked to supply music for the general teachers institute in Greencastle on March 22. The Boyer Sextette will likely provide the entertainment for the event.
The Greencastle Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at the Country Club elected B Havens as president succeeding Harry Allan. New directors chosen were Charles McGaughey A G Brown and Dr William Blanchard plus holdovers Harry Allan John Cannon C B Havens Joe Bamberger Gray Potter and Fred O Mair. The group aims to attract a national veterans hospital and an emergency airfield to Greencastle.
Williamson aged about 37 died at 2 this morning of tuberculosis at his sister Mrs Walter Nelson’s home on Madison Street. Survived by father William Williamson sister Mrs Clarence Shillings brother Ivan Williamson. Funeral Sunday 2 PM at Nelsons 312 North Madison Street with burial in Little Walnut Cemetery Clinton Township. Miss Amanda Browning visits from Muncie. Christian church choir rehearses Saturday 7 PM.
Mrs Martha A Nicholso Smythe observed her 90th birthday anniversary by preparing dinner for her children and grandchildren. Miss Hele Broadstreet Hazel Vermillion Irma Grubb Ruth Post Laura Towne Kathleen Campbell Ann Cannon are Greencastle students in the music recital at De Pauw tonight. A field fire destroyed a great deed of property on the farm of Frank Garrett and Mrs Drew Alspaugh near Fillmore yesterday.
Floyd Miller county agent announced more Farmer's meetings to be held in Greencastle High School's agriculture department gymnasium. The initial session Tuesday will cover sheep production with Dr. T. A. Sigler discussing common sheep troubles and Ed Crosby on feeding western lambs. John Robe and Frank Hartmay are on the program.
The Vitaphone system is installed at the Voncastle theatre with mechanics arriving from the factory. Installation should not affect weekend shows. Opening date for the first talking picture is likely Sunday March 23 with manager Walter Bidwell arranging a top class feature. After installation, daily matinees will be shown at the Vancastle and weekends at the Granada, with further announcements to follow.
Dr. A H Moore, 78, of Clinton Falls, suffered a stroke about 10 this morning and is in critical condition with paralysis on his left side. He is father of Miss Lela Moore, a teacher in the Third Ward school.
Mrs Henry Krehl and Mrs Faynie Rodeheaver were in Lafayette today for a Methodist church missionary conference.
Graded tests of outgoing mail clerks on Thursday at the Greencastle post office show a perfect 100 percent by Clarence Hollick and two near perfect scores of 99.45 by F. D. McKeehan and 99.28 by Ernest Rader. O K Karjes and Gibson supervised the exam, with Karnes noting Hollick as the district’s second 100 in the period.
Frank Cox formerly of Lena died Wednesday at his Indianapolis home from high blood pressure and complications. He was born in Clay County and lived near Lena for years before moving to Indianapolis. Survived by widow and three children, also father W. S. Cox and stepmother of Lena, and brothers T. C. Cox of Greencastle and Theodore Cox of Indianapolis. Short services to be held at the home Friday morning with remains sent to Terre Haute for burial.
Brick Chapel holds Sunday school at 10 a m and morning worship at 11. Epworth League at 6 50 p m and evening services at 7 30. Minister is Charles R Query. Funeral for Mrs Thomas Lisby will be Sunday at 11 at the Fillmore Methodist Church, Rev O H Sherrill in charge. Interment in Fillmore Cemetery. Sam Thomas of Fillmore diagnosed with mouth disease after all teeth were pulled.
Greencastle's Purple and Gray set to leave at 4 30 for Capital City and a 8 30 game against Anderson in the first round of the state finals. Ten players, led by Crawley Tobin and Stone, travel with Art Gross back in action.
Mrs. John Bundy of Amo died Friday at 2:00 AM. She is the mother of Earl Bundy who lives on West Berry Street in Amo. The funeral is set for 10:30 Sunday morning at the Baptist Church of Amo.
Gladys May Knauer infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Knauer died Thursday afternoon near Greencastle after stomach trouble. The one month eight day old baby was buried today at Mt Pleasant cemetery.
