Greencastle golfers lose to Crawfordsville in Nassau scoring

Greencastle and Crawfordsville teams met on the Greencastle links for a Nassau scoring golf match. Crawfordsville entered eighteen players and prevailed 31 to 17. A flag day tournament is planned for Monday July 4 with partners, flags at Hamilton's Book Store, and a 25 cent entrance fee.

Iowa Prisoner Sought in Capture of Escaped Man

Homer Smith of the Iowa State Penitentiary prepared to return John Martin alias John McCarty from Indiana to Iowa. Martin, who escaped four years ago, faces seven years remaining plus an additional five for the escape. Gov Warren McCray pardoned him to enable the transfer. Federal authorities located him in Leavenworth by fingerprint records.

George Rumbarger Civil War veteran dies near Greencastle

George M. Rumbarger, 77, died at his home four and a half miles east of Greencastle near midnight Friday. Born in Pennsylvania November 22, 1843, he served in Company F, Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania. Survived by wife Nancy E. Rumbarger, a sister Miss Kate Rumbarger, a granddaughter Della McFarlane, four grandsons, and eight great great grandchildren. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. at the residence with Rev. L D Dody of Greencastle officiating. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery.

Dempsey Wins in the Fourth Round Over Carpentier

In Jersey City on July 2, Jack Dempsey retained the World Heavyweight title by knocking out French challenger Georges Carpentier in the fourth round. A right to the jaw opened Carpentier to a knockout and he never recovered, despite a brief comeback attempt and a late rally.

Traction car strikes auto near Greencastle injures none

A traction car hit a car returning to Greencastle from Reelsville at stop 35 southwest of town. Mrs F C Tilden and four others escaped serious injury when Mr Tilden steered into a steep embankment to avoid a direct crash. The auto front was crushed but all occupants were unhurt. the crossing view is obstructed and the motorman whistled too late.

Washington July 1 The Senate adopted a motion for Fourth of July adjournment tonight until Tuesday The House will have a brief session tomorrow and adjourn until Wednesday as officials mark Independence Day with a holiday recess.
