Mr and Mrs Cedric Noble believed aboard the lake steamer that turned over in the Chicago River this morning during a picnic of Western Electric Co employees. Telegram to Dr Tucker confirmed they are safe and accounted for.
Reports tie DePauw graduates John Binford and Hugh Price to the Eastland tragedy on the Chicago river. Two thousand Western Electric workers rode the steamer when it capsized amid rescue efforts as crews fought to save passengers. News confirms varying death estimates and ongoing search efforts.
Eyewitnesses recount a chaotic capsize as the Eastland overturned on the Chicago river. Captain Pedersen cites 15 to 20 dead while relatives claim at least 100 drowned or trapped below decks. Police mobilized, hospitals crowded, and over two thousand passengers were aboard the vessel.
Joseph Friend answers call as death comes to an aged German resident of this city on Friday evening at 7 15. After a short illness he came to Green Castle in 1864 and was engaged in gardening and horticultural work. Three children survive.
Joseph Friend a Greencastle gardener and respected resident died Friday night at 7 15 after a long illness at his North Madison street home. Brights disease caused death. He was born in Alsace Lorraine in 1831 and emigrated to the United States in 1864. Survived by three children John Friend Mrs Fred Johns and Mrs Alice Ruark and his wife had died nine years earlier. Funeral Sunday at 2 30 from his home with Rev Thomas Younger officiating. Interment Forest Hill cemetery. I O F lodge No 348 will conduct the ser vice with pallbearers Alfred Hirt J W Shaver Walter J Brown William R Callahan Holmes Craver and Charles H Meikel.
The Putnam County Board of Charities reports the county house is splendidly kept and lauds the administration of John Clark Superintendent of Farm. Many improvements have been made under his leadership.
On July 21 the county house was inspected by two board members. Forty five inmates were present then, with twelve women. The institution housed sixty eight residents in winter and had reached capacity previously. Mr. and Mrs. Clark have managed fifteen months with twelve deaths, six inmates declared insane, one epileptic, four feeble minded, one almost blind, and eight over eighty. The 205 acre farm grows corn, wheat, oats, and clover. livestock includes cows, calves, a span of mules, mares, a colt, and one hundred hens. Inmates aid with outside work while two helpers support the superintendent and his wife assists inside. Bathrooms, closets, and other improvements were praised. a schoolhouse was repurposed as a tool-house and a force pump installed for eight dollars. Ol Gardner earned commendation for a flower garden, fence, and benches. Total improvements cost 1823 dollars. Gas piping is recommended as next upgrade. coal oil lamps remain in use. The jail visit noted seven inmates currently held for court, with a note the piece continues on page four.
