FP M Lyon city attorney told council that law permitting the city to oil streets is impracticable. He outlined two possible plans and suggested the decision may rest with individual property owners.
Regular council meeting addresses oiling streets as a city expense or by ordinance. City attorney says both options impractical for Greencastle. Citizens favored past self‑help oiling. likely owners to pay if done this summer. Meeting brief with lamp changes approved and watering trough repair planned.
The ordinance concerns granting a license for under a year and lists a claim ordinance with salaried amounts for Fire Dept personnel Virgil Grimes Charles Vanvader Charles Cooper Hiram Huffman and others, plus miscellaneous items and police department salaries and extras. It outlines salaries and expenditures by department and official, implying a budgetary decision on limited-duration licensing.
Over four weeks Putnam County received several state accountants to audit county sheriff and clerk books, then township trustees, then the county auditor and treasurer. S. M. Quillen and O. A. Hutchens joined the team this morning, with two weeks expected in the commissioners’ room.
Putnam County physicians met Tuesday evening in the office of Dr W M McGaughey and enjoyed a splendid program of practical demonstrations and papers.
The Putnam County Medical Society held a well attended meeting in Greencastle at Dr. W. M. McGaughey’s office. Officers aimed to boost practicality with demonstrations and tests replacing some papers. Attendees included physicians from Greencastle Filmore and Cloverland and guests from Terre Haute.
State penal farm commission will meet early next week and notify Elam Denny, chairman of the local committee, of the schedule.
Elam Denny reports Capt. Hart of the State Penal Farm Commission says a meeting in Indianapolis next week will decide Greencastle as a site. The commission will inspect one or two locations this week, including Putnamville, and likely issue a final decision then. The local committee has prepared assurances to meet commission requests if Greencastle is chosen, and the outlook is favorable.
Reb 11 Republicans of the Fifth District convened at the courthouse yester day afternoon and re elected John Bryson of Bray district as chairman by unanimous vote. Charles T. Peck of Putnam County chaired the meeting with William Shepherd of Terre Haute as secretary. The resolutions body urged reducing Southern representation in national conventions and House of Representatives. A colored minister praised the national committee. The high school bought a $170 Universal Balepticon for illustrated class recitations, arriving Tuesday and to be installed soon. Charley McGaughey visited from Roachdale on legal business.
The final regular session of the Republican pension board occurred today in Dr. W. M. Mc Gaughey’s office with members Dr. Logan Stanley Roachdale Dr. W. W. Tucker and Dr. McGaughey present Two applicants sought pension increases After adjournment the old board will hand over records to the new board comprising Dr. G W Bence Dr Jer ome King and Dr Eugene Hawkins
In Brazil Indiana on February 10 relatives of B A Schofield learned from Congressman Moss that the State Department has an official report Schofield perished in the tunnel of the Mexico and Northwestern Railway Company van. No bodies have yet been recovered. The telegram ended hopes that he might be alive or held by bandits.
A. M. MacCullum of Philadelphia met Greencastle Water Works directors Tuesday to review routine business. Officials expect a State Utilities Commission hearing on a water rate increase for Greencastle in about six weeks.
City councilors informally discussed building an adequate plant for Greencastle at a Tuesday night meeting. They believe a suitable facility could be constructed for about 50000 dollars and favor an early decision.
Several Greencastle council members say a comprehensive sewer system could be built for about 50 000 to 59 009 dollars. The proposal would serve areas to Elm Arlington Franklin and city limits with ten year payments for property owners. The council plans to hire a city engineer to draw tentative plans and aims to begin work early next spring if approved.
