Purdue has won nine straight Conference basketball games after an undefeated football season. With one game left against Chicago at Lafayette Saturday, the Boilers are poised to repeat the football team’s flawless conference record. A notable surprise is promised for Greencastle about Thursday.
Putnam Circuit Court heard a $1000 damage suit filed by City Marshal Otto Dobbs against Vale Thomas and son Bernard Thomas. Dobbs says he was struck while signaling a car on Walnut Street near the fire station on January 31, injuring his hips ribs and chest.
Officials discontinue all assembly meetings while classes continue. No chapel services or mass gatherings are held as precaution against meningitis spread.
The Rotary Club cancelled its Wednesday noon luncheon as a health precaution. Many other organizations also canceled their regular meetings scheduled for this week.
John Higgins Harrison 62 publisher of the Commercial News at Danville and a DePauw University alumnus died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital Miami Florida after a stay for ptomaine poisoning. He had gone to Miami December 28 to recover from a relapse and had been active in Republican circles in Moss. He led the Illinois Press Association in 1925 and headed the Leland Daily Press Association in 1927 and 1928.
Putnam County collected 42221.96 as its state gasoline tax share for the fiscal year ending March 1, with each county getting 16840. The county’s total included 5291.72 extra on mileage, yielding the highest regional total. The city of Greencastle received 2186.69.
Duzer Du's dramatic fraternity at DePauw University stages Seventh Heaven this weekend at the Little Theater. The three act play offers the finest character work and a challenging setting as it unfolds Friday and Saturday nights.
Seven high achieving seniors at DePauw University were named Rector Fellows valued at 1200 each to pursue postgraduate study in the United States or abroad. Recipients include Herbert Carter James Funston Winston Hole Robert Kimberlin Russell Rosenkrans and Helen Cox. Cox will defer until 1981 32 and others plan graduate study at Illinois Munchen Columbia or Yale and more with fields spanning organic chemistry German literature international law physics and Latin literature.
Perry Wright was found dead at his home five miles north west of Greencastle. He was 74 and had suffered heart disease in recent years. He was born in Madison township in 1856, married Lizzie Talbott with two children Raymond and Prof. William Wendell, and later wed Josie Hathaway in 1909. Surviving relatives include three grandchildren and a sister. Funeral services will be at Brick Chapel Church, with interment in Brick Chapel cemetery.
Winners announced by President Oxnam based on the DePauw University campus essay contest on Simpson Foundation lectures. First prize went to Wayne Shumaker Indianapolis for "My Personal Reactions to the Simpson Lectures" with $50, followed by Miss Orian Acree Ic elcastle second for $25, Frank Cole Columbia City third for $15, Max It Bowman Greencastle fourth for $10, and Paul L Lyons Indianapolis fifth for $5. Lectures were Feb 5–7 by Rev Oscar Thomas Olson on Some Validities and Realities, to be printed as a book soon.
Indiana University glee club performed a chapel program in Meharry Hall on Monday. Morning class times were shortened to fit the concert. Prof D D Nye directed the program which ranged from classical pieces to humorous skits. William Arbuckle accompanied at the piano for several numbers and for Bert Whaley the baritone soloist.
Sheriff Edward Eiteljorge went to Evansville this morning to take Herbert Terry living south of Cloverdale who has been recommitted to the Southern Hospital for the Insane.
Funeral service for Ella Bowen aged 21 was held this afternoon at 2 o clock at the Lakin Funeral Home with Rev C Howard Taylor in charge. Interment followed at Forest Hill cemetery. Pallbearers named Lloyd Houck David Houck Eugene Keller Frank DeVaney Fred Masten and Frank Vaughn. Bowen died Sunday at her brother Albert Landes east Seminary street from paralysis.
Reports from Robert Long hospital Indianapolis on Hillis Shoptaugh son of Mr and Mrs Frank Shoptaugh ill with cerebro spinal meningitis say his condition is encouraging and better than when he was taken to the hospital Sunday.
Private funeral services were held in Rushville for Mrs Chiaude Webb formerly Edith Clarkson daughter of Mr and Mrs W F Clarkson. She died Monday noon at Indianapolis city hospital from cerebro spinal meningitis and her body was moved from Hisey Titus Undertaking in Indianapolis to her parents home in Rushville before burial in the local cemetery. Prior to her marriage she worked as a nurse at Putnam county hospital.
The Father and Son Banquet of the Methodist church was postponed due to the ban on public gatherings. The event had been planned by the Brotherhood and now waits for a new date to be announced.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle the Tin Plate Mill was announced for sale with Thad Peck appointed as receiver. Also noted were ill health of Roy Hillis and his wife from oyster poisoning, and Earl Ellis hosting friends at their sugar camp west of town.
Mostly fair tonight with some cloudiness. Warmer conditions expected Wednesday, especially in the western and southern portions.
A missionary convention at Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in Lafayette will feature three DePauw affiliated bishops among a notable speaker lineup. Bishops Edgar Blake Raymond J Wade and Francis J McConnell will discuss world missions and regional church work as pastors and laypeople gather from the Northwest Indiana Conference under the Methodist Board of Foreign Missions. Wade will speak on Methodism in Scandinavia.
Dessie C Callahan of Chestnut Street filed for divorce in Putnam Circuit Court Monday from Albert Callahan a Greencastle merchant police. She alleges cruel inhumane treatment and non support. They married April 1922 separated December last year. They have two children Barbara Sue four and Albert 16 months. She seeks custody of the children and $1000 alimony. He earns 100 to 125 dollars a month.
Funeral services for Benjamin F Corwin longtime attorney who died Monday morning at his Locust street home will be held Wednesday at 4 30 oclock at the residence Rev C Howard Taylor pastor of the Methodist church and Dr Salem B Towne will lead with interment in Forest Hill cemetery Pallbearers include C H Barnaby Judge James P Hughes Fred L O Hair and others Friends from out of town visiting are Rev and Mrs Paul L Benedict Fort Wayne Mrs Halford C Udell Indianapolis Ms Mary Corwin Indianapolis Call at the home tonight 7 to 9 for viewing
Washington March 4 Former Chief Justice William Howard Taft remains in a helpless state though his family is hopeful for short term improvement. Robert Taft left Washington for Cincinnati after telling reporters his father was much better than last week and could live for some time if no unexpected decline occurs. Doctors Clayton and Hagner continued cautious bulletins noting no change and the nurse reported a fairly quiet night with no new developments.
Lola Wysong of Greencastle was granted a divorce from John Paul Wysong by Judge Edgar A. Rice. The suit moved from Putnam to Parke to Montgomery counties. They wed March 11 1922 and separated September 1929. She cited cruelty and excessive drinking and was awarded custody of a minor daughter with $440 support.
Obituary notes the death of Benjamin F Corwin a long trusted Greencastle leader admired by Rotary members and community colleagues. Resolutions by the Putnam County bar association and many friends honor his service to others and his quiet influential work to promote younger leaders.
