A Herald interview with a local hardware dealer shows price hikes since the war began. Major increases include walking plows from 16 to 28 dollars, sulky plows 34 to 70, binders 150 to 250, wagons 85 to 126, rope 16 to 35 cents, binder twine 10 to 25 cents, corn cultivators 28 to 54, and sap buckets 1.50 to 3.40 per dozen. The dealer notes margins are narrow and mail order prices often lower.
The article notes a short age of supply driving up prices for food clothing and hardware. Orders are fulfilled at about 75 percent of requested amounts as scarcity pushes costs for stoves plows wagons and winter coats higher due to wet conditions. The overall effect is widespread price inflation.
South Bend Indiana February 21 1943 sales stations may exchange filled thrift card stamps for war savings stamps reversing an earlier ruling that only authorized agencies could exchange cards. The Indiana war savings campaign headquarters announced the change today.
Greencastle high school defeated Cloverdale 38 to 14 on the Browning floor. Carl Allen opened with a field goal as Harris R. Allen and Handy led scoring for Greencastle with strong defense by Purdy. Cloverdale struggled in the second half as substitutions and grit failed to close the gap.

The plan creates a central information registry of women's qualifications to aid civilian and war work across fields from home economics to nursing, signaling, and wireless. The registry aims to mobilize paid and volunteer women for national defense without drafting, stressing service over class.
Indianapolis February 21 Governor Goodrich and Will H. Hays formally exchanged acceptance of Hays resignation from the State Council of Defense chair. The governor praised Hays for ten months of steady leadership since the council’s organization.
The Food Administration explains the policy of shipping corn to Europe to aid Allies, noting Allies lack corn mills and ovens or corn bread practice. It adds that large corn meal shipments spoil in transit and that oats, rye, and barley require wheat to be palatable, affecting bread quality.
President H E Kurrie says the Monon railroad will restore two trains removed weeks ago about March 1. South of Greencastle residents can travel to Crawfordsville and return the same day, with freight facilities improved. The move, seen in Crawfordsville, suggests a new station for the city may soon materialize.
The Greencastle post office will operate for one hour on Friday in observance of Washington's Birthday. All windows will open at 7 and close at 8, with city and rural carriers not on routes. Local banks and city library will close. court house offices closed. most businesses remain open.
Automatic insurance for service members ended but Congress extended filing to April 12. Many men have not applied and the War Department urges immediate action. Parents in Putnam County should check if their sons have coverage in case of death.

He notes talcum powder soap Hershey bars gum and writing paper were welcome and timely for his Christmas mail. He signs as Sammy and mentions enjoying American goods though water remains a concern.
The Greencastle post office urges immediate purchase of War Savings Stamps noting prices rise March 1. During February a $5 stamp costs $4.13, with twenty stamps on a certificate totaling $82.60. Buy in February to save twenty cents and bring a full thrift card to pay thirteen cents for a stamp.
The government thermometer dipped to two degrees above zero Wednesday night triggering a coal pile strain after days of mild weather. Officials say there are no major outages yet but extended cold could deplete fuel stocks in Greensburg. Weather forecasts promise relief as sunlight aids warming.
A. V. O'Daniel, enrollment agent for Putnam county, sets Friday as a special day to enroll local men for shipyard labor and mechanics. He will be at the Overland sales room to take applications or provide information. Over 75 men have enrolled, with a county goal of 117 workers, who will continue their current jobs until called.
A bulletin to T. E. Evans, federal food administrator for Putnam county, directs the county food administrator to handle reports of alleged violations and to receive reports from public eating houses. The change shifts duties from the state to county level to improve efficiency.
A service flag with 109 stars honoring three former faculty and 106 graduates will be dedicated at Green Castle High School Friday at 2 o clock. William Strain will present the flag. H E Rosenber, principal, will receive the banner. Miss Lillian Southard will read the honor roll of alumni in military service. The program includes four class exercises, high school orchestra numbers, and addresses by school board members. The public is invited with special seating for relatives. The honor roll lists many graduates and former students with years and names including Paul Airhart Roy Albaugh Eugene Anderson Leland Bass and many more. Former faculty members C W Jones W E Shrode Jas D Clearwaters are noted.
