Anard Schofield brother of Curtis J. Schofield former Putnam County prosecutor and his wife, a DePauw graduate, was killed in a tunnel incident in the Cumbre region of Mexico. The attack involved bandits targeting Razil Man, reported as the victim.
Ber ard Scofield once supervised the Vincennes division of the Vandalia railroad in Brazil Indiana. His brother attorney C J Scofield left for Mexico and Mrs Bernard Scofield widowed Lena Byrd of this city is named. A telegram from J J Pruitt reported possible survival and ongoing search for railroad officers.
Northwestern University selects Fred J Murphy former Yale halfback and Eli advisory coach to lead the football eleven next fall. He succeeds Dennis Grady a DePauw alumnus who faced criticism for team performance last season. Murphy will begin duties next month instructing candidates in basic game fundamentals. Grady is remembered as a DePauw athletic star from Lafayette.
They were married at Indianapolis, lived there for several years and have two sons. Bernard Scofield was well known in Greencastle. He was a brother of Curtis J. Scofield, former prosecuting attorney for Clay and Putnam Counties, and a brother of Mrs John M. Rawley. Mrs Scofield formerly was Miss Lena Byrd, a DePauw graduate and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Miss Byrd was well and popularity known in Greencastle.
The Republican district convention held in Terre Haute elected John G. Bryson district chairman without opposition. Arthur Reat, Thada, and several other local Republicans attended the meeting.
Secretary of the Terre Haute Non Partisan Voters League appoints a special prosecutor to conduct investigations with charges filed against the Vigo County prosecutor nicknamed Little Dick Werneke. A hearing is scheduled within twenty days.
In Terre Haute Indiana Judge Charles M Fortune names Chalmers Hamill to head a new grand jury to probe alleged election crookedness in Vigo County The move follows impeachment action against Prosecutor Little Dick Werneke and comes as the attorney general may intervene to supersede local prosecutors Several charges allege Werneke refused to sign warrants for arrest of 500 men who registered illegally with affidavits on file He is a familiar figure in Greencastle where he visits relatives.
John Kelly, foreman at the O. and I. stone quarry, was severely attacked at the quarry late Friday night. He is reported to be improving at Indianapolis hospital where he arrived Saturday afternoon and is expected to recover. Police have not arrested the Italian suspect, but hope to detain him soon.
George Ernest Coleman a Greencastle high school junior has enlisted in the U S Army. After taking the first exam in Indianapolis he heads to Columbus Ohio for a second examination. If he passes he will be retained in the service. Greencastle Camp M W of A hosts an indoor picnic February 12 at 7 PM at the I O O F hall on East Washington Street. State Deputy John D Voltz and District Deputy W A McGath of Indianapolis will attend with their wives. Mrs W O Timmons returns from Edinburgh after a visit with relatives.
Mrs. Donald Foster of Indianapolis honored William Pittman, a local colored boy, for aiding her during the Old Gold day bleacher collapse on McKeen field. Pittman helped remove debris and freed her, then assisted her to a car for medical help. Foster later learned his name and gave him a fine pair of shoes as thanks.
J C Myers 82 of Indianapolis a Big Four freight brakeman was badly injured near the Big Four station when a door from a westbound car fell from its hinges and struck him in the cab as two trains moved. He grabbed an iron rod to stop his fall and survived. injuries included bruises and cuts to arm and leg. Doctor W M McGaughey treated him at the scene.
Indiana's fire marshal says thorough inspections and powers to demand repairs deter fire hazards. He notes the law, modeled on North American standards, will grow in importance as citizens recognize its practical value. Deputy Harris failed to locate Charley Bullo after追追追
Judge Hughes addresses Roach Dale man who seeks to send his children to an orphans home He must find work and support them as required by the court in this guardianship case.
A Roachdale man William Summers asked the judge to take and place his four children in an orphanage. After questioning locals the judge ordered the children sent to the home for a few weeks while Summers must secure work and prove ability to care for them or face child desertion charges.
The Elks announce their annual minstrel at the Cook Opera House in Greencastle on February 23 and 24. Managers Neely O hair Ernest Stoner and Reese Matson confirm Miller Draper of New York City will stage the production with local amateurs and special scenery.
With the new semester DePauw sororities pledge several girls under the sophomore pledge rule. Alpha Omicron Pi lists Helen Sutton Poplar Bluff Mo Margaret Jayne Indianapolis and Ada Smith Mitchell Ind as pledges.
A detective backed by the crew of Vandalia East Bound Passenger Train No. 14 fought a battle with hobos aboard the train which arrived about 8 o'clock this morning.
Three tramps riding the blind baggage on Vandalia No 14 fought with detective Levi Lauderback and train crew near Greencastle. Officers arrested Bartlett Barner and John Bartlett after a brief mayoral hearing, with Barner and Bartlett fined five dollars plus costs. Tilly Cox was released. Homes claimed Evansville and Indianapolis respectively.
