Congresswoman Mary T Norton argues for a constitutional amendment to repeal the 18th amendment and submit it to a state referendum. She defends the plan as practical and just while opponents call direct vote illegal. Norton is joined by Charles Sabin Louise Gross and others backing repeal and highlighting prohibition's failures.
Police radio station WMDZ broadcast a report of Walter Vanasdale's suicide attempt after an anonymous call. Officers rushed to 226 North Addison Street, forced entry, found him unconscious from gas, and transported him to City Hospital where doctors predicted recovery. His wife and 15 year old daughter were away.
Frank Ashby age 50 of 741 Worth Avenue Indianapolis was captured by Marion County officers on the Hendricks county line and charged with bringing stolen goods into Marion county. Ashby was acquitted in Putnam circuit court about a year ago of a chicken stealing charge.
Dean McCutchan delivers a chapel talk on Lincoln era songs. He explains how people in Lincoln's time found amusement in singing and dancing and demonstrates period songs with Miss Bowles. The remarks amused and engaged listeners.
The Greencastle Boy Scout troop plans a Scout and Dad dinner at the Methodist Church at six tonight to honor National Boy Scout Week. Twenty seven scouts and as many dads are to attend. If a boy lacks a dad, a volunteer will be provided. The program includes music, remarks on Anniversary Week, patrol awards, words from dads, scout responses, recommitment of leaders, and a Scout work demonstration.
Captain Sir Hubert Wilkins explorer long missing for over two weeks is due to arrive at Deception Island aboard the William Scoresby tomorrow. The San Francisco Examiner notes the Wilkins party of three aides had not been heard since late January while seeking a polar base for an airplane flight over the Ross Ice Shelf. Severe storms are blamed for radio silence as Wilkins plans to depart for Montevideo after arrival.
Mrs. Henry O Tait returned home from Memphis where she visited relatives. Charles O Dell on Washington street started a class of boys for scientific temperance study. William Wade, ex bailiff, moved to Virginia to claim back pay and a monthly pension as a Confederate veteran. Greencastle rural carriers attended a banquet hosted by Cloverdale carriers last night.
Mr. Br. Don Bancroft of Chicago representing the World Brotherhood movement of the Methodist Church spoke to about 75 men at the New Methodist Church. He outlined the movement’s aim to unite men globally in fellowship and faithful church life alongside business. The event featured a Kiwanis Quartet and a Iplanned musical program led by T. B. Williams. Bancroft tours the Greencastle district with Dr. A. T. Briggs, already visiting Rockville Clinton Brazil and Terre Haute, with stops in Indianapolis and Danville scheduled next.
The Russellville high school junior class staged the play Making Daddy Behave in the gym on Thursday evening February 6. The cast included Burgest Lukins Pred Ramey Becky Luking Isabelle Anderson Martha Lukina Lenore Smithies Elizabeth Tilden Margaret Webster and others. A special number Love Me was sung by junior high girls and readings by Miss M. Fr. Reetor complemented the program.
A two truck collision on the water works bridge north of Greencastle started a fire that the city fire department extinguished before major damage. One truck belonged to the State Highway Department, the other to Trembly & Williams wholesale grocers. The Trembly truck was driven by Ralph Browning. The highway truck burned more, but both were damaged and towed away.
Mrs. Sarah McCown mother of C. C. McCown of Limedale is seriously ill at his home. A daughter from the West is expected soon. Another daughter Mrs Ellen Maloney cannot be located.
Howard Johnson 17 of Alexandria suffered a serious eye injury when a dinner fork flipped across the table at home. One prong struck his eyelid while another cut the eyeball prompting urgent medical treatment.
A large crowd watches Cloverdale teachers win 20 to 18 in a three game benefit series with Belle Union. The event includes a preliminary match between Cloverdale and Quincy ladies and a high school girls performance. Proceeds aid both schools with Cloverdale using funds for stage equipment.
Eight delegates from Lone Star Cement Co Indiana attended the Regional Safety meeting in Cincinnati at the Hotel Gibson on Tuesday February 11. Seven cement plants were represented by 66 delegates from firms in Ohio West Virginia Kentucky and Indiana. A J R Curtis Portland Cement Association reported a 68 percent drop in accidents since 1925. Mayor Russell Wilson welcomed attendees and Fred Toehler spoke at the afternoon session. Dinner followed at 6 30 pm with ongoing discussions to boost safety in the cement industry. Delegates from Lone Star included John O Callaghan Albert Shuey Raymond Baldwin Edwin Rogers Otto Carty William Huber Russell Fuller and Hugh Walker.
The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and noticeably cooler temperatures tonight and Friday with a chance of snow in the extreme south portion.
Charles Tingley Southard a 71 year old Greene Castle businessman died after a brief illness in Murnam County Hospital. He had sold the Southard Book Store in Greencastle where he was a longtime partner and owner. Funeral services will be held at his home and burial in Forest Hill cemetery. He was a native of Indianapolis and a DePauw University graduate. Survivors include sister Miss Lillian Southard and several relatives in Indiana.
The Green Castle high school PTA plans two performances by Georgette's Famous Players of Musical Novelties and Swiss Bell Ringers on Tuesday February 25. An afternoon show explains the instruments to children, followed by an evening concert in the high school auditorium featuring 18 plus instruments, many new to audiences. The PTA promotes it as a premier season attraction seen nationally.
