The forecast notes rain in the west late tonight or Saturday with a first portion of Saturday remaining unsettled. Temperatures will fall sharply across the extreme northwest region as conditions turn colder into the weekend.
John H. James attorney Dr. W. D. James and Mrs Liddie Swallen of Martinsville Ill depart by car Monday for Phoenix Ariz. They travel via Vandalia Cairo Little Rock and Dallas. In Phoenix they join Mrs W D James and son and plan to return to Greencastle with them arriving about March 20.
A free four week evening course in Home Nursing will be led by Greencastle health workers starting next week. Sessions on February 26 to March 19 cover topics from quackery in medicine to care of the sick room and patient, surgical dressing, and food with instructors from DePauw University and local staff. Sponsored by the High School Parent Teachers Association adult education and the health department of A A U W.
Emma Koehler, 45, longtime Jackson Township resident and DePauw School of Music graduate, died at home northeast of Center Point after a year of illness. Survived by brothers Herman C. and William P. Koehler. Funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Reformed Church with Rev. Huckmede officiating. Interment in St. John Cemetery.
Miss Anna Stockwell age 23 daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Stockwell of Cloverdale died Thursday at 5 PM in Putnam County Hospital after a short illness of uremic poisoning following an appendicitis operation two weeks earlier. She was moved to the hospital Tuesday and became comatose. Funeral services will be held Sunday.
The Green Castle district Latin meet, part of a statewide Indiana University extension program, brings county entrants to the high school tomorrow. Judges include DePauw University guests James Junen. Floyd Miller of Putnam County reports his coach stolen Wednesday near Manhattan. It was found abandoned and stuck in mud on a side street in Brazil. Nearby residents saw men leave the vehicle and believed they went for help. A Buick sedan belonging to Vigo county agent H. E. Abbott was also stolen nearby, likely by the same group, to continue the pursuit.
Mr and Mrs Samuel Nelson were in Greencastle on Tuesday for a D A R dinner. The Nelsons recently moved here from Greencastle Crawfordsville Journal Review
Rev. B. H. Bruner of the First Christian church announces a 10 40 am sermon for next Sunday in honor of George Washington birthday. The talk asks would Washington be proud of America today and what national life elements would cause pride or sorrow. All are invited to hear the discussion of questions vital to the nation.
Freshmen Girls Food class at the high school conducts a rat diet experiment to show how different foods influence growth and health. Four rats aged about thirty days are fed varying diets including spinach and nut oleo, brown bread with milk, white bread and coffee, and a typical American diet. Results show growth differences and health changes, with plans to adjust diets to improve the weaker rats.
In Greencastle and nearby communities Brazil Greencastle Danville and Clinton anxious over pending postmaster appointments. Phi Kappa Psi hosted a large social event while local women in the receiving line included Mrs. O Hair and Mrs. Weaver.
The DePauw University board of trustees met for a mid year session and approved starting work on a $100,000 memorial building once $75,000 is raised. Campaign led by Dr. Byron H. Wilson will begin immediately to honor former president Dr. Hillary A. Gobin who served the university long and died in 1922. Some members discussed the Mrs. Murphy charges against President Oxnam in a round table setting, but no official action was taken.
Mrs. Jerome C. Coleman, 85, was moved from her daughter’s home east of town to Putnam county hospital Friday. Her advanced age and whooping cough illness prompt officials to classify her condition as critical.
Nicholas Golha of Sullivan completed negotiations with Mrs Mark Zaharakas for the purchase of the Greek Candy Kitchen. The business closed today and will reopen under new management in about four days with remodeling planned. The new owner will offer meals, soft drinks, and operate the banquet room.
Dr Taylor will speak at the seven thirty Sunday evening service on the clamor for material success titled Reguilding the Golden Calf. Halford E Lubbccock cites the phrase. Union Student service moved to Speech Hall this week wrapping up with worship in the church.
The annual Farmers Institute for Floyd and Marion townships convened today at Fillmore high school. Speakers Vesta S. Perdue of Acton and J. P. Priggs of Middleton led the morning and afternoon sessions, with Rev. C. H. Taylor of Greencastle Methodist Church delivering a talk tonight.
Joseph M. Harrell proprietor of the Harrell department store in Bloomington died in an automobile crash near Hugoton Kansas. He had been visiting relatives in Elkhart since Christmas and was returning home alone. He is survived by his widow two children and two brothers.
William Query, a truck driver from near Quincy, sues Walter Dorsett of Putnam County for 800 dollars in Putnam Circuit Court. The suit arises from a September collision on a narrow bridge where Dorsett’s truck, driven by Wayne Dorsett, allegedly pulled aside to let a pass but sped onto the bridge and struck Query’s Chevrolet, destroying it.
On Sunday February 23 1930 Morton Community Methodist Church holds a 10 am Sunday school with Mrs Burks, 11 am worship on the topic Fire, and 7 pm evening service on Four Kinds of Soil. A quarterly conference follows March 2 at Bellmore with Dr Briggs and Rev C G Lizenby of Indianapolis as speakers.
DePauw University presents the Moan On Revue in the Little Theater with three acts and five scenes. The all student production drew a well filled house and promises further performances on Founders and Benefactors Day. The show features strong scores elaborate costumes and a final night club finale. The ensemble joined in high quality singing and dancing with encore after encore. Plans exist to tour Indiana theaters and broadcast original music on WFBM. Mrs James Albin of Ladoga visited Greencastle for a Presbyterian Woman's Circle meeting at Luetke's home.
The DePauw University board voiced strong support for President Bromley Oxnam after a clash with Electa Chase Murphy, chair of the national defense committee of the D A R B. The annual meeting also dealt with Oxnam’s dispute over alleged liberal ties and a plea for muzzling his speeches.
