Permanent councils of defense are named in all townships. Branch organizations of county council will have immediate charge of all work growing out of the war. Chairmen appointed, but other officers will be elected.
Seven members named per township with one woman on each council. C C Hurst and Mrs N C O'Hair announce the nationwide push to organize township groups to handle Liberty Loan, Y M C A campaigns, food conservation, war savings, and thrift stamps, under county council oversight. Meetings set for Floyd and Madison townships with others to follow.
Bishop Herbert Welch of Korea warned that Asia will not accept Christian leadership without American teachers physicians and preachers. In a Meharry Hall lecture series finale he outlined East Asian needs, opportunities for evangelization, and the church’s struggle against ignorance vice and degradation. Lantern slides illustrated the mission fields and calls for U S churches to act.
DePauw’s spring athletic schedule was announced by athletic director E. C. Buss. Baseball games include Indiana, Franklin, Wabash, Rose Poly, Purdue, and possible Kentucky road trips with dates from April to May. Track slate lists Indiana, Rose Poly, Wabash, and Franklin meets through May. Section 4 of the Christian church meets Thursday at 2 PM at Mrs. Harry Talbot’s home.
The Methodist Hospital board of trustees voted to adopt the committee's plan to purchase Hope Hospital in Fort Wayne. The nine members of the committee visited Fort Wayne a week earlier to inspect the hospital facilities.
Washington reports food administration urges canners to store canned corn peas tomatoes string beans and salmon for war use until further notice. W Shelton Williams to replace Huffman on local fire department Friday morning. his prior sixteen years of service noted. Will Graham of State Guard receives requisition blanks for uniforms. unit designated Company G 1st Regiment with headquarters at Covington Indiana.
The city will receive 500 from Ezra Champer and Lawrence Athey for the period the road roller was away. City attorney C. T. Peck and Councilman Roy Abrams arranged the compromise. The roller will be returned in a few days as the claim ordinance proceeds. The council also passed the related ordinance listing multiple small accounts.
The Food Administration advises replacing animal fats with vegetable oils and avoiding butter except for leftovers. It promotes saving lard by cooking less fried foods and favoring boiling and broiling, using leftover fats in cooking or making soap. If each American saves one third of an ounce daily, enough fat can be shipped to support soldiers, sailors, and Allies.
Putnam County farmers can place orders for carload shipments of 1917 crop seed corn. County agent Foots is now collecting orders to supply planting stock to local farms.
Survey shows Putnam county seed shortages with farmers asking County Agent Fouts about seed growth. Ear tests using sand box or rag doll testers offered at Greencastle high school by Prof Royce. old corn priced at 7.50 per bushel crib run, carload orders require 700 bushels. Also notes on Garfield high school basketball at Browning Hall and upcoming district tourney, annual staff book sales, and junior minstrel cast announcements.
Coach Buss drives the basket ball squad in prep for Purdue on Friday and Rose Poly plus Earlham next week. Purdue has won four straight after an opening loss, with Royse set to play and Bastian sidelined for tests. A Friday preliminary at seven features Bainbridge area schools against local stars, and the Rose Poly game moves to March 4 from February 28.
Relatives of men already in U.S. military service may appear before local boards and file affidavits to avoid reporting as delinquents. Boards will place them in Class 5, not send names to the adjutant general. Major Baltzell forwarded the question to Washington. the reply: Yes. Also notes rising Union services with Sunday meetings at the Presbyterian church this week.
The DePauw scholastic standings for 1908-09 to 1916-17 show sororities outranking fraternities with Kappa Kappa Gamma and Alpha Chi Omega on top. Alpha Phi and Kappa Alpha Theta follow as other leading organizations, while last rites were held for William Overstreet in Forest Hill cemetery with Rev. Kirkpatrick officiating.
Robbers conducted another nighttime raid targeting Grogan and Miller’s Grocery, with money and mercandise missing. The incident follows a string of similar thefts affecting multiple stores in the area. Local authorities are investigating and seeking information from the public.
Robbers targeted Grogan and Miller grocery on East Washington, stealing three dollars, three sacks of flour valued at four fifty, and other goods. Entry was gained by boring an east door hole and breaking a window light. Patrolman Tom Sewell found no clue and suspects worked late at night. Tools used were recovered from a gutter behind the store and linked to a local lumber yard.
Wreck crews cleared the right of way three miles east of Greencastle as trains ran again. Only two of twenty four derailed cars were rerailed that morning and moved toward shops. The rest remained piled along the track. days may pass before all are repaired. No injuries were reported.
C. W. Otis of Terre Haute will assume the Green Castle post as new manager of Putnam Electric, after serving as manager of the Western Indiana Utilities Company of Brazil in recent years.
C W Otis of Terre Haute has been appointed manager of the Putnam Electric Company serving Greencastle and Cloverdale. He will move to Greencastle immediately. John G Bryson remains to assist until Otis is fully established.
W. P. Zenor reports his grandson Morris Skelton of near Reelsville has arrived in France with the Sixth Engineer training division of the U. S. Army. The note appears in the Brazil Times. The Penelope Club plans a meeting tomorrow afternoon at the surgical dressings rooms for work.
