Crawley and Moffett each scored 14 as DePauw defeated Franklin 42 to 29 on the local floor. Crawley provided sharp shooting and floor play while Moffett added key baskets in the win, capping a strong team performance against the Baptists.
Franklin reserves overcame a 20 12 halftime deficit to beat DePauw 34 25. DePauw surged early, led 17 7, but Franklin gained momentum after intermission, with four players scoring four points and three players six each. Henderson Brown and Virt stood out for Franklin while Longden and Wilson led DePauw.

David W. Campbell, 86, Civil War veteran and long time Coatesville businessman, died at his home. Born in Jennings County, he served in the 43d Indiana Infantry, later joined the regular army during the West Indian uprising, and returned to Coatesville where he and his son Allen ran hardware, furniture, and undertaking businesses. He was active in multiple lodges and churches, survived by three children and six grandchildren, with funeral at his home Friday at 2 p.m.
Irene Bradtke files for divorce from Charles H. Bradtke alleging cruelty and inhumane treatment. Married September 13 1919 the couple lived together until January 7 1980. She claims he is quarrelsome and jealous and has choked kicked her and degraded her with insults during anger.
A rumor of spinal meningitis at a high school proved false as authorities said Tuesday a student became ill but precautions were in place and no case was found. Pupils were urged to use antiseptic mouth washes as a precautionary measure.
The Democratic primary closed with McCabe winning representative, Airhart auditor, Hamrick clerk, Wood recorder, Dobbs assessor. Contested results received by county chairman Alec Lane with tellers Denman and Curtis. Uncontested nominees were Miller treasurer Stroube sheriff Lane surveyor Gillespie coroner and commissioners Gardner and Houck.
Lincoln Wimmer, Indiana Taxpayers Association field representative and appointee to a state commission on school finances, spoke at the Rotary Club noon meeting. He outlined Putnam county tax data showing corporations bear a large share of local taxes, and noted railroads and utility firms as major taxpayers. Gwinn Ensign joined the club, and others from DePauw and Wabash spoke as guests. Charles McGaughey, finishing mayoral term, received an ordinary calendar as a parting gesture.
Dr. J B P Holland of Indiana University issues a warning about an outbreak of spinal meningitis in Indiana. He urges strict hygiene, use of antiseptic sprays and mouthwash, avoiding shared atomizers, fresh air and warm clothing, hand washing, coughing etiquette, and postponing weekend trips until the epidemic is controlled.
The First Christian Church plans its annual business meeting and officer election on Thursday evening. A 6:20 start includes a pitch-in supper and social hour. members and friends should bring food. After supper, officers are elected and department reports are read.
Greencastle Indiana Legion members plan a membership drive to strengthen support for securing the Veterans Hospital unit. A meeting at Wilbur Donner’s office is set for Thursday at 7 30 p m to urge veterans and others to attend and lift leadership to at least six hundred members.
Milton Brown and others from the Tadiana Kiwanis district attend the state Kiwanis meeting at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. The morning session features the installation of eleven district officers. A Kiwanis wing dedication at Kilby Memorial Hospital is set for January 19 with a cabinet meeting planned at noon.
Mary Jane Allen aged 67 a lifelong Plainfield resident died at her home in Plainfield Ind of a heart attack. She is survived by her husband Joseph Allen one son and eight stepchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Conservative Friends church of which she was a birthright member.
County commissioners awarded contracts to Woodburn Printing Co of Terre Haute for bound records and to The Herald for stationery and blanks, following Tuesday meeting.
Crown Prince Umberto wed Princess Marie Jose in a historic ceremony at the Pauline Chapel inside the Quirinal Palace. The event drew kings and princes from Europe while guards policed the streets amid plots foiled near the palace.
