DePauw basketball travels to Richmond for a return game with Earlham after a 44 21 win. Coach Moffett expects a tough battle on the Quakers home floor. Earlham’s early ejection weakened the defense but Farnham and the same starting lineup, including Ragsdale Mountz Crawley and Stunkel, are set to play.
Michigantown Ind Feb 7 INS The state will house fire its automobile license plates at the state prison here an army of convicts engaged producing 1931 plates with yellow backed numerals. Production will reach 6 000 daily and may double. Officials seek use of trusties for gar bage collection saving thousands and boosting prison labor. Warden Daly notes 19 states now manufacture plates in prison.
Indianapolis Feb 6 Officials from the highway commission and conservation department will discuss a new entrance to Turkey Run State Park from U S Highway 41 with Governor Harry G. Leslie. Forester Ralph Wilcox will outline a station plan.
A 1929 study by DePauw University economics students tracked five uptown Greencastle corners across day parts to estimate passer traffic. Washington and Indiana led for pedestians while total five corners yielded about 26 961 passers including drivers. rough daily total around 80 000. The count notes duplications and cautions the figure reflects exposure for merchants rather than unique people.
Secretary Stimson reveals U S naval program aiming for parity with Britain and sets a pace for talks. He proposes canceling five 10 000 ton cruisers while completing twelve and adding five more, keeping Britain at fifteen. The plan also calls for building about 77 000 tons of light cruisers likely eleven 7 000 ton ships amid cautious approval from British press.
At an open hearing in Washington the Veterans Bureau discussed a proposed 500000 dollar Veterans Hospital in Indiana with 150 beds. Greencastle reps Wilbur S. Donner and Charles McGaughey attended the session as witnesses. A baby girl was born Thursday at St Vincent's in Indianapolis to Mrs Adelaide Martin, formerly Miss Adelaide Thomas.
Fire started by an overheated furnace pipe on the second floor caused minor damage at the Commons Club fraternity house located at Walnut Street and College Avenue. City firemen responded quickly and extinguished the blaze around 10 o'clock this morning.
Dr Oscar Thomas Olson presented the final lecture in his five part Simpson foundation series at the University chapel. He argued religion binds yet frees and that truth must become part of the person for a liberated life. He warned against worldly security becoming a prison and praised Jesus for promoting a wider life. Continuation on page 2.
Miss Joy Day daughter of Rome Day and John R Hammond wed Sunday at the bride's parents home. The Tailors beat the Shoemakers last night in bowling with team members listed. Mrs Ralph Confer visited Mrs A J Burks at Coatesville. Mrs Anna Hamm of Brazil visits the Hamm family on South Indiana Street Road.
Brazil youth William O King sues Greencastle grocer Willis Miller for 5000 damages after a July automobile collision near Mount Meridian. Evidence heard, pleas to follow as Putnam circuit court jury convenes at 1 15 today. King, by his father Edward Bh King, seeks compensation for alleged permanent injuries with medical testimony presented.
M EE Butterfield aged about sixty a former operator of the Greencastle canning factory died at his Eaton Indiana home Sunday after suffering a paralysis stroke Thursday. He leaves wife and four children Maurice Butterfield Muncie Carl Greencastle Frank Lexington Ky and Mrs Harold Talbott Greencastle. Funeral plans to be announced.
A large crowd attended Greencastle high school seniors carnival last night enjoying side shows and a musical comedy by a Black Face quartet. The event featured the Death Ray fortune telling and a fashion show as the main show preceded the dance. Funeral services for Harold J. Pitts of Mt. Olive age 27 will be at 2 pm Saturday at his father Horace Pitts home on the Manhattan road with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery.
County Agent office offers farm record books for income and expenses. Farmers are urged to start records this year using January transactions to cover the full year. Last year many Putnam county and state farmers kept records, with over forty in Putnam county beginning this year.
Indianapolis February 7 The Butler University basketball team faced ineligibility graduation and illness woes as captain Oval Hildebrand was barred from all university sports for professionalism. Others declared ineligible include Dick Wolfe William Haslet and Walter Cozad. The squad led by Hildebrand had 186 points in 14 games and was preparing to face Wabash College in Crawfordsville.
Harold Shannon of Roachdale candidate for the Democratic nomination for Putnam County Auditor. He is a progressive young farmer and trader from north Putnam County and a Roachdale High School graduate.
The outlook calls for mostly cloudy conditions tonight and Saturday, with fair skies in the southern portion. It will be somewhat colder tonight in the extreme south and extreme northeast regions.
South Greencastle man William Patterson, 22, pleaded guilty to robbery before Judge James P. Hughes in Putnam Circuit Court. An affidavit by DePauw student Clyde Hinshaw charged the crime after a Monday night holdup on College Avenue. Sentence to be pronounced tomorrow. Patterson’s wife Lucy Patterson waited outside in tears.
A county wide Christian church meeting at First Christian Church Greencastle drew attendees from Greencastle Russellville Fillmore Ronehdale Bainbridge and Clover dale. Fred Belles of Russellville presided and Bert Wilson Indianapolis spoke on a proposed Pension Fund plan with about 2900 preachers enrolled and 2600 needed before operation. An eight million dollar fund would back pensions for long serving ministers.
Miss Charlotte Etter of Greencastle High School earned a four year scholarship from Purdue University for outstanding work in 4-H Heiben. She won prizes at county and state fairs and at the Purdue roundup for haling work. Mrs Oscar Vaughn and her son returned home near Coatesville from Putnam County Hospital Thursday.
