Lilienthal easily wins the state oratorical contest, adding another victory to a long string by representatives of the local institution in the event. The DePauw team also notches a win in the same competition.
DePauw's David E. Lilienthal captured first with 92.14 points in Indianapolis at Central Christian church. Notre Dame's John A. Lemmer took second, Manly W. Immel of Wabash third, Flora Mabel Hayes of Franklin fourth as seven colleges competed with speeches on topics from independence to world peace and the mission of the Jew.
A list tracks DePauw University entrants in state and interstate oratorical contests listing contestants such as David Eli Lilienthal and John A. Lemmer with scores, plus other participants from Notre Dame Wabash Franklin Earlham Hanover Butler and more through 1917 Albert Freeman.
DePauw wins 48 to 38 over Wabash in a tight dual meet at Crawfordsville. Capt. Jones leads with three firsts totaling 15 points as DePauw and Wabash each take four firsts with one tied. Upcoming outdoor rematch scheduled later in the season.
Indiana's two major parties plan a joint effort for the Liberty Loan drive. Governor Goodrich and Will H. Wade joined Will H. Hays and Charles A. Greathouse to invite state committee members and county chairmen to a State House meeting on Tuesday at 2 PM, open to the public.
The Greencastle union service adds Mrs Daisy Barr of Indianapolis to speak on Armenian relief replacing Rev Marshall. A public meeting Sunday night aims to inform locals about the two million Christians suffering under Turkish rule and to raise funds. War Savings urges thrift and current savings be used to buy stamps.
Eighty five percent of 227 pupils at the local high school own war savings or thrift stamps. Total stamps sold 72 W S S and 474 thrift stamps valued at 415.76. Seniors lead with 100 percent ownership. freshmen show 69 percent. Every pupil belongs to the Red Cross and will become a stamp holder.
Saturday notes report normal attendance with some absent due to unavoidable work. Carl Allen re entered school as his father improves. G H 8 basketball misses center in Amo game. Teachers Training Class moves to 8 pm at the city library due to a University lecture. The Thomas Buggy Company versus O A Modisitt fronts a circuit court foreclosure complaint.
Mrs. Daisy Barr will address a Sunday evening union meeting at the Baptist Church. The talk aims to support Armenians and Syrians and will focus on relief efforts and aid.
The Food Administration appeals to households to save fats, noting fats heat and energize soldiers and that butter is scarce in Europe due to limited dairy feed. It warns glycerine uses from fats fuel explosives and urges saving at least one third of an ounce daily to aid ammunition supply.
The G H 5 quintet was beaten by Amo, 26 to 21, on the local floor. Local second team easily defeated Clinton Center.
The Amo boys edged Greencastle 26 21 in a hard fought high school basketball game. Shirley led Amo with five field goals and Funson added five while the Greencastle lineup featured Handy and Harris with four and a strong defensive effort by Black and O Neal. The match, short by four minutes due to a car delay, showcased late rallying by Amo and a spirited Clinton Center win by Greencastle’s second team earlier.
Bloomington postmaster and Blooming-ton World owner Oscar Cravens spoke to the Democratic Editorial Association in Indianapolis praising Greencastle and editors. He recounted a Bedford tale where a tombstone read Here lies a lawyer and an honest man, noting a lawyer and editor in one grave.
Frances Murphy died at age 67 at 3 30 am Saturday in the home of her daughter Mrs Earl Hill on Locust street after a week of illness. Funeral Monday at 9 am from the Catholic church with burial in Forest Hill cemetery. She was born February 14 1851 in Sedalia Illinois and had lived in Greencastle since moving from Memphis Missouri and Indianapolis. She leaves four children Lawrence Murphy Mrs Earl Hill George Murphy and Albert Murphy. She joined St Pauls Catholic church after moving to the city and remained faithful to attending services despite illness.
With Friday’s work nearly complete the physical examinations for draft men in the county are finished. Only a few Class 1 men remain to report and be examined in the next days. The local selection board expects to announce how many Class 1 men were found fit for general military service.
The Beamer missionary lectures begin Sunday at 3 PM in Meharry Hall with Korea as the topic. Four lectures follow on successive evenings at 7 PM Monday through Wednesday. Bishop Herbert Welch, former president of Ohio Wesleyan University, will deliver the talks as the year’s speaker.
George Stallcup of Lena died Friday morning after a prolonged illness. The former Lena postmaster was a respected community member, survived by his widow and five children.
A campaign launches in the M. E. Church seeking 3,000,008 dollars to pension retired ministers and provide for widows and orphans. Rev. Fraley of this city serves as secretary of the Northwest Conference.
The Chicago area of the Methodist Episcopal church launches a $3 million campaign to pension retired ministers and support widows and orphans. Dr. R. J. Wade is appointed manager for the North Indiana area with Bishop Thomas Nicholson leading efforts. districts like Goshen under Wade spearhead the drive, aiming to complete campaigns by the next conference session with possible deadline extension to April 1919.
A Nazarene church revival invites a large delegation for morning and afternoon services. The schedule includes a 9:30 Sunday school, a 10:45 sermon by Evangelist Harry J. Elliott, and a 2:30 gospel talk by Mrs. Phoebe Sanders. Evening services start at 7:15 with Elliott preaching.
