SAY by Charles J. Arnold criticizes Governor Leslie for spending 15000 of public funds to re furnish the mansion claiming it aims to be homelike. The piece mocks the extravagance while noting other political stances and a Robin observed outside.
Rev. Henry McClain of Bloomington delivered the convocation address at Terre Haute Normal on Wednesday. President Oxnam of DePauw was unable to speak due to illness. Teo. McClarg formerly of DePauw but now with Indiana University since last fall. his daughter Hazel studies at Terre Haute Normal.
Fred Donaldson, 19, of 1652 Rast Raymond Street Indianapolis, was arrested Wednesday in the Bainbridge filling station robbery last November 6. Three unmasked bandits took S91 from attendant Claude Seabee. Dopaldrey, a confessed member of Everett Perry's gang, and Ralph Baines, 22, of 13 East Market Street, Indianapolis, admitted the Bainbridge raid and other robberies statewide.
Mostly unsettled conditions with possible rain or snow tonight. Colder during Saturday with a slight cool down and mixed precipitation chances.
Government officials call Red Thursday a flop after nationwide reports. Riotous demonstrations occurred in New York Washington Detroit Boston Cleveland Seattle with many arrests but overall the day went off more peacefully than expected.
Authorities probe the killing of Alonzo Horton known as Jack a 52 year old with a police record and ties to liquor and narcotic cases. His body found alive after a drive by and dumped in a strawberry patch four miles southwest of Lafayette. Coroner ordered autopsy as investigation widens. Also note the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Alexander of Limedale at home.
George B. Fleming a 50 year old Shelbyville Indiana and New York City attorney was jailed after federal grand jury indicted him for using the mails to defraud. He allegedly collected about 15 000 to aid the Edwards heirs in pursuing claims to Trinity Church real estate in New York City. The government says heirs paid Fleming 25 each and he failed to account.
Dr. Tibor Eckhardt, a leading Hungarian journalist and statesman, will visit DePauw University to speak on March 15 under the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He formerly led Hungary's Press Department and served as Interior Minister and chair of Foreign Relations, with role in postwar financial and commercial negotiations.
Judge James P. Hughes of Putnam county circuit court will speak at the First M E church in Brazil at 6 30 PM Tuesday March 11. He will lecture on The Trial of Jesus and expects a strong turnout from the Men's Brotherhood.
The Putnam County Bar Association adopted resolutions mourning Benjamin F. Corwin a long time member who died March 3 1980 in Greencastle. Corwin born December 4 1859 near Bainbridge studied at DePauw University and practiced law with several partners in Green castle. He married Christy Jane McCullough May 15 1910 and was active in community affairs. Jacob Fite Kenneth Eitel and Arnest Trout attended the Florists Short Course closing session at Purdue University in Lafayette.
Rev. J. G. Campbell purchased the R. E. Thomas property at Arlington and Seminary for 3000 dollars. Mrs. Clara Lammers rented the Lawrence DeMotte house on Spring avenue. Citizens of the southern county petitioned the County Commissioners for a bridge across the river on the Putnam and Owen county line.
A devastating tornado sweeping through Mississippi Arkansas and Louisiana left six dead and over fifty injured. It originated in Northwestern Mississippi and damaged Sun Flower Bolivar and Humphreys counties before hitting Gregory Ark and Harris Louisiana. Damages exceeded 200000 with extensive hospital care for the injured.
The Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting Monday at 6 30 PM at the Country Club with Harry Allen as president presiding. An officers election will take place and FP Smith Incor sales manager of Lone Star Cement Co will be the principal speaker.
Walter Campbell announced he sold the old Besser Mill elevator property to the Putnam County Farm Bureau Co operative Association. Possession will be given March 17 and Campbell will run his feed and fence business from his Fillmore store and a temporary building near the elevator site.
Winter visitors exceed expectations at McCormick's Creek Canyon State Park with Richard Lieber noting unusually high attendance. Since Mrs. Smart took over management the park hosts large civic and business club gatherings from Spencer and Bloomington, rivaling summer rates. Mrs. Smartt oversees exceptional table service.
Sam Michell was arrested in Bainbridge by Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan on a public intoxication charge filed by Russellville Town Marshal George W. Potter. At a waiver arraignment Michell pleaded not guilty and a trial was set for March 22 in Putnam circuit court. Potter alleges Michell was intoxicated on February 22 on Russellville streets.
A county seed corn judging contest sponsored by the First National Bank and the county agent opened today for Putnam County farmers. Fifty ears are on display at the bank. competitors estimate which ears will grow and vie for five prizes, including a bushel and pecks of Woorburns yellow dent seed corn. The rag doll germination test will be used, with a public review by Floyd Miller on March 22.
The condition of Hillis Shoptaugh son of Mr and Mrs Frank Shoptaugh living on east Seminary street in Indiana polis is reported as good by his physician at Robert F E Lane Hospital. He did not have as good a night but today his general state remains as good as could be expected.
Greencastle schools resume Monday morning following a week of recess due to a meningitis quarantine. Public gatherings and movie screenings will also resume as no new meningitis cases are reported.
Dr. W. M. McGaughey confirms throat cultures from meningitis exposure were negative. All tests showed no carriers.
Greencastle hopes to win the regional title as Art Grose is out of the lineup. The Tiger Cubs aim for victory after a defeat to Clinton during the regular season while a sixty mile drive rallies fans.
The Herald will post Attica Tourney results and all game scores by halves on the Herald Bulletin board. Fans can watch the bulletin board or call Phone 65 to obtain scores.
Greencastle travels to Attica for a regional semifinal with high hopes of reaching the Indiana state finals in Indianapolis next weekend. Principal Frank N. Jones delivered tickets and schedules to Attica officials as Greencastle aims to upset Clinton or be joined by Clinton in the late game if both win. Art Gross misses the lineup due to illness, with Ellis stepping in, and a large Greencastle delegation plans to travel over the 60 mile cement route via Rockville.
The final ballots for the Literary Digest Prohibition Poll were mailed from New York to Greencastle and nearby areas and should reach local post offices within days. Early indications show strong national interest, with first returns due in the March 15 issue of the magazine.
